what you need to know
Allow Us to Introduce Ourselves…
For those of you who already know us, Hello! And for those of you who are new to the UMe family, Welcome! We are
not your average credit union, and we think that is a great thing. Let’s start with our name. You + Me is what we are all
about. We care about the things that matter to you. As a Burbank institution, we’ve been committed to helping our
community since 1940. Through our long history, we’ve learned that there’s no limit to what we can accomplish
together. We want to help you through your first car, first home, and even your first puppy (we are very dog friendly).
We know life after High School can be a little nutty, and we want to help. How does a $2,500 scholarship sound? Here
at UMe, we are all about our community, and we want to support the students in our community who will go on to do
great things in the world. (That’s you!)

The Award
Each school year, UMe will award two (2) $2,500 scholarships to select students from Burbank high schools. Students
must be pursuing a college education and applicants must be in their senior year of a high school located in Burbank,
California, and meet all the eligibility requirements below. We will announce scholarship recipients in May.

Scholarship Eligibility
In order to be eligible for a 2020 UMe Scholarship, we require that you:
  ‣ earn a minimum overall G.P.A. of 3.0. (Copy of current transcript required.)
  ‣ must have a UMe account (checking or savings) in your name and it must be open for at least 3 months before the
    submission date, May 1, 2020.
  ‣ must be a senior enrolled in a high school located in Burbank, California.
  ‣ must be accepted for admission to a recognized junior college, accredited college or university, public or private,
offering academic, or vocational courses leading to a secondary education. (Copy of acceptance letter required.)
  ‣ must complete all requirements of the UMe Scholarship Application.

NOTE: Students who already have a full-scholarship are not eligible for this scholarship. Additionally, any UMe
employee (excluding UMe interns), Board Member, or their families are also not eligible.

How we will choose our winners…
To start off, class rank, SAT/ACT scores and financial need is not a criterion for this award. Applications will be judged
and chosen by a group of UMe’s Management Team. All decisions are final. The UMe Scholarship Program cannot
provide any information on the status of the applications.

Important Dates
  ‣ May 1, 2020: All completed scholarship applications must be submitted. (Late submissions will not be accepted.)
  ‣ May 2020: Winners of the UMe Scholarship Program will be announced and awarded at the High School Award
    Night of each recipient.
  ‣ June 12, 2020: UMe’s 80th Anniversary. Not directly related to the scholarship — but, we wanted to keep you in
the loop, so you can stop by and have some free lunch. We’re nice like that! :)
                                                                                                2020 UMe Scholarship / page 2 of 6

what you need to do
Personal Essay: Let’s get to know you! We want to know your story — so we can get a feel for who you are and
what makes you…. well, YOU! Write an essay (500 word minimum) about yourself. What is unique about you. What
do you care about? What matters to you? What has contributed to who you are. What are your dreams? Feel free to
include what subject you want to pursue in school and why, if that’s something you’re passionate about. We want to
see (read) your personality here. Please be genuine, we want the real you to shine through. Essay must be typed in a
legible font. UMe Insider Tip: At UMe, we like to have fun, and that’s exactly what this personal essay should be. We
aren’t your typical financial institution, and this personal essay shouldn’t be typical either!

Here is how the personal essays will be judged:
    ‣ Content: The essay answers any of the questions (asked in the prompt above) and holds the reader’s
        attention throughout the entire read.
    ‣ Organization: The essay is organized in a way that makes it flow and tells an engaging story (your story).
    ‣ Conventions: Good grammar, correct spelling, and great sentence structure is shown throughout the essay,
making it easy and enjoyable to read.
    ‣ Fun & Unique Tone: This essay should be personal, which means it should be unique to YOU. (We love
uniqueness!) We want this essay to feel fun and loose (but not sloppy) and we want to feel like we know you
and your personality by the very end.

Letters of Recommendation: Letters of recommendation are a great way to gain insight on the effect you have had
with leaders in the community, teachers, employers and coaches.

Notes For Your Recommendation Writer: The recommendation letter should address the applicant’s character, what
you believe are his/her greatest attributes, specific accomplishments, examples of leadership, and why you feel this
student deserves a UMe Scholarship Award. Please specify in which class, organization, or team you have
experience with the applicant - and the year, and include your contact information, in case we need to reach out to
you. Please limit your letter to 1 page typed.

Student Activity Sheets: Attached in the UMe Scholarship Program forms are the Student Activity Sheets. There,
you will find sections to enter your community & volunteer involvement, employment, extra curricular activities, and
recognition. If you need more room, feel free to print out multiple Student Activity Sheets.

Once You Have Completed Everything: Bust out into a happy dance! Then, make sure you get your application in to
us, here at UMe, by the submission deadline. Please include all forms in a folder of some kind, rather than stapling
everything together. Here is a little check list for you, in order to make sure you’re not missing anything:
