First of all, the sporting calendar was dismantled by the pandemic – there was simply less sport taking place after March. Secondly, there was a lot of other noise for sports events to cut through following the declaration of the pandemic, not least the fact that the virus was beginning to claim lives around the world. Thirdly, people may simply have been less receptive to sports news – it may have mattered to them less than usual, given everything that has gone on in 2020. The big question for sport going into 2021 is whether it can prove resilient enough to reclaim its place in the lives of the global population. The data we collect from around the world provides a pretty clear answer – that the sector is tightly woven into the fabric of popular culture. Yet as leagues and institutions get back to business, it’s critical to identify and evaluate their positioning among fans and in places around the world. Many things will likely change in the sporting industry but tracking the effects of these transformations can help brands and fans stay connected to one another.
