Masterpiece: Sandition This 8-part series begins Sunday, January 12 at 8pm When Jane Austen was chronically ill with a mysterious disease in early 1817, she turned her thoughts to a happier subject. She started work on a witty and delightful novel set in a seaside town. She never finished it. Now, noted screenwriter Andrew Davies finishes the story and brings it to the television. Sanditon tells the story of the joyously impulsive, spirited and unconventional Charlotte Heywood and her spiky relationship with the humorous, charming Sidney Parker. When a chance accident transports her from her rural hometown of Willingden to the would-be coastal resort of the eponymous title, it exposes Charlotte to the intrigues and dalliances of a seaside town on the make, and the characters whose fortunes depend on its commercial success. The twists and turns of the plot, which takes viewers from the West Indies to the rotting alleys of London, exposes the hidden agendas of each character and sees Charlotte discover herself and ultimately find love. Pictured on the cover: Rose Williams as Charlotte Heywood American Masters: Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool Tuesday, February 25 at 8pm Discover the man behind the legend. John Yourd was one of the founders of Lakeland PBS and worked tirelessly for over ten years to bring public television to Northern Minnesota throughout the 70s. John was 2020 Mixed Doubles Nationals also instrumental in helping bring KAWB channel 22 to the Brainerd lakes area in 1988. John was not only generous with his time, but also with his treasure. This year, Mike Smith was honored as our 2019 John Yourd Pillar Award recipient. Mike has served on our board of directors since 2014 and has served in various committee and officer roles including as Board Chair. Mike is a no-nonsense, “get-it-done” kind of guy and I really appreciate that leadership style. Mike’s background in business and management has been very helpful to both me and Lakeland PBS and Mike and his leadership skills will certainly be missed. Mike did offer to be available if needed and I’m sure I’ll be taking him up on his offer with a call now and them. If you know Mike, please congratulate him on receiving this special award and for his service to Lakeland PBS. Last December in this same article I mentioned that people had been asking us how they could watch Lakeland PBS live on digital devices. At that time, I said that it was a complicated issue that was more restricted by program licensing issues than it was by technology issues.
