Sixth Form Bulletin w/c 1st March 2021 Dear All, Wow! What a week of announcements and planning it has been. On Monday we were given the very welcome news that students could return to school on March 8th and we can’t wait to welcome you back. You should have received by email a consent form for Covid testing – please complete this and try and organise your first test. You will also receive further details about the return to school in your assembly and via email this week. There are a few changes in the 6th form for the weeks between March 8th and Easter I have listed below – it is very important that we keep to these, so everyone remains safe. • 12 and 13 remain in one bubble. • Common room only open from 10.40 -1.10 pm. Masks must be on, windows open etc. • Please only come in for your lessons or be at home. If you need to remain in school, there will be a designated, supervised study space for you to work. • Students can also study in the 6th form library and the corridor. If the corridor becomes busy, you may be asked to move to the study room. • Private study is cancelled until Easter • Social distancing needs to be kept to where possible. • You can continue to use the outside space by the pod and main canteen. • Do not leave the school site during the day unless you are going home. You should not be going into town to buy lunch or gathering off site in any way. This remains against the law. In addition to the news of schools returning, on Thursday we also had information from the government regarding awarding of grades for A levels and GCSEs. Mrs Joyce has written to all Y13 families about what that means for us at St John’s and will follow this up with an assembly next week. I appreciate that this is an anxious time for you all but please try not to worry. The school is working towards a fair system and will update you again shortly. Despite all the changes, many things continue as planned. Online lessons continue until you return to school and for Y12 this will include a preparing to
drive session from a local driving instructor in your next Wellbeing lesson. On Tuesday at 6.30, St Mary’s Calne have invited interested students and parents to join them online for an Oxbridge and Medicine information session. Details have been emailed to Y12 students. In this bulletin Mrs Havill has included a wide range of careers opportunities for you to explore and Mrs Singleton has reviewed a very interesting book. Finally, remember Friday 5th March is the school’s unplugged day. Please take the opportunity to stay away from your screens and, if possible, to get out into the fresh air. Work will be set in advance via SMHW and will not need a computer to complete. So, with a busy few weeks ahead, I will remind you to please get in touch if we can help or support you in anyway, Kind regards, Mrs Haig-Williams and the Sixth Form Team Support available throughout lockdown and beyond: • School – tutors / teachers / school nurse • Online support such as YoungMinds - children and young people's mental health charity • Gilly Beer – school counsellor – 6th Form - Thursday and Friday. gbeer@stjohns.excalibur.org.uk WORLD BOOK DAY THURSDAY 4TH MARCH Whilst we are not in school this year for WBD we still have lots of ideas and activities to celebrate books and reading. Why not join in the celebration by taking part in the following events and there will be edible prizes for the best entries when you return to school:- • Decorate your bedroom door or window as a book cover and then email a photo to astokes@stjohns.excalibur.org.uk • 6 Word novels are back! These can send a powerful message and are actually very thought provoking. An example is ‘For sale, baby shoes, never worn’ Send your entries as above. • A new idea this year is to create your own literary quiz to play with your family or zoom with friends – we would love to see what you come up with and have a go.
• Send me a clip of you reading aloud from your favourite book, a picture of you reading in an unusual place, or post what you are currently reading. What was your favourite book when you were younger? Take a look at the WBD newsletter to get more ideas, and remember that reading is a perfect way to escape lockdown! And finally two book recommendations from me:- Girl with the louding voice by by Abi Dare and Forget my name by J S Monroe Happy reading! Choose the pair talking - details Book of the week: Ms Singleton Bring Up The Bodies by Hilary Mantel (2012) ‘Wiltshire, 1535. His children are falling from the sky.’ It is certainly an arresting opening! The novel had me hooked from the start – a lyrical description of hunting with falcons, near Wolf Hall in Savernake Forest. I relished the local setting, though set back nearly five hundred years, and Mantel’s stunning descriptions. She manages to convey places, people, conversations and events with such grace and ease. You feel immersed in the world she creates. Bring Up The Bodies is the sequel to her novel ‘Wolf Hall’ and it follows the fortunes of Thomas Cromwell, the lowly born son of a blacksmith whose intelligence and sense of purpose take him to the heights of the court of Henry VIII, whom he serves as chief minister. The novel follows the downfall of Henry VIII’s second wife, Anne Boleyn after just three years of marriage to the king. She has failed to produce a male heir, and Henry’s eyes are wandering. Although the story is well known, and we understand exactly how it will end, Mantel’s novel still manages to be gripping and tense. It vividly communicates the terror of those implicated in the plot, at a time when torture and brutal executions were common. The warring families of the nobility, the politicking and intrigue, and the cool machinations of Cromwell are all rendered with conviction and clarity. There is nothing dusty or dry about this historical novel: it is a terrific read from start to finish. Ted Talk: Temple Grandin: The world needs all kinds of minds
Temple Grandin, diagnosed with autism as a child, talks about how her mind works -- sharing her ability to "think in pictures," which helps her solve problems that neurotypical brains might miss. She makes the case that the world needs people on the autism spectrum: visual thinkers, pattern thinkers, verbal thinkers, and all kinds of smart geeky kids. Keeping fit and healthy: Well done to everyone you took part in the challenge over half term walking/ running for Captain Tom. We have had some fantastic mileages in from tutor groups, even over 500 miles! If you have not given yours to your tutor, please can you do so asap as we want to organise a small prize for the wining tutor group in each year on your return to school.

This week’s come from Mr Tucker: 1. The smell of freshly cut grass after the very first cut of the year. 2. The drawing out of the days – light in the morning and staying lighter in the evening. 3. The chance to plan for the return of school as it should be – full of students and the focus on teaching and learning. 4. Putting my sunglasses on for the first time in the year. 5. Cooking outside – the paella pan on the fire pit….. Stay safe! Best wishes from the Sixth Form team.
