WELCOME TO THE GILL BOOKS
CATALOGUE OF NEW BOOKS

Books on prescription

We hope that this season’s catalogue of books will help make you feel
good!

Three of our authors this season are doctors: Brendan Kelly, whose
wry and brilliantly observed The Doctor Who Sat for a Year follows his
attempts to try his own medicine and meditate for 15 minutes every
day; Lucia Gannon’s life-affirming All In a Doctor’s Day follows her life
and those of her patients in a small Tipperary village, illuminating the
universal fears, dramas and anxieties that touch all our worlds; and
Dr Eva Orsmond’s revolutionary Reverse Your Diabetes, which
encourages anyone suffering from type 2 diabetes to take control of
their health.

You’ll find lots of books to inspire you to live a better life, from Paula
Mee’s Mediterranean Mood Food to Mary Jennings’ Get Running, as
well as Stella O’Malley’s groundbreaking Fragile, Fiona Brennan’s The
Positive Habit and Siobhan Murray’s The Burnout Solution.

Children will enjoy the next book in the Little Library series from John
and Fatti Burke, Brian Boru: The Warrior King; the return of Spuds in
Spuds and the Crock of Gold, and a boredom-busting art activity book,
Be an Irish Explorer, which will keep them entertained for hours – surely
the best medicine for everyone!

We hope there’s a book here for you.

It has been ten years since Rachael Keogh was catapulted
into the public consciousness, when a shocking image
of her needle-ravaged arms – skin burnt from injecting
heroin into her wasted veins – made front pages around
the country. Desperate for help, she made a public appeal
to secure one of just 27 detox beds in Ireland so that she
could reclaim her life from the drugs that had ravaged
it. What followed was an extraordinary story of grit and
determination as she embarked on her recovery journey. It
                            became an instant bestseller.
This edition contains a new introduction from Rachael

Gaining independence from British rule has dominated
Irish history since the plantation of Ulster. This book

its aftermath. It covers the War of Independence, the great
leaders de Valera and Collins, the Anglo-Irish Treaty and
the Civil War. Told in captivating prose, it is the perfect gift

Majestic and magnificent, designed to both intimidate
and inspire, castles are a common feature across Ireland’s
landscape, with over 1,000 examples remaining – some intact,
some in ruins, all awesome. This book celebrates the most
popular Irish castles, from the Norman fortress of Bunratty to
the five-star splendour of Ashford, from medieval Malahide
to dramatic Dunluce, as well as introducing you to some of
Ireland’s most famous castle owners such as Grace O’Malley
(Rockfleet) and W.B. Yeats (Thoor Ballylea).

‘A HOUSE TO WHICH THE
BEST OF IRISH AUTHORS CAN
BRING THEIR MANUSCRIPTS’

When Michael Gill founded Gill in 1968, The Irish Times described it as ‘a welcome
enterprise’ and hoped it would become a home for the best of Irish authors.
Since then we’ve been honoured to publish the works of great writers and experts
such as Noël Browne, Garret FitzGerald, Tom Garvin, Éamon de Buitléar, Myrtle
Allen, Susan Jane White, Francis Brennan and Matt Cooper.
We’ve been there in good times and bad, publishing the books you choose to read on
every aspect of Irish life: from the 1960s bestseller Prayers of Life to How Stormont
Fell; from Rachel’s Favourite Food to The Encyclopaedia of Ireland; from the
heady high of The Pope’s Children to the popular reissuing of Soundings in 2010,
when perhaps we all needed a bit more poetry in our lives; from Jim McGuinness’
powerful Until Victory Always and Irelandopedia, which celebrated every county
in the country, to more recent bestsellers, Emer McLysaght and Sarah Breen’s The
Importance of Being Aisling, Davy Fitzgerald’s At All Costs, and Michael Healy-
Rae’s Time to Talk. Each book, in its own way, captures a slice of life, a slice of the
times we live in.
But it was really Michael’s great-great-grandfather who started our story. In 1856
Michael Henry Gill, then the printer to Dublin University, purchased the publishing
and bookselling business of James McGlashan, forming McGlashan & Gill, which
then became M.H. Gill & Son, then Gill & Macmillan and, in 2016, simply Gill.
The bookshop – popularly known as Gills and referenced in James Joyce’s Ulysses –
was located on Dublin’s O’Connell Street for 123 years until it closed in 1979.
Whether it’s printing, publishing or bookselling, we believe reading matters.
We’ve always believed in Irish talent and we’ve always believed in the curious mind
of the Irish reader. If we’ve managed to help produce something from one to satisfy
that of the other, it’s been a good day at the office.
Thanks for reading.
