Governing Board grants tenure to nine full-time faculty members
The Hartnell Governing Board granted tenure to nine faculty members based on their teaching
skills and professional growth. The newly tenured faculty, approved March 1 and effective
academic year 2022-23, are: Tammy Boates, early childhood education; Emily Gutierrez,
computer science; Jacob Marciel, psychology; Maria Marquez, Spanish; Michael McCarthy,
chemistry; Kelly McClary, English; Dr. Jennifer Moorhouse, mathematics; Dr. Emily Rustad,
agriculture; Dr. Andrew Soto, philosophy. The board also approved continuation of appointment
for 11 other full-time probationary instructors on the tenure-track.

Tenure review is a four-year process involving student appraisals and observations for at least
five courses for each instructor each year and numerous consultations, said Dr. Cathryn
Wilkinson, vice president of academic affairs. She thanked peer faculty, information technology
staff, administrative assistants, deans, directors and vice presidents for their “effort and
expertise: in contributing to the tenure process.

“This year, the tenure milestone is even more significant, knowing that the past two years of
advancement to tenure occurred during the disruptions and unforeseen challenges of the
COVID-19 pandemic,” Dr. Wilkinson said.

Student Trustee Jane Hernandez
named to PTK All-California team
Jane Hernandez, president of the Associated Students of Hartnell College and student trustee
on the Hartnell Governing Board, has been selected for the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor
Society’s 2022 All-California Academic Team, following her nomination by former interim
superintendent/president Dr. Raúl Rodriguez. The award recognizes achievements
both inside and outside the classroom, and honorees go on to compete for the
PTK’s All-USA Academic Team, which comes with a $5,000 scholarship.

“Students have undoubtedly faced many additional and unprecedented
challenges over the last two years,” said Laura Murrell, director of
communications for the Community College League of California, which
sponsors the awards. “The 2022 winners should be exceptionally proud of
their achievements during these difficult times.”

Hernandez will graduate this spring with associate degrees in psychology,
Spanish and liberal arts. During her past two years as ASHC president and the
past year as student trustee, she has led creation of the Panther Press student
newsletter, contributed to the decision to adopt the TimelyCare app for 24/7 student
mental health services and launched Project Pink Bag, to make free feminine hygiene products
available to Hartnell students.

Dr. Chelsy Pham is new vice president

Since 2018, she was chief information systems officer and
director of information technology services at San Joaquin
Delta College in Stockton, where she led implementation of a
number of student services and college efficiency measures,
including a live chat to aid communication during the
pandemic. From 2016-18, she was director of finance, business
and technology development for Eye Designs & Vision
Optometry in Sacramento, and from 2000-2016, she was
director of strategic planning, product and technology
development for VSP Global.

Dr. Pham holds a Doctor of Management in Organizational
Management/Information Systems Technology and a Master of
Business Administration in Global Management, both from the
University of Phoenix.

“I am honored to be part of the Hartnell family and look forward to supporting our students,
faculty, staff, and community,” she said. “As Nelson Mandela once said, ‘Education is the most
powerful weapon that we can use to change the world.’”

Music Extravaganza on April 1
will showcase student performers
Hartnell’s music and vocal ensembles will present their
annual Music Extravaganza from 6-9 p.m. on April 1 in
the Mainstage Theater, located in the Center for
Performing Arts (Building K).

Guests will hear performances by the Hartnell Choir
and Hartnell College Chamber Singers, the Hartnell
Community Orchestra, the Jazz Band, a guitar
ensemble and piano students. The groups are under
the direction of Sandra Rudo, Steve Ettinger, Phil
Collins and Galina Vinokurov. Additional concerts are
scheduled for April 29-May 19.

Tickets for the Music Extravaganza are $5 for students
and seniors and $10 general admission, including refreshments.

Student helps launch magazine
on local art and music science
Hartnell business student Karina Beltran has joined with her older brother Fernando (pictured)
to envision and create a print magazine called Lowpass, featuring local art and artists of
multiple media and named for a type of music filter that cuts out high-frequency sound.

The magazine began in 2018 as an Instagram account, and the first
edition, or “chapter,” was produced on in 2019. The project made a leap
on Feb. 22 with a launch party at the 4word Art Gallery in Oldtown
Salinas, complete with live music and an enthusiastic crowd of
                      supporters.

Beltran, a 2020 graduate of Monterey County Home Charter School who
plans to transfer to Cal State Monterey Bay in the fall, said Lowpass grew
out of her interest in the arts and her brother’s love of music. “My vision
is for the magazine to be slightly like Rolling Stones but have it come
from the soul of Salinas, featuring local and Bay Area artists,” she said.
“In the future, I see the magazine continuing to feature stories about
music, small businesses and artists that deserve their spotlight.”
To purchase a copy of Lowpass, visit @lowpassmagazine on Instagram,

HEP students enjoy field trip
to CSUMB and art museum
On March 12, High School Equivalency Program (HEP)
students visited Cal State Monterey Bay (pictured) and the
Monterey Museum of Art for their first field trip since the
pandemic began two years ago.
At CSUMB, they were hosted by staff of the College
Assistance Migrant Program, who gave them a tour of
campus and shared information about the daily life of
university students in and out of the classroom. At the
museum, they saw the exhibition “Courage Within:
Women Without Shelter,” which explores the experiences
of women facing homelessness.
HEP and CAMP are sister programs funded by a generous
grant by the Office of Migrant Education. HEP assists
migrant/seasonal farmworkers in completing their High
School Equivalency (formerly known as GED) and continuing
with their academic, career and employment goals.

Technology programs showcase
opportunities for high school students
The Alisal Business & Technology Center on Hartnell’s Alisal Campus hosted groups of visiting

Guthrie thanked Hartnell for bringing Advanced Automotive
Technology to Mission Trails ROP. Future “AAT Days” will include
high schools from north Monterey County, Gonzales, Soledad,
                              Greenfield and King City.

Swim & Dive team hosts first meet
since program was halted in 2003
On March 18, 17 men’s and women’s swimmers
participated in Hartnell’s first official home swim meet
since 2003, when the swim and dive program was
canceled. The pandemic interrupted the 2019 season
and scrubbed last year’s entirely.

Kanyada Doughty continued her successful season by
winning the 400-yard individual medley (pictured) and
the 200-yard butterfly. Her times of 5:13.19 and
                               2:20.99, respectively,
                                 were both new Hartnell

third in 100 freestyle. The men also placed second in the 400
medley relay, with a time of 4:43.36.

“There were some swimmers in this meet who've been there from the beginning and some who
got to make history in their first year with Hartnell,” said Head Coach Joel McKown (pictured,

hard, supported each other and provided a great atmosphere for visiting teams.”
