Medicare and Part D
How they work. And how to make them work better for you.
Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people ages 65 and older and for younger
people who qualify under special circumstances, like those with a disability. Different parts of the
Medicare program cover different costs. Part A is hospital insurance and includes inpatient stays,
skilled nursing and home health care. Part B is medical insurance for doctor services, lab tests,
outpatient care and preventive care. Part D is prescription drug insurance to help you manage
your prescription drug costs.

When can I enroll in Medicare Part D?
       INITIAL ENROLLMENT PERIOD
TURNING 65: You’re eligible to enroll in Medicare because you’re turning age 65.
You have a seven-month enrollment window that opens three months before your
birthday month and closes three months after your birthday month.1
DISABLED: If you’re under 65, you’re eligible to enroll in Medicare if you have
a qualifying disability. You have a seven-month enrollment window that opens
three months before your 25th month of receiving Social Security or Railroad
Retirement Board benefits and ends three months after.

                                                  OR

       ANNUAL ENROLLMENT PERIOD
You want to enroll in Medicare Part D or change your existing coverage. It
happens each year between October 15 and December 7.

                                                  OR

       SPECIAL ENROLLMENT PERIOD
You need to change coverage due to a special circumstance, like moving to a new
home in another state. It can happen any time of the year. Call us for more details.

PLEASE NOTE: MEDICARE PART D HAS A LATE ENROLLMENT PENALTY
You may have to pay this penalty if, at any time after your Initial Enrollment Period
is over, you go without Medicare Part D (or other creditable prescription drug
coverage) for 63 or more days in a row. Medicare will add the penalty amount to
your monthly premium once you enroll in a Part D plan.
