Weekly Round Up 8 April 2022 - Walkerville Council
Walkerville Oval
Redevelopment coming soon!

Council is pleased to confirm the final building design for the new community hub at
Walkerville Oval has been given the tick of approval.

We have been extremely fortunate to receive $4 million State Government funding
towards the project as part of the Local Government Infrastructure Partnership
Program, meaning we are able to progress an almost 30-year vision to turn Walkerville
Oval into a modern, safe and practical space for all users.

This project is a once-in-a-generation opportunity, which would not be possible without
the government funding and therefore, it is critical Council continues to move forward
and meet deadlines for the build.

To ensure Council was successful in receiving funding, this redevelopment was
required to be an inclusive and diverse hub, involving the entirety of the community.

The current facility is old, tried and under-activated. The redevelopment will cater for
multiple and diverse users across the whole of the community.

It will allow greater participation from women’s sports, increase function opportunities
and provide a place for community gatherings, all the while creating an improved space
for current user groups.

Following your feedback during community engagement, along with various meetings
with user groups and architects Walter Brooke, the Walkerville Oval Redevelopment
Committee has been workshopping both the external and internal building designs.

At a special meeting on 28 March 2022, Elected Members discussed at length the
redevelopment and design of the building, following endorsement by the Walkerville
Oval Redevelopment Committee in February 2022.

Council has agreed to increase the building cost to $9.5 million, which will be factored
into the Capital Works program, and will now proceed to the Development Application
stage.

The Minutes of the meeting can be found by clicking here.

Council looks forward to updating you as the project progresses.

Ascot Avenue Mural Commences
Mural Mural on the wall.
As part of the “Mural Mural on the Wall” project, Council has partnered with Vale Park
Primary School and a local artist in order to both brighten a previously bland stretch
of infrastructure and combat constant vandalism.

Artist Marciano Arents has been working with students to capture their thoughts
regarding the area and has transformed their ideas into a 100m-stretch of art.

After receiving multiple complaints over several years in regards to graffiti along the
100m-stretch of Ascot Avenue, the mural aims to discourage vandals.

This project brings a sense of pride and ownership for the students who have been
involved in this venture, and fosters a link to health and wellbeing in our community.

Research has long shown that the arts offer many benefits – including health, social
and economic – which offer both private and public value.

Marciano is the creative behind Senman Creations. He is a self-taught artist
specialising in large scale murals, street art, design and canvas. He also painted the
mural in Council’s pocket reserve on the corner of North East Road and Smith Street.

For more information on Senman Creations. Please visit their website here.

For more information about the project, please contact our Assets and Infrastructure
team on 8342 7100.

Last day left to nominate for the Volunteer of the Year Awards!

Through its Volunteer Awards, the Town of Walkerville acknowledges the commitment and
contribution of local volunteers and community events. By nominating an individual, or an
event, you give recognition to the often unsung heroes in our Township. As part of the
Volunteer Awards, there is also a Mayor’s Choice Award. The Mayor's Choice Award is not

Winners of the three below categories will be announced at a special ceremony on 19 May
2022.

For exceptional voluntary service by an individual who has benefited the Town of Walkerville.
This award is only for people aged over 35 years. This award can recognise a volunteer who

Volunteer of the Year Award.
