EVENTS LISTING CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF WELWYN GARDEN CITY IN 2020 I am delighted to be chairing the Welwyn Garden City Centenary Foundation and leading the celebrations for such a major milestone in the life of a garden city of world renown. We are planning an exciting year of events, projects and community-based initiatives highlighting the town’s history and celebrating Ebenezer Howard’s vision and ethos for healthy living and ‘true marriage of town and country’. Some events are ‘one-off’ to leave a lasting memory, whilst others are more enduring and will leave a legacy to inspire future generations. As a registered charity we have raised a significant amount of money privately and are extremely grateful to individuals, trusts, and local businesses for making these possible. We are also grateful to Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council. Our sterling team of some 70 volunteers have achieved an enormous amount since the planning started in 2014 and we are hugely grateful for their efforts. To complement the Foundation’s signature events, many more projects are being organised directly by community organisations, businesses, places of learning, the Local Authority and residents themselves. Peter Waine Chairman, Welwyn Garden City Centenary Foundation. OUR PATRON The Most Honourable The Marquess of Salisbury KG KCVO PC DL Robert Cecil, 7th Marquess of Salisbury is Patron of the Welwyn Garden City Centenary Foundation for the 2020 celebrations. The Marquess and Marchioness of Salisbury have long been supporters of many community organisations in Welwyn Garden City and continue to take a close interest in the affairs of the town. Lord Robert Cecil continues the tradition started by his great-grandfather, James Cecil, 4th Marquess of Salisbury, who was a friend and supporter of Ebenezer Howard and also a strong advocate of the Garden City movement. He was elected to represent Great Britain as Vice President of the International Garden Cities and Town Planning Federation nearly a century ago. Lord Salisbury lives in Hatfield House, the ancestral home of the Cecils, which adjoins the garden city on the south side. 4 3

SCHOOLS BULBS AND TREES PLANTING Our school children plant for the next 100 years in Welwyn Garden City During the autumn of 2019, 20 of our town’s primary schools planted nearly 50,000 bulbs and 100 fruit trees to bloom in spring of 2020! Each school received 2020 bulbs for pupils to plant, a mix of daffodils, crocus and snowdrops which will come into flower for the first time in our centenary year leaving a wonderful legacy of which all the children can be proud As well as planting, pupils learned about the history of Welwyn Garden City and how plants and trees benefit the local environment. The project has been generously sponsored by John Lewis, Waitrose, The Stefanou Foundation, The Hobson Charity and Hertfordshire County Council’s locality budget. The bulb and tree planting is being run by community charity Groundwork East. Below: our sponsors with pupils at Holy Family Catholic Primary School in Crookhams and Head Teacher Katie Linnane. “We are delighted to sponsor this project. From the very first days, Welwyn Stores was at the centre of the new Garden City and as successors to The Stores, we want to remain at the heart of the community long into the future.” Jonathan Field, Partner and Head of Branch of John Lewis, Welwyn Garden City “This project will help pupils make the connection between increasing plant life and improving the quality of the local environment, as well as encouraging them to celebrate and feel part of their local community” Sam Harbour, Project Officer, Groundwork East 14
EVENTS LISTING SCHOOLS PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION A huge early success for the Centenary has been to involve children attending schools in Welwyn Garden City and surrounding villages in our photography competition. The objective is to make children aware of the Centenary, get them involved, observe and appreciate their surroundings and capture images of places and people in Welwyn Garden City through their young eyes. We started in 2017 with "Street Photography", in 2018 "Sports and Leisure", and in 2019 "School and Home". We have seen the number of entries per year blossom from 42 in 2017 to 510 in 2019. The 2020 theme will be "Celebrations" The competition upload page becomes available on 1st January 2020 and closes on 17th July 2020 just after the WGC Centenary Carnival. We are hoping that the theme of "Celebrations" will allow children to capture the atmosphere of the Centenary year, from big events to their own celebrations at home or at school, or just a celebration of life living in the wonderful environment of WGC in its 100th Year. To read more about the competition and view previous winners, visit www.wgc100.org and to upload entries for 2020 visit www.wgccspc.co.uk 15

COMMEMORATING EBENEZER HOWARD We are delighted to announce that to mark our centenary in 2020 we will have a new sculpture of Sir Ebenezer Howard, the man who had a vision and who devoted his life to making that vision become a reality. The commission of the sculpture is generously supported by the Wheat Quarter in conjunction with the Digswell Arts Trust. Internationally renowned local sculptor Ben Twiston-Davies was chosen to create the statue. Part of his training included time at the Royal School of Drawing. He is responsible for the sculpture of Agatha Christie in Cambridge Circus, outside the theatre showing the The Mousetrap. Part of the commission is to develop the piece through a community participation process including residents in the town and particularly school children. The sculpture will engage the interest of the international garden city movement and encourage their wider involvement in our celebratory year. Sculptor Ben Twiston-Davies 17

CITY OF TREES One of the greatest pleasures of Welwyn Garden City is the beauty and variety of over 19,000 trees in its streets and public places. The ‘City of Trees’ project, an urban arboretum, celebrates this legacy. Information about the trees was collated by volunteers and used to develop a series of walks. A new website and series of leaflets will be available at www.wgccityoftrees.org.uk. The information will also provide an educational resource for schools. From an idea by Andrew Carnegie, the City of Trees has been developed with the assistance of the members of WGC Horticultural Society, Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, Sherrardspark Wood Wardens, and other volunteers in the Garden City. The tree trails are based in areas of the town with concentrations of noteworthy trees. These are: The Campus and Parkway . Woodhall and Beehive Handside and Stanborough . EVENTS LISTING CENTENARY WALK One of the many wonderful things about Welwyn Garden City is that we are surrounded by green fields and countryside. Ebenezer Howard’s original vision was ‘a true marriage of town and country’. To celebrate this vision, one of our signature projects is a brand new Centenary Walk. The walk encompasses the whole town, joining existing footpaths and rights of way into a attractive 20.20km circular route. This route will be a permanent legacy lasting well beyond the centenary year. The Route The circular walk takes in some beautiful locations around Welwyn Garden City, including Stanborough Lakes, Mill Green, The Commons local nature reserve, the site of Panshanger Aerodrome, Tewin Bury Farm, Digswell, Monks Walk, Sherrardspark Woods, Ayot Green, Brocket Hall and Lemsford. Accessible Circuit Connecting to the main circuit, we have created a wide flat surfaced circular track extending for a mile and incorporating part of the Commons Local Nature Reserve. The Centenary walk can be accessed from the town centre via spokes which will radiate to and from the perimeter. We will be holding an official opening of our new walk early in 2020. The first main christening of the walk will be a community fundraising event organised by the Welwyn and Hatfield Rotary Clubs whose annual sponsored walk will follow our centenary walk route. You can see our route on the beautifully illustrated map in the centre of this souvenir guide 21

Studio Lisa and the Royal Family Jimmie and Lisa Sheridan built a photographic studio at 14 Parkway in Welwyn Garden City in March, 1934. Studio Lisa was already well known in the press and advertising world for the illustrations provided for commercial products and for special magazine features. The faces of many local Garden Citizens also achieved nation-wide familiarity on posters and in magazines as they used many locals to act as models. They branched out into portraiture and a chance meeting in 1936 gave them the opportunity of a lifetime when Studio Lisa was engaged by the then Duke and Duchess of York to take casual photos of their family, including the Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret. The hiring of Studio Lisa proved to be both revolutionary and popular as it humanised the royal family in the eyes of their subjects. The friendship spanned over 30 years and 13 photographic sessions. Read more about this fascinating story in a book published in Spring 2019 – ‘Informally Royal’ by Rodney Laredo. The couple’s daughter, Dinah Sheridan became a famous actress. Some of her most popular roles were in the 1958 film ‘Genevieve’ and ‘The Railway Children’ in 1970. 22

GRAHAM FISHER, CHIEF EXECUTIVE, LETCHWORTH GARDEN CITY HERITAGE FOUNDATION Ebenezer Howard set out an unrivalled vision for creating beautiful places and communities where everyone can enjoy a great quality of life. He defined a sense of utopia that was aspirational while also being deliverable, combining the best of nature with the infrastructure and opportunities of urban life. All of this was underpinned by the overarching goal of improving the quality of life for everyone who lives there. That vision was expressed in the creation of garden cities and it is with great pleasure that we can, here in Letchworth Garden City, celebrate with you, our friends and neighbours in Welwyn Garden City, your remarkable centenary milestone, as another beautiful place where everyone can enjoy and benefit from a great quality of life. It is a testament to Howard’s vision that both our garden cities remain true to the original concepts while adapting and continually evolving to the changes, pressures and opportunities of 20th and 21st Century living. That is how it should be – thriving communities shape the future by being informed of the past; holding true to principles and continuing to evolve them, responsive to people’s changing needs, technological and ecological changes and advances. It is good to see that spirit is still very much alive in Welwyn Garden City today and embodied in your centenary programme, which we hope will be a great success. Celebrations are a good opportunity to reflect on the meaning and special nature of relationships and to refresh them for the future. Both Letchworth and Welwyn share an ambitious heritage and an exciting future and we extend a very warm welcome to everyone who joins you in your celebrations to also join us in Letchworth too. 24

CENTENARY GARDEN The team’s ambition was to deliver a show garden on Main Avenue at the world famous RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2020 to celebrate the Centenary of the town and its founder Sir Ebenezer Howard and to put the town in the media spotlight. A brilliant design was chosen by an expert judging panel following a competition organised under the auspices of the Society of Garden Designers. The winning design was the result of detailed research into the history of Welwyn Garden City and, with the local community very much in mind, the garden was to be returned to the town centre to be a place of enjoyment for all and a lasting legacy to the man who dreamed of ‘the marriage of town and country’. The garden design passed the critical scrutiny of the RHS’s selection panel and had been allocated a place at RHS Chelsea for 2020. However, to the great sadness and disappointment of the volunteers who have worked so hard to realise this ambition, our main sponsor withdrew their financial support. In spite of determined efforts by the team, another sponsor could not be found in the limited time available under the RHS’s 2020 timetable. It remains our intention to deliver a Centenary Garden in the centre of Welwyn Garden City, not only to mark the hundred years since our town’s foundation but also to act as an inspiring and uplifting social gathering space for residents, shoppers and visitors to enjoy for decades to come. From the outset this has always been a community led project, and generously supported by national and local businesses who had kindly agreed to donate goods and services to help realise the garden at RHS Chelsea. We very much hope that those businesses and others will be able to continue to give their valued support to the re-focused Centenary Garden project, to deliver a living commemoration of our town and the wider garden city movement inspired by Sir Ebenezer Howard. 28 29

Did you know? SHREDDED WHEAT FACTORY Shredded Wheat was created in America in 1890. The factory in Welwyn Garden City opened in 1926 and was one of the earliest to be built in the town. The tall concrete grain silos that form part of the factory are a local landmark and are listed structures. It was the healthy image of the town which attracted the American firm with its clean and pleasant surroundings. The new Wheat Quarter will echo the original principles on which Welwyn Garden City was founded – combining the benefits of healthy living with industry. Shredded Wheat has a place in UK popular culture and became particularly well known after its 'Three Shredded Wheat' campaign which suggested that the cereal was so nourishing it was impossible to eat three. The Shredded Wheat factory finally ceased production in January 2008, after 73 years in Welwyn Garden City. Did you know? “Meals on Wheels” Welwyn Garden City was the first town to introduce Meals on Wheels. The Women’s Volunteer Service set up their Meals on Wheels service in response to enquiries as to whether some sort of “meals on wheels” service could be organised for the aged and infirm people in the town who were experiencing a difficult time owing to the fact that the able and stronger people who had assisted them were now performing war-time duties. In December 1943, the first meals on wheels were delivered in Welwyn Garden City at a cost of 6d per meal and served using a small car. By November 1944, WVS members were delivering 213 meals a month. By 1962 four million meals were being served in 790 areas across the UK. Several versions of the service still exist today. Meals on Wheels was, according to Lady Reading, “Given its name over lunch at her home by her driver.” 30

SPORT FOR ALL Welwyn Garden City - a town designed for healthy living - is an appropriate place for a celebration of sport to mark the Centenary, especially in the 2020 Olympic year. The many sports clubs in the town and the facilities at Gosling Sports Park, Stanborough Lakes, and schools, will host special events, involving over 8,000 people. The appetite to get involved has been staggering and we hope that some of the town’s sporting celebrities will be encouraged to participate! © dragonboatfestivals 48 clubs and sports organisations are signed up and raring to go. During the year they will hold over 70 events, a quite remarkable achievement. There will be opportunities for those interested in sport, even if you are not competing, to go along to watch many of the events and, perhaps to be inspired to get involved. Our Sport for All celebrations will be good for health, will bring communities together and provide an opportunity for our clubs to attract new members. Generous funding from local companies has enabled us to provide support for all events, covering costs for trophies, medals, and hire of pitches and equipment. Invaluable assistance is being given by GLL/Better, which manages all of the town’s major public sports venues and facilities, and Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council are similarly enthusiastic in their support, including organising the Dragon Boat racing. For more information see our events listing or visit www.wgc100.org 38
