Liturgy at Home
St. James’ Anglican Church

        Feast of St. Luke
   9:00 am, October 18, 2020
Welcome
We acknowledge our presence on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of
the Coast Salish Peoples.

Welcome to this St. James’ “Liturgy for use at home,” which will continue for the
time being in parallel with the Sung Mass at 10:30 am in church.

For the time being that will be the only public service in St. James’. Nonetheless, the
Church’s life of prayer and intercession continues. Those who live close to St. James’
may hear the Angelus ring from the tower: this is an audible sign that the Church is
praying for the parish, the DTES, the medical services, and for a swift resolution to
this pandemic.

The Daily Office will be said online via Zoom at the regular times: contact details on
the website, and at the end of this bulletin. The Mass will continue to be offered
regularly, even though the doors may be locked.

You are invited either to share in this Liturgy at 9:00 am on Sunday, via Zoom, or to
use this as an aid to your prayers at home, drawing strength, we hope, from the
knowledge that fellow-parishioners will be praying alongside you.

The Parish Intercession Lists, which are being kept up to date, are being prayed
daily. Please make any requests to the Parish Office, office@stjames.bc.ca, 604-685-
2532.
PRAYER FOR A PANDEMIC

May we who are merely inconvenienced
remember those whose lives are at stake.
May we who have no risk factors
remember those most vulnerable.
May we who have the luxury of working from home
remember those who must choose between
preserving their health or making their rent.
May we who have the flexibility to care for our
children when their schools close
remember those who have no options.
May we who have to cancel our trips
remember those that have no safe place to go.
May we who are losing our margin money
in the tumult of the economic market
remember those who have no margin at all.
As fear grips our country, let us choose love.
During this time when we cannot physically
wrap our arms around each other,
let us yet find ways to be the loving
embrace of God to our neighbors. Amen.

VISION STATEMENT

Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a
Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition.

MISSION OBJECTIVES

   • To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we
       invite and welcome friends, family, and strangers into our midst;
   •   To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ;
   • To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest, and spiritual ways
       among parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need;
   • To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of
       God within and beyond the Parish;
   • To strive to maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves, and
optimize the use of our assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space
and ministry from generation to generation, to the everlasting glory of God.

A Reflection
A Sonnet for St. Luke’s Day

His gospel is itself a living creature
A ground and glory round the throne of God,
Where earth and heaven breathe through human nature
And One upon the throne sees it is good.
Luke is the living pillar of our healing,
A lowly ox, the servant of the four,*
We turn his page to find his face revealing
The wonder, and the welcome of the poor.
He breathes good news to all who bear a burden
Good news to all who turn and try again,
The meek rejoice and prodigals find pardon,
A lost thief reaches paradise through pain,
The voiceless find their voice in every word
And, with Our Lady, magnify Our Lord.

Malcolm Guite, Sounding the Seasons

* The ox is an iconographic symbol of Luke the Evangelist;
“the four” refers to the four Evangelists.

Zoom Worship
For all of us, sharing in Liturgy at Home via Zoom is a new and evolving experience.
We are all on a learning curve! The technology enables us, I think, to create a sense
of community as together we offer our worship to God. It also has challenges and
limitations.

One such challenge is that everyone’s internet runs at a different speed: this means
that if we try to say or sing something together with all the microphones switched
on, the result is not edifying unison but a cacophony. For this reason we ask
everyone to keep microphones on mute, unless one is reading. Please feel free to
make the responses aloud at home, but not “on the air.” Designated person(s) will
make the responses on everyone’s behalf.

We are exploring how we may include more music, but we have not yet discovered
an effective way. We are grateful to Gerald for his commentary and links to music
being circulated with The Thurible and on the website.

We offer this Liturgy at Home in union with the clergy offering the Sunday Mass in
St. James’, on behalf of the parish, the DTES, and for deliverance from this pandemic.

Fr. Kevin is grateful to all who are making this Liturgy at Home possible, and for the
encouraging response and helpful feedback.

COLLECT OF THE DAY

Let us pray.
Almighty God,
who inspired Luke the physician
to proclaim the love and healing power of your Son,
give your Church, by the grace of the Spirit
and the medicine of the gospel,
the same love and power to heal;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.

Liturgy of the Word
FIRST READING

A reading from the Book of Sirach.

Honour physicians for their services, for the Lord created them; for their gift of
healing comes from the Most High, and they are rewarded by the king. The skill of
physicians makes them distinguished, and in the presence of the great they are
admired. The Lord created medicines out of the earth, and the sensible will not
despise them. And he gave skill to human beings that he might be glorified in his
marvellous works. By them the physician heals and takes away pain; the pharmacist
makes a mixture from them. God’s works will never be finished; and from him
health spreads over all the earth. My child, when you are ill, do not delay, but pray to
the Lord, and he will heal you. Give up your faults and direct your hands rightly and
cleanse your heart from all sin. Then give the physician his place, for the Lord
created him; do not let him leave you, for you need him. There may come a time
when recovery lies in the hands of physicians, for they too pray to the Lord that he
will grant them success in diagnosis and in healing, for the sake of preserving life.
                                                              Sirach 38:1-4, 6-10, 12-14
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

PSALM

Antiphon: How pleasant it is to honour God with praise, hallelujah.

Hallelujah!
How good it is to sing praises to our God! how pleasant it is to honour him with
praise!
The Lord rebuilds Jerusalem; he gathers the exiles of Israel.
He heals the broken-hearted and binds up their wounds.
He counts the number of the stars and calls them all by their names.
Great is our Lord and mighty in power; there is no limit to his wisdom.
The Lord lifts up the lowly, but casts the wicked to the ground.
Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving; make music to our God upon the harp.

Antiphon: How pleasant it is to honour God with praise, hallelujah.
                                                                       Psalm 147:1-7

SECOND READING

A reading from the Second Letter of Paul to Timothy.

As for you, always be sober, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, carry out
your ministry fully. As for me, I am already being poured out as a libation, and the
time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race,
I have kept the faith. From now on there is reserved for me the crown of
righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give to me on that day, and
not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing. Do your best to
come to me soon, for Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and
gone to Thessalonica; Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia. Only Luke is
with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful in my ministry. I have
sent Tychicus to Ephesus. When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at
Troas, also the books, and above all the parchments.
                                                                      2 Timothy 4:5-13
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

                                                                Liturgy at Home | 11
ALLELUIA

Alleluia.
I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will tell of all your wonderful
deeds.
Alleluia.
And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not
forsaken those who seek you.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL READING

The Lord be with you.
And with thy spirit.

The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.
Glory be to thee, O Lord.

Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about
him spread through all the surrounding country. He began to teach in their
synagogues and was praised by everyone. When he came to Nazareth, where he had
been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom.
He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He
unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: “The Spirit of the Lord
is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent
me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the
oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.” And he rolled up the
scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue
were fixed on him. Then he began to say to them, “Today this scripture has been
fulfilled in your hearing.”
                                                                            Luke 4:14-21
The Gospel of Christ.
Praise be to thee, O Christ.

Spiritual Communion
THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.

SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

As we are unable to receive the Blessed Sacrament at this time,
meditate quietly for a moment on these words of Jesus from St. John 6:

“I am the Bread of Life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, whoever
believes in me will never thirst.”

“O come to my heart, Lord Jesus. There is room in my heart for thee.”

                                                                 Liturgy at Home | 17
HYMN VERSE

Clergy Notes
We are delighted that Archbishop Melissa is able to be with us this Sunday, on Zoom
and in church, as we celebrate the Feast of St. Luke, Evangelist and Beloved
Physician.

Many are attracted to Luke’s Gospel by his skill in story-telling: he excels at painting
word pictures. He highlights the humanity and compassion of Jesus, his concern for
the poor and outcast. Women play a significant part in the narrative. In the tradition,
Luke is also known as an artist, an icon-writer: there are several instances of icons
of the Blessed Virgin Mary attributed to Luke; I have visited one on Malta.

In some of the Epistles we hear of Luke as a companion of St. Paul and at one point
in Acts Luke, the author, includes himself in one of Paul’s journeys, “We put out to
sea . . .”; indeed, it is Paul who refers to him as the Beloved Physician (Colossians
4.14). This is why Luke is the Patron Saint of the healing professions, alongside
Raphael, the healing Archangel.

So on this St. Luke’s Day we give thanks and pray for all who work in the medical
and healing professions, especially in this time of pandemic, and for all engaged in
medical research, particularly those seeking a vaccine against Covid-19. We pray too
for the Church’s ministry of healing and reconciliation.

St. Luke, Beloved Physician, pray for us!

Every blessing,
Fr Kevin
