PREVIEW
This summer, 100 selected Public Safety Cadets will have the unique opportunity to participate in the
first Public Safety Cadets National Leadership Academy. Participants will be housed at George Mason
University’s Fairfax, Virginia campus.
ELIGIBILITY
The applicant must be a currently registered participant with Public Safety Cadets. Cadets must
complete the attached application, secure the necessary approvals, and submit the application along
with a statement of “What a Career in Law Enforcement Means to Me” in no fewer than 500 words.
SELECTION PROCESS
Each registered Public Safety Cadets Unit may send one Cadet of their choosing to the National Academy.
Additional Cadets may apply and will be competitively selected until the Academy reaches capacity.
Each application will be reviewed by a selection process using law enforcement executives composed of
members of the Public Safety Cadets National Committee – Law Enforcement Sector, and the applicant
will be notified by June 1, 2019, or earlier.
ACADEMY CONTENT
The Academy will consist of interactive workshops, dynamic lectures, physical fitness, and field trips
around the National Capitol Region. Lessons taught throughout the week will provide historic reference
to leadership and failures of leadership in law enforcement. Cadets will visit the FBI Academy in
Quantico, Virginia, the National Law Enforcement Museum, the African American Museum of History and
Culture, and take part in a leadership lessons walking tour of select monuments in Washington, D.C.
PLAN
The academy will begin with a group meeting on Sunday afternoon August 4. The instructional portion
will last through late morning of August 10.
FEES
The cost to the participants will be transportation to and from Fairfax, Virginia. If travelling by air, use
Washington, D.C. airports (Dulles Airport [IAD] or Ronald Reagan Airport [DCA]). A $100.00
administration fee is required (DO NOT SEND ANY MONEY WITH APPLICATION). Some limited
Scholarships are available for Cadets who cannot afford the administration fee (see certification portion
on application). Cadets arriving early or staying late will be responsible for early/late costs and any
lodging and meals outside of the Academy. Spending money and uniform costs are the participant’s
responsibility. Lodging and meals are covered by Public Safety Cadets from the evening of August 4
through the morning of August 10.
UNIFORM/PHYSICAL TRAINING GEAR
Public Safety Cadets will provide two polo shirts, two t-shirts and one cap.
Each Cadet is responsible for the following: one unit dress uniform. Khaki colored trousers/BDU pants.
Khaki colored BDU style shorts. Physical training clothing: running shoes, white socks, t-shirts and
shorts.
DEADLINE
The completed application form with the appropriate certifications must be RECEIVED in the
national office no later than June 1, 2019. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
