©2020LabelBlind®FOREWORD
Studies have indicated that consumers struggle to comprehend nutrition labels on
food packs. Technical information on food labels stating complex ingredients,
nutrition facts, daily recommended values, serving sizes, allergens and more leave
consumers overwhelmed, leading them to make uninformed and unsafe choices
that often serve contrary to their desire for choosing food that promotes good
health and well-being.
The LabelBlind® Nutrition Report of Packaged Food in India (2020) - Top Immunity
Boosting Food and Beverages is developed by LabelBlind® to guide Indian
consumers on the selection of pre-packaged food & beverage products, based on an
empirical, data-backed assessment of food & beverage products currently available
in the Indian market.
This is a first-of-its-kind report that assesses food & beverage products based on 19
immunity enhancing and immunity-suppressing nutrients, as declared on the food
labels of respective products, to guide consumers in the choice of food products
that have the potential to improve immunity. The report provides a comprehensive,
independent, objective and unbiased information to consumers about the immunity
supporting properties of food & beverage products currently sold in India.
LabelBlind® works towards strengthening the ecosystem of consumers-businesses
and regulatory guidelines to positively impact food habits in India.

Immunity is a defense system consisting of a vast network of cells and tissues in our
body which provides protection against disease causing microbes. This is critical for
our survival. In the case of the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic, we are beginning to
read reports that state the correlation of NCDs – non communicable diseases to the
fatalities of Covid-19. Individuals in certain pre-existing illnesses like diabetes,
hypertension, cardio vascular disease, and respiratory issues are at a higher risk of
having Covid-19 complications.
We have well established data stating that our complex immune system requires
several micronutrients that have vital, often interdependent roles at every phase of
the immune response. It has been noted that even borderline deficiencies in certain
nutrients tend to impair the immune system.
Moreover, deficiency of a single nutrient can alter the body’s immune response as
well. Based on a variety of clinical data, Proteins, Vitamins A, B6, B12, C, D, E, Folate,
Zinc, Iron, Copper, Selenium, Magnesium, Omega-3 and Probiotics, are particularly
important in boosting the immune response 4, 5, 6.
These nutrients help the immune system in several ways:
✓ work as antioxidants to protect healthy cells,
✓ sustain growth and activity of immune cells,
✓ produce antibodies.

OBJECTIVES OF THIS REPORT –
LabelBlind® Nutrition Report of Packaged Food in India (2020) - Top Immunity
Boosting Food and Beverages is a study of immunity enhancing and immunity
suppressing nutrition factors present in pre-packaged food & beverage products
available in the retail market.
The report provides an independent and objective assessment, based on nutrients
declared on food labels of respective products, to guide consumers on immunity
supporting properties of food & beverage products. (The study is based on
assessment done on the basis of FSSAI Advertising and Labelling Guidelines1,2 and
RDAs as suggested by ICMR3.)
METHODOLOGY -
This report is a cross—sectional study of pre-packaged foods sold in the retail
market. LabelBlind® has sampled information of 8000 food & beverage products. All
food & beverage products falling under the scope of FSSAI Labelling regulations
were eligible to be a part of the report.
01. Data Collection
Data based on following information;
i. 8000 packaged food and beverage products, classified by 43 nutrients
ii. Nutrition values declared by food companies on food labels of products
(the study does not include laboratory analysis of food products)
iii. Nutrients classified into mandatory and non-mandatory nutrients for
food and beverage products as per FSSAI guidelines
iv. Nutrition values collected from retail sources in the period July 2019 and
April 2020
02. Selection of Nutrients
19 critical ‘Immunity Enhancing’ and ‘Immunity Suppressing’ Nutrition factors4 were
assessed for each packaged food & beverage product.
©2020LabelBlind® 03The following nutrients were identified to have a direct impact on immunity4,5,6.
All product data was collected to include information on the following nutrients –
i. Immunity Enhancing Nutrition Factors : Protein, Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin
E, Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Folate, Iron, Zinc, Selenium, Copper,
Magnesium, Omega-3 and Probiotics
ii. Immunity Suppressing Nutrition Factors : Added Sugar, Saturated Fat, Trans Fat
and Sodium.
03. Selection of Samples
A sample is defined as one unique product or item based on brand name, product
name and variant. Products sold in multiple SKUs (stock keeping units) are not
considered as unique products. Example – 1 breakfast cereal with honey flavour and
strawberry flavour will be treated as 2 unique products respectively. However, 200 g
and 500 g packs of the same flavour will be treated as one single, unique sample.
From the LabelBlind® database of 8000 samples, 1405 food & beverage products
across 296 brands, that have declared at least 2 immunity enhancing nutrition
factors on their label were selected. Food & Beverage products across 14 categories
were eligible for the listing –
i. Wheat & Multigrain Atta (Flour)
ii. Rice
iii. Edible Oil
iv. Ghee & Butter
v. Health Food Drinks
vi. Ready to Eat Breakfast Cereals
vii. Dairy & Dairy Products – Milk & Dahi
viii. Dairy & Dairy Products – Lassi, Buttermilk, Kefir, Yogurt, Flavoured Milk.
ix. Dried Fruits, Nuts & Seeds
x. Ready to Cook & Eat Products
xi. Energy Bars
xii. Spreads & Dips
xiii. Fruit & Vegetable Juices & Nectars
xiv. Non-dairy ‘Milks’ (Nut milk and Soy milk)
©2020LabelBlind® 04Processed, pre-packaged foods sold in retail as products of direct consumption by
consumers were considered. Foods sold as a part of B2B services to other food &
beverage companies, and used as one of the ingredients in the final product have
not been considered in the study sample.
04. LabelBlind® Immunity Rating Methodology
i. The Immunity Rating assesses products on 2 criteria;
• Number of Immunity Enhancing and Immunity Suppressing nutrition factors
and,
• Quantity of each nutrient measured against Recommended Daily Allowances
(RDA) of adult Indian man (Indian Council of Medical Research) 7 and Food
Safety and Standards Regulations, 2018 8, 9.
Table 01. Recommended Daily Allowances (RDA) Table 02. Daily Values (DV) for adult man

that food category, basis the nature of the food or beverage.
Example – Fruit & Vegetable Juices were evaluated for their Vitamin A, Vitamin
C, Iron, Added Sugar and Sodium content.
On the other hand, dairy-based products were assessed for their Protein,
Vitamin D, Vitamin A , Zinc, Magnesium and Probiotic content.
iii. Scores are not comparable between categories, considering the differences in
their chemical and nutritional compositions.
iv. Scores are based on nutrients declared on the food label
v. All products were evaluated per 100 g or 100 ml on ‘as sold’ basis.
For products that need to be reconstituted before consumption, e.g. soup,
gravies, custards, the nutrients are declared basis 100 g of the product as
reconstituted according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
vi. The Immunity Rating scores products on a scale of 1 to 5. Higher the score,
greater the immunity boosting properties of the food or beverage product .
Scores are nuanced up to one decimal place for the report.
vii. Average Immunity Ratings for brands were calculated using mean scores of all
selected products under the brand.
05. Selection of Top Immunity Boosting Foods & Beverages List
i. Product Immunity scores reflect the immunity score of the individual products
(N=1405).
ii. Products with the highest Immunity Rating were selected for the LabelBlind®
Nutrition Report of Packaged Food in India (2020) - Top Immunity Boosting
Food and Beverages
iii. To ensure a wider representation of brands in the report, each brand
representation was capped at maximum 3 highest-scoring products in the
respective category
iv. Food & Beverage products with LabelBlind® Immunity Rating greater than 2.0
were included in the Top Immunity Boosting Foods & Beverages list.

LabelBlind® is India’s First Food Rating System that helps consumers make smart
food choices.
LabelBlind® is a digital platform launched by The Nutrition Alchemy, a company that
offers solutions in the space of Nutrition Technology. LabelBlind® simplifies complex
information declared on food labels for consumers to comprehend the nutrition
value of food products and apply the understanding to their daily choice of food.
The website reviews and rates food products based on a proprietary nutrition
assessment model, that evaluates food products on 14 vital parameters. The
assessment model is guided by nutrition principles laid down by FSSAI, USFDA and
WHO. LabelBlind® has close to 8000 products listed on its website, across 120
categories, including packaged food products, edible oil, staples and nutrition
supplements. Ratings for food products are based on their Nutrient Value.
LabelBlind® is working with FSSAI in the space of Food Labelling. We collaborate
with leading nutritionists to bring accurate, scientific and cutting-edge solutions to
consumers.
LabelBlind® classifies products into distinct categories, for example, snacks,
breakfast cereal, yogurt, bread, fruits, etc. In each category, LabelBlind reviews the
most relevant nutrients and ingredients and gives them more weight compared to
others. For example - fiber is a very important nutrient in breads and cereals, but
really not to be expected in yogurt or beverages.
The digital platform is free for use by consumers and collaborates with businesses
(in the space of CPGs, food retail, health and life insurance, retail banking and
wellness), to offer unique NutriTech solutions to brands and their customers.
