2020 DOTY WINNERS Each of our sports selects one team each year to receive the Dog of the Year (DOTY) award for that sport. This is the highest accolade that can be awarded at BDOC, and recognises outstanding and consistent performance in competition throughout the award period alongside the handler’s contribution to the running of the club Congratulations to our DOTY award winners for 2020! DISC DOG PETER WIGGINS AND MILO Milo was our amazing 9 year old Border Collie. He tried many dog spots over the years and achieved titles in Rally Obedience and Agility, however the sport he loved the most was Disc Dogs. As soon as the disc came out all Milo wanted to do was go out there and catch it. Milo was never the fastest dog on the course, but he was always very consistent. He rarely dropped any catch, missed any obstacle or was distracted from bringing the disc back. The highlight of Milo’s disc career was a 1st place finish in 2019-20 Summer Series. The series comprised of 18 events, played over 6 different weeks and Milo was able to come out on top. We are so grateful that Milo found his sport, and would like to thank the whole Disc Dog team for their support. TRICK DOG LISE SANDENBERGH AND FENIX Initially trick training was just a fun way to keep a young, mischievous Fenix busy and out of trouble. For Fenix however, it quickly became one of his favourite activities and he regularly shows off his trained (or made up) tricks when he thinks it's time for some extra treats. Trick training has improved our teamwork and my training skills immensely, and has been surprisingly useful in everyday life. Being able to cue Fenix to hop onto the vet's scale, or lift his paws to wipe off mud, definitely makes life easier. Competing at the first ANKC Trick dog trial in Australia (hosted by none other than the amazing BDOC volunteers), has been a highlight in our trialling careers. I hope that the sport continues to grow and motivate more handlers to have fun training their dogs. A big thank you to the BDOC Trick dog instructors and volunteers who have made training and trialling for Trick dog possible. Volume 14 / Issue 1 / January 2021 BELCONNEN DOG OBEDIENCE CLUB / 6
RALLY OBEDIENCE MAELYN DRAPER AND TANGO I first fell in love with dog training and obedience via my first dog Chloe, a happy Jack Russell x Pug who’s up for anything if there are snacks involved. Two years later along came Tango the Toller, whom I had selected specifically with an obedience career in mind. Tango developed a love for training and off to the trial ring we went. He gained titles in conformation, trialling obedience, rally obedience, lure coursing, agility, and tricks. We also dabbled with retrieving despite his disdain for water and dead birds, as well as noseworks. Our trialling career was not without struggle, we suffered from one of the most common problems experienced by trialling teams, where everything looks perfect in training but falls apart in the trial ring. We worked hard to overcome this issue, taking an extended break from trialling to work on our foundation skills and overall engagement. This journey led us to many interesting workshops, countless private lessons, and eventually the privilege of being invited to join Team K9 Pro. Back at BDOC, Tango also served as my trusty assistant and demo dog for a number of obedience and rally obedience intakes over the years. The last two years of our trialling career were by far our best ones, with Tango giving beautiful, consistent and most importantly happy performances. Our highlights include a perfect scoring Novice obedience round, a number of very respectable scores in Rally Master, and being the first Toller to obtain our Trick Dog Starter title. We had so many more goals that I wanted to achieve, but sadly Tango was taken from me by cancer in September. It’s truly an honour to be awarded Rally Obedience Dog of the Year, thank you to my BDOC family who have coached, problem solved, supported and celebrated with us throughout our trialling career. TRIALLING OBEDIENCE KAREN HOBSON AND ABBY Abby entered the world at breakneck speed and at 8 weeks came to me with 2 modes: asleep and ON! I had a powerhouse on my hands, and couldn’t be happier. (Maelyn’s words still echo in my head: ‘You like your dogs a little crazy’.) Over the past 4 ½ years we have channelled her energy into obedience, agility, tracking and, more recently, tricks, as her desire to please has no limit. The ride has not always been easy. Abby – aka Lifesong Out Of The Abyss – has left me teetering on the edge more times than I can count. Her driven attitude raises dust, literally, in the obedience ring, as she attacks each exercise at a frenetic pace. If she could speak I’m sure she would be shouting at me to CATCH UP! While I love this level of energy, it is not always what you need. ‘Scent work is a calm exercise,’ I was told, as the scent discrimination articles went flying. Abby and I raised our eyebrows, and went back to the drawing board. The articles were still a work in progress when Abby entered her first UD trial in August 2020. By the end of the day she had her first pass and, 4 months later, her UD title. I am the first to admit that I have set some pretty high bars for this girl, but it seems that Abby has set them even higher. I have been blessed with an awesome dog who is always ready to train, and always has more to give. I’m just trying to keep up. Volume 14 / Issue 1 / January 2021 BELCONNEN DOG OBEDIENCE CLUB / 7
DISC DOGS @ BDOC Written by Catherine Griffin TRAINING 2020/21 BDOC Disc Dogs have continued to train on Friday evenings over the session break participating in The Pooch Affair’s Dogs Day Out demonstration and competing in competitions. We have introduced theory lessons are part of training when formal training has to be cancelled due to extreme weather. This will allow Disc members to continue to establish and consolidate skills learnt during practical lessons. Jack (left) and Maple (right) at The Pooch Affair’s Dogs Day Out demonstration TEAM IN FOCUS KATE WITH JAZZ AND JUNIPER When did you start Disc and why? I started disc when BDOC held it’s first beginner disc workshop back in 2017. I was already competing in Flyball and thought disc would be another fun, high energy sport that my dogs would like. What is your favourite game and why? Jazz Frizgility. I love the addition of the agility in this game paired with medium-long throws. I enjoy the challenge of seeing how many rounds we can successfully complete in 60 seconds. What is your greatest achievement? Achieving a personal best score of 140 with Jazz in Frizgility. What do you hope to achieve in the future? I hope to be able to master my long throws for games such as Time Warp. What advice would you give anyone considering starting Disc at BDOC? Good throws are so important to your team’s success. Practice as much as you can-short, medium and long. Most importantly however, just have Juniper a crack and enjoy the interaction with your dog! RALLY AND TRIALLING OBEDIENCE Written by Cheryl Neal So I think I understand Rally and Obedience, but maybe not... The main difference between Rally (formerly Rally Obedience) and Obedience is that in Rally signs tell you what to do and you can talk to your dog as much as you’d like, whereas in Obedience the judge tells you what to do and, other than giving your dog hand/voice cues, you remain silent. Handlers in Canine Companion classes who have satisfactorily completed Bronze or above and who are interested in learning Rally Obedience and/or Obedience, should contact the BDOC office for more info or email obedience@bdoc.asn.au. BDOC runs a combined Foundations class for club members interested Anne and Goose compete in Rally in Trialling Obedience and Rally. Members and their dogs then graduate to Trialling Obedience class on Tuesday evenings at 7pm, and/or Rally Obedience class on Sunday mornings. These classes are for handlers and their dogs who are close to, or already competing in trials. When you are successful at a trial you receive a qualification card aka “a quallie”. Once your dog has the required number of qualifications (usually three at the lower levels) you can apply for your title which means the dog gets letters after its name. The first titles to achieve are CCD (Community Companion Dog) in Trialling Obedience and RN (Rally Novice) in Rally. Both Obedience and Rally had an official rules review last year under the auspices of the Australian National Kennel Council. There have only been a few minor changes in Obedience, but Rally has seen the introduction of new signs from 1 January 2021. The lowest level (Novice) remains Down stay line up of CCD dogs the same but new signs have been introduced from Advanced upwards. Recent Rally classes have seen handlers discussing the footwork and dog positions required to complete the new signs. Want to learn how to execute the new Rally signs? See the videos uploaded by Shanelle Corben on Youtube at https://www.youtube. com/playlist?list=PLX8oV4qgHAo9rZmLOiJVFA-MmLv6yxEHp. A big thanks yet again to the Instructors who take the various classes and the class participants who jump in to help with Figure 8 and other exercises where ‘stewards’ are required. No instructors = no classes. Maelyn Draper has led the Foundation classes in 2020, whilst Anne Lewis sets courses and runs Rally training.Trialling Obedience classes have most recently been coordinated by Cheryl Neal. Happy training everyone! Lise and Fenix practice their heelwork Volume 14 / Issue 1 / January 2021 BELCONNEN DOG OBEDIENCE CLUB / 10
INTRODUCTION TO TRICKS Written by Niccola Hardaker. Photos by Holdfast Photography. WHAT IS A TRICK DOG TEST? Trick Dogs became an official ANKC sport in 2020, so you can now earn Trick Dog titles by competing in Trick Dog Tests. You start at Starters level, and choose six tricks from a list of twenty. You get to choose the ones you and your you dog enjoy most! Tricks at starters level are pretty simple, and many of them will be familiar to those of you going through our BDOC companion classes – paw on hand for 2 seconds, spin, paws up on a pivot platform, or send to a mat from 2m all count as starters tricks. When competing you perform each trick, as described in the rules, and you can reward your dog with food or toys at the reward station (usually a table near the entrance). You will be scored on how well your dog performs the trick, but judges are also looking for teamwork, relationship and enjoyment. HOW DO I GET STARTED AT BDOC? We run trick dog and DWD classes on Sunday afternoons, starting at 4pm in summer, and 3pm in the cooler months. We start teams at any time, as we find most dogs work at different paces for different tricks. Just email dwd@bdoc.asn.au if you are interested. You can check out the rules (including the complete trick list) at http://ankc.org.au/ media/9384/20-trick-dog-rules-2020v3.pdf. OH CRAP! Did you know that according to the RSPCA. there’s an estimated 4.2 million dogs in Australia, that create over 1200 kilograms of waste PER DAY! If each of those dogs was walked once a day and their responsible owner picked up after them with a bag, over 1.5 billion bags would be used every year! BDOC would love to provide the highest quality environmentally friendly waste bags, however as a volunteer run not-for-profit organisation our budget is limited. In 2021 we would like to encourage our handlers to source their own biodegradable bags and use them at the club where possible. We will still continue to provide the bags we have in stock whilst we seek to identify affordable options. There are a variety of options to purchase however quite a few club members have recommended Oh Crap! bags found at: https://www.ohcrap.com. au/#benefits So lets look after our environment and 1. Bag It 2. Bin It 3. Self “Hi 5” Yes – it’s that easy!!!! Volume 14 / Issue 1 / January 2021 BELCONNEN DOG OBEDIENCE CLUB / 11
