ENSURING ACCESS AND FAIRNESS FOR ALL IN THE JUSTICE SYSTEM

The State Bar of Michigan and the Michigan State Bar Foundation thank all Michigan attorneys
who support access to justice. Providing pro bono legal services and financial donations for
civil legal aid plays an essential role in offering help to those in need. Each year, the pro bono
and financial contributions from Michigan attorneys make a significant impact toward increased
access to justice.
The Voluntary Pro Bono Standard, as adopted by the State Bar of Michigan Representative
Assembly, encourages Michigan attorneys to provide 30 or more hours of pro bono legal
services each year or contribute a minimum of $300 ($500 for those whose income allows) to
support civil legal services to low-income individuals. Many attorneys and law firms exceed
those standards, and these recognition lists show the significant efforts of Michigan attorneys.
In Michigan, eligible pro bono and civil legal aid clients live below 200 percent of federal poverty
guidelines. Almost 30 percent of all Michiganders are eligible to receive pro bono legal services
based on their income levels, equating to more than 3 million people. However, only about
20 percent of the legal needs of the poor are met. The need for civil legal services far outweighs
the resources available.
Supporting access to justice is a well-established tradition among many members of the legal
profession. Many Michigan lawyers regard pro bono legal service and financial support for access
to justice as much a personal endeavor as an aspirational obligation. While there is room to grow,
the State Bar of Michigan, Michigan State Bar Foundation, and Access to Justice Campaign
thank the following Michigan attorneys, law firms, and corporations for their ongoing support
and efforts to make access to justice for all a reality.
To celebrate the new A Lawyer Helps Pro Bono Honor Roll and Access to Justice Campaign
recognition programs, the complete lists are included on the following pages. Future recognition
lists in their entirety will be available for review on the State Bar of Michigan and the Access to
Justice Campaign websites, with components of the lists appearing in the Michigan Bar Journal.

Access to Justice Campaign 51
The Access to Justice Campaign seeks to ensure access and fairness for all in the justice system. The ATJ Campaign is a
collaborative centralized campaign, administered by the Michigan State Bar Foundation in partnership with the State Bar
of Michigan, to increase resources for 15 regional and statewide civil legal aid programs in Michigan. The participating
programs encourage legal community support through the ATJ Fund. The ATJ Campaign is pleased to publish and thank
the legal community for its financial support, through the first annual recognition lists. The lists include the following:
• Leadership Law Firm List—40 firms qualified for the Leadership Law Firm list in 2018. Leadership Law Firms are
recognized on a tiered list according to giving per attorney. The giving levels include tiers at $300, $500, $750,
and $1,000. The total amount includes both individual donations and firm donations.
• Champion Law Firms, Corporate Legal Departments, and SBM Sections—Recognized based on total dollars given.
Law firm and corporate legal department totals include both individual donations and firm donations.
• Champion Individuals—Individuals and solo practitioners are recognized on a tiered list, beginning at $300, based on
