BCOA Bulletin (OCT/NOV/DEC 2015) 13FROM THE PRESIDENT
BCOA is preparing to move further into electronic media as a part of the day-to-day
operation of the club. New changes to the bylaws will allow voting on modifications to
the standard and voting for Board of Directors/officers via electronic balloting. This will
not only streamline and lessen the time involved in producing mailings, but will be a
substantial savings in terms of postage and printing. As soon as the final approval from
AKC is received, electronic voting can be used to decide less critical issues as a way of
selecting tools and validating the process. Voting for national specialty sites and judges
could be an initial way to evaluate electronic voting procedures.
Social media usage over the last several years has enhanced our ability to communicate
with the membership and provide information to the public about the nature of basenjis.
Also, there is an ongoing review of all the BCOA publications to determine how best to
utilize electronic media in the future. Only about three percent of our membership still
chooses to receive the Bulletin Board on paper. The membership may be asked for their
opinions with regard to the possible use of electronic media to supplement or replace some
other printed materials as well.
As other organizations (AKC and OFA, for instance) that are a part of the fancy
incorporate electronic media as a cost-saving tool, the BCOA is experiencing the same
pressures of increasing cost for postage and printing. One change that has taken place
without much notice is the degree to which our National Specialty event has eliminated
cost by delivering, via email, the premium list, schedules, and flyers. I’m sure that in
the coming years the process of producing and managing dog events can be made less
expensive through the use of electronic media and computer tools.
As this will be my last note to the membership as president of the BCOA, I look forward to
a seamless transition to the new board with some changes of officers and directors. While
different people will bring fresh perspectives and skills to the board I hope Kim Brown will
continue to contribute and it will be difficult to replace Lisa Auerbach and Pam Geoffroy
and all they have done for the BCOA over many years. However, I’m confident they will
both make available their talents and expertise.
