Getting ready for AS German We are very pleased to welcome you to the AS German course. There is a natural progression from GCSE to AS Level and many of the AS topics build upon your GCSE knowledge. Language skills need to be practised – if you don’t use it, you lose it! It is very important that you don’t forget everything you’ve learnt over the summer!! In order to be fully prepared for September, please work through the tasks in the booklet. Some of the tasks are designed to revise GCSE topics which will form the basis of AS topics. There are also grammar tasks and some activities to help you to develop your cultural awareness. • Try to do something most days and certainly, at least 1 hour per week on average • Do not leave it until the last minute Please keep all of your GCSE exercise books and notes. Getting organised for AS Please get equipped with the following before September • A ring binder • Subject dividers: one for each topic area, a grammar section, written tasks and essays/articles/authentic sources/independent work. Plastic wallets will also be useful to help to get you organised. • A good German dictionary (eg an Oxford-Duden Dictionary) • Stationary: pens, pencils and highlighter pens
Task 1 – Check you can use a range of verbs in different tenses. Fill in the gaps in the verb tables! “haben”, “sein” and “werden” are particularly important, as they are the building blocks for other tenses. Make sure you remember the meaning of each of the subjects as well. Task 2 – Write 100-150 words in German about your family. Try to use lots of the sophisticated and clever structures you learnt for GCSE. Can you give examples, vary your opinions with reasons why?
Task 3 – Vocabulary Brainstorms: Write lots of words and phrases for each of these topics (they are all AS topics and you will know plenty of vocabulary from GCSE!) Fernsehen Musik das Internet
Task 4 – Revise opinion phrases – how many of these do you know? Meiner Meinung nach ….. In my opinion…. Ich bin der Meinung, dass I am of the opinion that …..gefällt mir (nicht). Task 5 – Read an article from a German newspaper or website Choose a topic that interests you (e.g. a film or sport you like) Here are some useful websites for some German: https://www.dw.com/de/deutsch-lernen/deutsch-aktuell/s-2146 https://www.goethe.de/de/index.html https://www.deutsch-perfekt.com/ (There are lots of articles available without needing to sign up. There are also interesting podcasts and language and grammar exercises/ information) https://www.quarks.de/ Don’t expect to understand every word. You might only recognise a few words or sentences. It doesn’t matter as you are still developing your language skills. Interesting words/phrases Worum handelt es sich? What is it about ?
Task 6 – Watch the German news (via the internet) Try to get the gist of what is being said. You won’t understand everyone – don’t worry. It’s very fast! Task 7 – Practise your German grammar online. Check you are happy with everything you learnt for GCSE. Watch Goodbye Lenin This is the film which you will study on the course and will form part of your writing exam. Find some other interesting Films and Series You can download these and watch them online (YouTube/ Amazon/ Netflix etc). 4OD (Channel 4 streaming service) has the “Walter Presents” service for foreign films and TV series. BBC4 and Film 4 also sometimes show German films and television series – so keep an eye on the TV schedules. You could also rent films from your local library. There are far too many good films to choose from, it really depends what genre of film you enjoy. You could also watch British or American DVDs or streamed films with German dubbing track or subtitles on. Just change the audio or subtitles in your settings when you are using a streaming service or on the DVD menu. Make sure the film or series you choose is suitable for your age before you watch! Check the age ratings and consult with your parent/guardian.
Task 9 – Complete the following ‘diary’ in German for each week of the summer holidays. What did you do? Why? What was your opinion? It doesn’t matter how uninteresting the week was, find something impressive to write in the past in German. Was hast du gemacht? – What did you do? Woche 1 Woche 2 Woche 3 Woche 4 Woche 5 Woche 6
