Revised 12/23/2021
Welcome to New Frontiers for Lifelong Learning!

The fee to join New Frontiers is just $60 per year! You can attend as many classes as you want for
that fee. Membership is for a full year from September 1 – August 31, although you can become a
member anytime.
If you are new to New Frontiers, you will first need to enroll as a non-credit student through MCC. Go
to newfrontiers.mesacc and select “Join Now” and you’ll find the information you need to enroll. The
annual enrollment and paying fees for new members will need to be done online.

How to Register for New Frontiers Classes

Go to newfrontiers.mesacc.edu and select “Member’s Acct”.

Follow the instructions on the Search/Login screen through the CHECKOUT process.
NOTE: If the box to select the student you wish to register does not appear on your screen,
disregard that instruction.

To finalize your class registrations:
   a. Check the Terms-of-Use box, “ □
I have read and agree with the policies…”
   b. Click on CONTINUE (it should be highlighted).

To see your registrations online:
             • You must be logged in, and on the Search/Login screen.
             • Select “My Account”. You may have to search for this option. If you see a
“wheel”, similar to a Settings icon, click on that; or if “Account” appears after your
name, at the top right, select the arrow beneath that. Your screen may differ,
                   depending on your computer device.
             • When you find “My Account”, scroll down to the bottom of the page, where you
should find “Account Registrations” among other options.

If you do not find your classes listed under “Account Registrations”, you have missed a step
and will need to repeat the registration process.

Be sure to Log Off to exit. Again, you may have to poke around on the Search/Login screen to find
the Logoff button, depending on what computer device you are using.

If you have problems registering, you may call the office (480-461-7497) for help.

                                         Important Dates to Remember:

SOCIAL SCIENCES
America's Struggle Against Slavery
How do you slay a many-headed monster? How do you defeat an economic system deaf to the cries of
conscience and morality? How do you destroy an entrenched special interest that profits from treating
people like property?
For three centuries, men and women committed to resisting the spread of slavery in British North America
and the new United States grappled with these questions, searching for ways to save themselves and
others from the dehumanizing consequences of commodification.
This course offers a rare chance to step into their shoes. As we examine the different tools and tactics,
means, and methods that Americans, both black and white, have used to escape slavery or try to
exterminate it, we will confront the grand problems that animated all those who fought to end slavery.

1939 New York World's Fair
Presenter: Stephen Siek ASU Emeritus College Professor

The World of Tomorrow: A Visit to the 1939 New York World’s Fair. While the modern marvels of Chicago’s 1893
World’s Fair were offset by Renaissance palaces, the New York Fair of 1939 paid little homage to the
past. By contrast, it was entirely future-oriented, symbolized by a streamlined Trylon and Perisphere, by
RCA’s pavilion built in the shape of a radio tube, and perhaps most emphatically by Norman Bel Geddes’s
“Futurama” housed in the General Motors pavilion – a land of Oz where radio-controlled cars traveled at
breakneck speed through cities which soared to the sky. This class will journey back to a billion-dollar
exposition that once promoted science-fiction miracles as just around the corner – but fell far short of
bringing about its promised utopia.

Capitalism versus Socialism Part 2
This course covers the important economic systems in the world today. It also addresses the historical
background and big ideas that created the different economic systems. The actual development of British
and American capitalism highlights the advances and problems created by industrial capitalism. The reaction
to the excesses of early industrial capitalism created the first socialist movements that attempted to reform
and improve the capitalist system.
This is one of the Great Course series containing 24 separate lectures. This session will cover the second 12
lectures. The lectures are self-contained and NFLL members do not need to attend all lectures. A list of
individual lectures can be found on the Great Course website: https://www.thegreatcourses.com/courses/

Mesa-City on the Rise
Presenter: Jay Mark

Mesa-City on the Rise-a 144 Year Retrospective
Mesa was settled 144 years ago when hardy pioneers began transforming a scrub-brush covered desert from tiny
village to major metropolis. But sadly, nearly all of its early buildings and homes have disappeared. So, where have
all the structures gone? To answer that question, Jay Mark dug deep into photo archives to uncover long forgotten
images that help reveal the story of Mesa's past and its remarkable architecture. This lively, entertaining presentation
offers residents and visitors a new and fascinating view of the Gem City.

Location: MCC Dobson Date: Fri, Feb 18 Time: 2:00 - 4:00 pm

The Remarkable Buckhorn Baths Story
Presenter: Jay Mark

From Fire to Empire-The Remarkable Buckhorn Baths Story
Over the course of seven decades the Buckhorn Mineral Baths and Wildlife Museum became one of Mesa's and the
State's most recognizable and memorable Main Street icons - attracting celebrities and others to its healing waters,
wildlife museum and quirky amenities. Arguably, the Buckhorn, was a principal influence on enticing major league
baseball to begin annual spring training in Mesa and the Valley. The fascinating account of Ted & Alice Sliger and
their rags-to-riches story should not be missed. Jay Mark, co-author of the Buckhorn Book, will show many never
before seen historic photographs.

Mikhail Gorbachev
Gorbachev’s moral courage changed the world between 1985-1993 and we are still living in the shadow of his
actions, as well as those of others, in the 21st century. Questions such as: “what is democracy,” “how does a
country change from a Command economy to a market driven one,” or “how does a leader gain influence in
international relations” are reflected in Gorbachev’s actions while he was President of Russia. The course will
examine the context prior to the end of the Cold War to the present. This class was offered in the fall semester

Presenter: Nydia Montijo, MPH

This training from the Dementia-Friendly America National Network will ensure that you are! Arizona has the
second-highest growth rate for Alzheimer’s- which is the 6th leading cause of death in the U.S. and just one of

more than just a memory problem? If you are diagnosed, what kind of quality of life can someone expect? Our
workshop will cover these questions and more, including what dementia actually is, what the warning signs are,
and how to create an environment that is friendly to those who have been diagnosed. The question isn’t about
