KEY EVENT CHANGES A huge thanks to the Taupō District Council, Tuwharetoa, our suppliers, stakeholders, volunteers, the IRONMAN Group team and the local Taupō community for the unwavering support we have received since having to postpone the event to 27 March. We have made a few notable changes to the Event: 1. WELCOME TO TAUPŌ PRESENTATION There is no Welcome Function this year, but all athletes and supporters are invited to join us at 1:45pm on Thursday 25 March in the Race Village for an official welcome by some special guests. This will be followed by a Race Director Q+A and transition tour. 2. IRONMAN AWARDS FUNCTION There will be no awards presentation this year, however all awards will be available for collection at the Event Information Centre on Saturday 27 & Sunday 28 March. Award winners will be notified via text message and also keep an eye out on the event app and social media pages for announcement of award winners. 3. RESTAURANT PROGRAM In your gear bag, you will receive two $30NZD restaurant vouchers to spend at selected restaurants in Taupō between Thursday 25 – Sunday 28 March. We also invite all athletes and their supporters to an informal IRONMAN After Party at Finn’s Bistro and Beer Garden from 7:00pm Sunday 28 March to continue celebrating your IRONMAN journey. See page 40 for a link to participating restaurants. 4. RACE DAY TIMING There is no change to your IRONMAN start time of 8:00am. However due to reduced daylight hours, IRONMAN 70.3 athletes will start their race 20 minutes later than planned, and team swimmers will now start with individuals. View the Event Schedule on page 12 for more details. 5. IRONMAN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP ROLL DOWN Roll Down for 2021 IRONMAN World Championship 40 available slots will be managed electronically. During Athlete Check-In you will be asked to ‘opt in’ and confirm you intend to accept a slot should you qualify for the IRONMAN World Championship. If you are successful in obtaining a Qualification slot, we will be in contact 24hrs after the race to advise. See page 41 for details. 6. RECOMMENDED GEAR It will likely be a bit cooler on 27 March than earlier in the month and we recommend packing additional items in your Transition or Special Needs bags. This could include arm warmers, gloves and a jacket for the bike, and a head torch for the run. 4
RACE DIRECTOR MESSAGE Welcome to the 37th Nutri-Grain Remember to say a special thanks to the IRONMAN New Zealand. Mercury Volunteers and to your team of supporters, family and friends that have Whether this is your first IRONMAN helped you throughout your journey to get experience or your 37th we look forward to you to Taupō. celebrating your 2021 IRONMAN journey in Great Lake Taupō. We look forward to seeing you on the start line on Saturday 27 March. Taupō is the home of IRONMAN in New Zealand, which would not be possible without the support of the community of Taupō. Throughout your visit you will be supported by the locals that make this event like no other. As we return for the 23rd year to this stunning region we’re proud to call home, we recognise our principal partners Taupō District Council and Nutri-Grain, along with our family of sponsors, who will all be at the WAYNE REARDON event looking after you. We thank them all Race Director for their support of the event. I would also like to acknowledge Tuwharetoa Māori Trust Board for allowing access to Great Lake Taupō. Behind the scenes we have a team of local directors all from Taupō, who lead an army of 2200+ Mercury Volunteers, supporting you every step of your IRONMAN. Their commitment ensures the event is a success each year. We have made a couple of key changes to your IRONMAN journey in 2021. After considering the impact that the smaller- than-normal Nutri-Grain IRONMAN New Zealand field could have on your run course experience, we have moved to a four-lap run course. Please check the course maps for further details of aid station and Special Needs Bag locations. Please read this document carefully as there will be no race briefing this year, apart from a Q&A and Transition Tour with myself, where I will cover off some of the finer points of your race. 5
