 Message from the Superintendent...

Dear Candor Families, Faculty and Staff,
First and foremost, I want to say thank you for the warm welcome that I received in my first months
serving as your Superintendent. The support that this community shows for its schools is truly
outstanding. I know that I speak for the entire faculty and staff when I say we sincerely appreciate
the trust that you put in us to educate and care for your children. It is not a responsibility that we
 take lightly.
As we moved into the start of the 2021-2022 school year, we were hopeful that this year would essen-
tially be a “typical” year, with the exception of having to wear masks for a time. As is often the case in
life, what we hoped for and what we got aren’t exactly the same. Our schools continue to be placed in
the difficult position of being caught between mandates and health and safety guidelines and what
families want for their children. This pandemic and all of the baggage that came with it has hit each
of us hard over the last year and a half. Sometimes it feels like we have been dealing with this for
decades. We understand that it can be exhausting. Still, our students, staff, and community continue
to show tremendous strength and resolve. Candor Central School continues to provide a caring envi-
ronment where our students are empowered through education to become their best selves. Our stu-
dents continue to show a great deal of adaptability and understanding. This pandemic will come un-
der control, and the current “new normal” will give way to a better new normal that more closely re-
sembles the way things used to be. When we get there, our children, our schools, and our community
will be stronger as a result of how we worked together to beat the issues we are facing now. In the
meantime, we continue to encourage members of our school community to get vaccinated, if their be-
lief allows, in order to keep themselves and those around them safe.
Thank you again for your continued support of our students and staff. It is because of your support
that we have been able to minimize the negative impact of the pandemic and continue to focus on the
education of our students. Candor is a great place to be!

 Respectfully,
 Brent Suddaby

                                        HIGH SCHOOL NEWS

Message from the Jr/Sr High School Principal...
It’s hard to believe we are over 10 weeks into the school year! It has been wonderful to have students
back full days, five days a week. As some of you may know, we have developed a new program in the
building called Crew. We have implemented Crew into the schedule one day each week. Below is
 some details pertaining to crew:
 What is Crew:
Crew is a program in which students meet regularly with a caring faculty member during a scheduled
 period in the school day.
What is the goal of Crew:
The underlying goal is to provide each student with consistent support and guidance from a member
 of the school staff.
 What is done in Crew:
The adult, called the Crew Leader, advocates for his/her group of students and runs the activities of
the Crew program. These activities run from facilitation of a discussion to the distribution of
important school information. This is also one avenue to implement Social-Emotional Learning
 (sometimes simply called “SEL”).

                                   WHY IS CREW SO IMPORTANT?

        *       Positive relationships are created
        * Crews help to build a sense of community in schools, which is important for preventing
                alienation.
        * Studies have shown that students’ educational success is based on academics as well as
                social emotional support.
Rose Burkhardt, the former president of the National Middle School Association, wrote in her article
 Advisory for Every Student:
“If teachers expect students to be engaged learners, they must communicate to those students
that they are cared for, respected, welcomed, and appreciated. Young adolescents need
affirmation. They need support. They need to know that those who are charged with
educating them are also concerned about them. “
Crew Leaders benefit from this program as much as students do. Educators work hard every day to
make a difference in students’ lives. The Crew program provides school personnel with another
opportunity to get to know students well and help them in a significant and meaningful way.
If you have further questions regarding Crew, please reach out to me or Mrs. Gance-Virkler, School
 Counselor at (607)659-3195.
Have a wonderful holiday season, and please contact me if I can
assist your child in any way!

                                  ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEWS

Message from the Elementary School Principal...
 Dear Candor Community,

The school year continues to run fairly smoothly. We have already accomplished so much in what
feels like a much more typical school year. It is hard to believe that December 3rd will mark the end
of the first marking period. The Elementary School’s marking periods are broken into trimesters and
each one consists of about 13 weeks of instruction.
Our teachers continue to show a great deal of dedication to implementing the new ELA curriculums
(Superkids and Side By Side) with fidelity. Our students also continue to work extremely hard and
are doing well with meeting the high expectations of the new programs. We are very proud of all we
have accomplished up to this point and we look forward to reviewing student progress at the end of
the first marking period and during Parent/Teacher Conferences on December 10th! (We will offer
both virtual and in-person conferences this year.)
It was wonderful to bring back our annual Open House event this year. We held an Open House on
October 5th and we had a great turnout. It was nice to see students proudly lead their families
through the building. We are equally excited to reintroduce field trips this year! Field trips will start
taking place as early as this Winter and continue through the Spring months. All field trips will be
connected to grade level standards and content.
We are so excited to share that the Book Fair is returning to Candor Elementary School in December!
Be sure to check out the link in the newsletter and watch for more information from Mrs.
 Bruttomesso.
As always, feel free to reach out if there is anything I can do to support our students or families.
Thank you for the continued support. I feel extremely lucky to be a part of this wonderful community!
We all wish you a happy, safe and relaxing Thanksgiving Break with your friends and family!

 Sincerely,
 Mrs. Volpicelli

                                         ATHLETICS NEWS

 Hello Candor Families,
We are extremely excited about the fact that each of our fall teams were able to play a complete
schedule for the first time since March of 2020! Our winter sports are slated to begin on November
15th and we anticipate participating in another full season! Our students, staff, coaches and parents
continue working extremely hard to mitigate risks that could potentially impact everyone’s season-
thank you all for your efforts.
Looking back at our fall season I’d like to take a moment to thank all of the spectators for coming out
to support our athletes in a positive manner. Additionally, I’d like to express my gratitude to the
Booster Club for the numerous donations to our programs and their continued hard work in providing
our spectators with a great game experience. Mrs. Z and the cross country program would also like to
thank the Catatonk Golf Course and Event Center for hosting our Senior Night and maintaining the
cross country course for the event.
I am beyond proud of our student athletes and coaches for the numerous opportunities they took to
serve and engage the Candor community in meaningful ways over the past few weeks. Our boys soccer
team handed out Halloween candy to trick-or-treaters at the high school, our volleyball teams hosted a
Dig Pink game raising awareness for cancer and our boys basketball program volunteered at a local
church to support their efforts in providing one thousand free meals to our community!
Our teams experienced much success this fall with several postseason appearances. Cross country
earned a trip to sectionals and boys soccer fought hard to get to the IAC finals. As I write this
newsletter our varsity volleyball team is preparing for a regional finals game after claiming the
Section IV, Class D championship! Additionally, our football program will be playing for the Section
IV, 8 man championship in the coming days. The programs that did not experience as much of the
success in the “win” column worked extremely hard, acquired additional skills and fought their hearts
out to compete and grow as individuals.

I’d like to take a moment and remind everyone to visit our athletic website where you can find our
new spectator policy posted, view our spectator protocols, check out photos of our contests or listen to
our most recent Athlete of the Week, Shelby Swartz’s interview from ESPN Ithaca!
We were hopeful to get back to normalcy with spectators at full capacity this winter however, in an
effort to responsibly host sporting events indoors this coming season we ask that spectators follow the
recommendations on the following page when attending a sporting event at Candor High School.
We look forward to all fifteen teams getting off to a great start for the winter season in a few short
days! As always, thank you all for your support of the student athletes, coaches and teachers.

More and more, our drivers are being passed when the RED lights are on, and the bus is
stopped. This is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS and HIGHLY ILLEGAL.

Reminders to all families - New York State Recommended Loading Procedures:
• All students should arrive at least 5 minutes early at the bus stop.
• Students should wait at least 15 feet from the road.
• When students see the bus, they should form a single line.
• Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop.
• Load in an orderly manner.
• Students must sit in their assigned seat. Each bus has students assigned to seats (one per seat or
3 in a seat if family), and attendance is taken daily for COVID tracing.
• Classroom behavior is school bus behavior. All students are expected to sit in their seat with
hands, feet, and all belongings out of the aisle and kept to themselves.
Reminders to parents:
• Please confirm the pickup time at the bus stop.
• Please have your child at the bus stop at least 5 minutes before the bus arrives.
• Please dress your children appropriately for the weather, just in case the bus is delayed.
• Wear bright-colored clothing whenever possible so children can be visible to all motorists.
• Supervision at the bus stop can prevent injuries and danger. Please supervise your children.
If you are trying to reach the bus garage (607-659-3115) and are only able to get the voicemail, please
either call the Elementary School (607-659-3935) or the High School (607-659-5020) as we are likely
out on the road transporting students.
Please help us keep our students safe!

Junior High Spanish is off to a running start in the 2021-2022 school year!

Candor Junior High Spanish students are decorating a Peruvian-
themed Christmas tree with ornaments they are making by hand.
The tree will be donated to the Everson Museum in Syracuse for
their annual Festival of Trees. Stanley Winnick and Zoe Travis
set up the tree all on their own. Carson Hatch is painting clay
beads to hang on the tree. Makenna Nixon and Calli Marsh are
painting dried gourds, which are traditional Peruvian decorations.
Emma Veasy is cutting cotton to attach to the llamas to make
 them fluffy.

Movement and teamwork are priorities. Here students Kobe Foster, Logan Aman, Nicola Soper, Callie
Deming, Tracy Reynolds, and Kamren Westbrook work in teams to rewrite and illustrate a story.

Spanish students prepared traditional Mexican dishes atole (a
hot corn-based beverage) and sopa de tortilla. Abby Orendorff,

a rehydrated chile pepper while Hazel Ray, Robert Burkleo,
and Rylan Cruz help with other preparations. The soup was
topped with cilantro, avocado, lime, queso fresco, sour cream,
                                       and fried tortilla strips.

7th grade Spanish students prepared champurrado (a chocolate flavored variation on atole)
and churros (a fried pastry). Stanley Winnick uses an authentic molinillo to stir the
champurrado. Carson Hatch is frying the churros. Dominic Classen pours the chopped
chocolate into the champurrado, while Nathan Crawford stirs and Eithen Ingandello
supervises. Malley Heidl and Leia Bostwick fry churros in the kitchen.

The current NHS members completed their annual road side clean up this fall. We also will provide
