ONLINE TRAINING & WEBINARS
 TOY (Together Young and Old) Project

As part of the Together Old and Young (TOY) project we have been working on updating the
TOY online course which promotes intergenerational learning between young children and
older adults.

We are delighted that the next course will begin on 28th February 2022 and registration is now
open - see link below and flyer attached.

The course is free, can be done in one’s own time and be completed in five weeks. It is also
possible to upgrade to receive certification.

We think the course will be of particular interest to ECE practitioners while the TOY website
could also be a useful resource.

We would really appreciate it if you would circulate the information about the course to your
networks and anyone who may be interested in intergenerational learning.

If you have any queries do not hesitate to contact me.
Many thanks and kind regards,

Anne

Treoir (The National Federation of Services for Unmarried Parents and their Children)
promotes the rights and best interests of unmarried parents and their children through
providing specialist information and advocating for their rights.
Treoir operates a free, confidential, national, specialist information service for unmarried
parents, their extended families and those working with them.
Our service is for unmarried parents, living together or apart, both opposite and same-sex.
Information on Treoir and its services is available on www.treoir.ie

Treoir has a long history of providing workshops on key issues affecting unmarried parents.
Treoir would be happy to host a workshop to staff in your organisation on significant
legislation which has radically changed family law.

The workshop will brief participants on the provisions of the Children and Family
Relationships Act 2015 which were commenced on the 18th January 2016. The provisions
relate primarily to guardianship, custody, access and maintenance. They include the
following:

 A non-marital father will automatically become the guardian of his child if he lives
with the child’s mother for at least 12 consecutive months including not less than 3
months after the child’s birth. The three months period does not have to take place
directly after the birth of the child. It can be fulfilled any time before the child turns
18 provided that it is part of the 12 consecutive months during which the parents
have lived together. Until now non-marital fathers have never been automatic
guardians of their child. The cohabitation requirement is not retrospective: only
cohabitation after the commencement date is taken into account. The Act was
commenced on the 18th January 2016.

 A person other than a parent may become a child’s guardian. It will be possible for
step-parents, grandparents and others who act in loco parentis to apply for
       guardianship.

 The Act allows relatives and certain persons to apply for custody of a child.

 Where there is a court order in place for either access or custody and the access or
custody is either unreasonably denied or not taken up, a parent/guardian of the
child may apply to the court for an Enforcement Order.

 It will be possible for a parent who is a guardian and has custody of a child to
nominate a person to act as a temporary guardian in the event of the parent

                                                                                                    6
becoming incapable of exercising the rights and responsibilities of guardianship
         through serious illness or injury.

The aim of the workshop is to provide accurate and up-to-date information on the legal
rights and responsibilities of parents who are not married to each other.

The workshop will clarify the legal situation regarding guardianship, access, custody,
maintenance, cohabiting parents, unmarried fathers, step-parents, grandparents and
relatives.

Workshops can be tailored to respond to the needs of individual groups.

CHILDREN & YOUNG PEOPLE

 EPIC (Empowering People In Care) # CareDay 22

The EPIC Youth Council and community invite you to join them on Friday 18 February for
#CareDay22 – their annual global celebration (which also happens to be the world’s largest
celebration) of children and young people with care experience.
For #CareDay22, the celebration is getting even bigger as this year’s theme is:

“It takes a village to raise a child”

It was decided by children and young people as they want to celebrate all the people who
are and have been a positive influence in their lives and to highlight how important these
relationships are in shaping their care journeys.
We all know people who’ve had an important impact on our outlook and sense of self-
worth. They can be relatives, youth workers, teachers, coaches, neighbours, or advocates –
all of whom hail from our community or “village”. We might not even realise the positive
impact we have on others. Simple acts of listening, encouraging, or understanding can have
    profound, direct, and lifelong effects.

This year we are asking you to realise your potential to be that person in a child or young
    person’s village – to be(come) a #CareAware Ally.

For #CareDay22, children and young people with care experience are asking you to stand
with them. There are a few different ways you can do this to show your support on the day:
 Share a photo of yourself (or just your hands if you are camera shy) on social media
with #CareDay22 and/or #CareAware written on the palm of your hands.
 Share a video selfie to wish children in care, those with care experience, and EPIC a very
happy care day, or any other messages of solidarity and celebration you may have.

                                                                                                 15
 Change your social media profile picture to our #CareAware graphic for the week to show
you’re standing with children and young people all over the world who have care
    experience.
When you are posting your messages of solidarity on your social channels – please use the
hashtags #CareDay22 and #CareAware – so we can keep track of all the day’s activities and
actions on our #CareDay22 Social Wall. Alternatively, you can send them to us
at participation@epiconline.ie, and we will share them on our channels on the day.
So please pop this info and the date in your diary today: Care Day 2022, Friday 18
February. We are really looking forward to you joining the celebration, as remember, “It
    takes a village”.
Note: If you work with or know children or young people in care or with care experience,
you can check out our other plans for #CarerDay22 here: News & Events | EPIC
(epiconline.ie). We have lots of activities and competitions for all ages!

                                                                                              16
