Clean Air Day - Barts Health
Clean Air day is the UK’s largest air pollution campaign and this year it takes place on 17th June 2021. Barts
Health would like schools to support the campaign by asking families to either walk or scoot to school for
clean air day on 17th June. To find out more go to the Tower Hamlets: ‘Air Pollution and You’ website for tips
and advice on how to avoid air pollution, a link is provided below. To promote this message Barts Health have
provided an example TEXT or Twitter message, that schools can send out to families:
‘You are the key to cleaner air on Clean Air Day! Switch off your engine when stopped (and it’s safe to do so)
and you’ll be playing your part by reducing emissions and creating cleaner air for everyone’

                                                                               Access the website here >

includes a Self-Validation Checklist is available to guide schools through the process. Let’s stop the ‘monster
day’s’ by making our schools Asthma/Allergy friendly and improve Asthma and Allergy Care for children in
Tower Hamlets.
If you would like any more information, support or guidance please email Tori Hadaway at

Secondary School focus group needed - Develop a Water Only Schools
Toolkit
Water is the healthiest way to stay hydrated, as well as being a no-sugar thirst quencher! However, many young
people still reach for unhealthy options, which are either high in sugar or caffeine, as well as contributing to
plastic waste. It is therefore vital that children get into the habit of making water their first choice.
Public Health England – London, in collaboration with Healthy Schools London, Greater London Authority (GLA)
and Queen Mary University of London are developing a water only schools toolkit for secondary schools.
A Primary resource has already been published on the Change4 Life website.
To ensure that the toolkit is fully inclusive, views and opinions are being sought from London's
secondary school staff via focus group sessions. Around 8-10 people will take part in each focus group, they
will last approximately 1 hour, taking place virtually via MS Teams. During the session school staff will be asked
a series of questions related to the curriculum, lifestyle choices and drinking behaviours.
If you are interested in taking part in the focus group session, to help develop a water only schools toolkit for
secondary schools, please contact Sally.hudd@phe.gov.uk for a consent form. The consent form will need to
be returned by Friday 18th June. Please also include your availability for the weeks commencing 21st June and
28th June.

First Aid Resources
When Danish Footballer Christian Eriksen collapsed during Denmark’s Euro 2020 opening fixture at the
weekend football fans across the world were left in shock, but the swift response of teammates and on pitch
CPR from the medical team resulted in Christian Eriksen’s life being saved.
Since September 2020 First Aid Education became part of the statutory RSE and Health Education curriculum.
First Aid Champions, from British Red Cross, is an educational website for 5- 18-year olds and has been
established to teach children lifesaving skills needed to save a life. The website consists of activities, films,
PowerPoint presentations, quizzes and photographs. School staff do not require any additional training prior to
delivering the lessons.

Click here to access the website >
