Name tags:

         • Prepare name tags for confirmandi.
⧫ First line, in bold, one inch letters – the name by which the confirmand will be
called when he/she is confirmed. The name should be typed, not hand written.
⧫ If including other names (surnames, etc) please place them at the bottom of
the name tag, and in small font size.
         • Please instruct the confirmandi to wear the name tag on their left shoulder.
         • Please note that the name tags must be worn even if the young person is wearing
a sash with their name on it.
         • Your careful preparation of the name tags is much appreciated as it provides a
consistent means for the confirming Bishop to easily read the name of the young
             person.
Stoles
         • The use of the stole is reserved for those who are ordained. Therefore, we ask
that stoles not be work by confirmandi at the Confirmation Mass.

Confirmation Mass Preparation:

         • Please practice the Confirmation ritual responses:
⧫ Page F of this booklet.
⧫ Review in particular the confirmand’s response when they are anointed.
         • Communion under both forms:
⧫ Communion is distributed under both forms at the Confirmation Mass

Parish Ceremony:

         • You are strongly encouraged to have a sending ceremony a week or two before
the Confirmation celebration or a receiving ceremony a week or two after at the
parish. A copy of the ceremony is included in this packet.

Banners (Cathedral only):

         • Due to the size of the Cathedral, a banner may be used to designate your
reserved seating area. Please note: Parishes are required to provide any
materials needed for their banner which includes stands, etc.

Parking:
      • Parking can be difficult; some advance planning can greatly assist the process:
⧫ Please consider car-pooling with family members and/or members of your
           Parish.
⧫ It may help if you drop off passengers first, and then park.
⧫ Please consult Page D for instructions

When to arrive:
     • Please plan on arriving early; thirst minutes to one hour prior to the
         Confirmation Mass.
⧫ Because other events could be scheduled earlier on the day of Confirmation,
please do not arrive more than one hour before Mass.

Where to sit:
     • The confirmation Coordinator at your parish may have your seats pre-assigned.
⧫ Reserved seating is for candidates and sponsors. Everyone else may sit in
in areas that are not reserved.
⧫ When arriving at the church, you will find maps posted at the entrances,
indicating where your parish is seated.
⧫ More guests are welcome; they may sit in the sections not assigned to
              parishes.

Appropriate attire:
     • This is a sacred occasion – please dress in your “Sunday best.” It is strongly
suggested that male candidates wear at least a tie along with a collared shirt,
dress pants and formal shoes. Women should be dressed in a respectful manner.
⧫ There should be NO gum chewing during the Confirmation Mass.
⧫ Those serving in liturgical role, Reader, Extraordinary Minister of Holy
Communion, Greeters, should also dress in their “Sunday best.”

Photographs:
      • Photography and/or videotaping are not permitted during the Confirmation
          Mass.
      • Due to the relatively short time available after the Mass, it is not possible to stage
          a professional photograph.
      • Family and friends will have an opportunity to take a parish group photo
          immediately following the Confirmation Mass.

Page C: Choosing a Confirmation Name

                             Your confirmation Name
The Most Reverend John C. Nienstedt

All of us need heroes! Whether it is in the area of athletics, or science, or politics, or even
parenting (maybe especially parenting), all of us need role models that we can look up to
and emulate.

As I was growing up, I frequently experienced attacks of asthma that would induce
bronchitis and put me in bed for a week or so. My parents did not allow us kids to watch
television, so I read books. Most frequently I read books on the lives of the saints. They
became my heroes.

The late Archbishop Fulton J Sheen once said, “The church’s job is to make saints, and she is
at her best when she gives them to us.” Many people today, living amidst the secularism,
materialism and hedonism of our times, question whether it’s really possible to live a
virtuous and holy life. Some think that Jesus held up for us a theoretically high ideal which
none of us can attain. But after reading the lives of the saints and the flesh-and-blood
circumstances in which they lived and died, you cannot fail but know that the ideals to
which Jesus calls us are real and attainable. They are because others, like ourselves, have
been there and done it!

It is my wish that each Confirmation candidate will choose the name of a real,
legitimate saint who is well known to that individual. It may be the saint of one’s
baptismal designation, or the saint’s name your parents or grandparents carry, or a saint
whose life you have read and whose example you wish to follow. But the name you choose
should link you with the communion of saints in heaven with whom we worship God, the
Father, every time we participate in the Mass.

If you are trying to find the right saint for you, the list provided will give you a good start
(see document “Saints of the Church” on website). Other saints are found in Our Sunday
Visitor’s Encyclopedia of Saints, revised by Matthew, Margaret and Stephen Bunsen in
2003. A copy of this is available in the Archdiocesan Office of Worship.

Most internet websites provide incorrect or inadequate information about the saints. Be
careful about the information you collect.

Choosing a name for Confirmation is an important step in the process of preparation. I ask
each candidate to pray, study, and choose a saint in whom he or she can place their
confidence not just for today, but for many years to come.

God bless you!
                                                      C

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Ezekiel

Thus says the Lord God:

I will take you away from among the nations,
gather you from all the foreign lands,
and bring you back to your own land.

I will sprinkle clean water upon you
to cleanse you from all your impurities,
and from all your idols I will cleanse you.

I will give you a new heart and place a new Spirit within you,
taking from your bodies your stony hearts
         and giving you natural hearts.

I will put my Spirit within you and make you live by my statutes,
        careful to observe my decrees.

You shall live in the land I gave your fathers;
you shall be my people, and I will be your God.

The Word of the Lord

                                                                                                                     Ezekiel: 36:24-28

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles

When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled,
they were all in one place together.
And suddenly there came from the sky
a noise like a strong driving wind,
and it filled the entire house in which they were.
Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire,
which parted and came to rest on each one of them.

Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem.
At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd,
        but they were confused
because each one heard them speaking in his own language.

Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and proclaimed to them:
“You who are Jews, indeed all of you staying in Jerusalem.
Let this be known to you, and listen to my words.”

“Jesus the Nazorean was a man commended to you by God
with mighty deeds, wonders, and signs,
which God worked through him in your midst,
        as you yourselves know.
This man, delivered up by the set plan and foreknowledge of God,
you killed, using lawless men to crucify him.

God raised this Jesus;
of this we are all witnesses.
Exalted at the right hand of God,
he received the promise of the Holy Spirit from the Father
and poured it forth, as you both see and hear.”

The Word of the Lord

                                                                                       Acts 2:1-6, 14, 22b-23, 32-33

A reading from the holy gospel according to John

After Jesus had revealed himself to his disciples and eaten breakfast with them
        he said to Simon Peter,
“Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?”
Simon Peter answered him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”
Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.”

He then said to Simon Peter a second time,
“Simon, son of John, do you love me?”
Simon Peter answered him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”
He said to him, “Tend my sheep.”

He said to him the third time,
“Simon, son of John, do you love me?”
Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time,
“Do you love me?” and he said to him,
“Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.”
Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.
Amen, amen, I say to you, when you were younger,
       you used to dress yourself and go where you wanted;
but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands,
and someone else will dress you
and lead you where you do not want to go.”

He said this signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God.

And when he had said this, he said to him,
      “Follow me.”

Page G: Frequently Asked Questions

Who can I contact with changes/questions?
     • Please call 651-251-7727 or email irwinl@archspm.org

I have a confirmand who cannot make our assigned date. What can I do?
       • In the rare event that a confirmand is unable to attend your assigned date,
please contact a parish to inquire about the possibility of the confirmand
          joining their assigned date.
⧫ These arrangements are to be made at the parish level by the Confirmation
Coordinator. A Master List of Confirmation dates will be sent to the
coordinator during the summer. Once arrangements have been made,
contact the Office of Worship with the information.
⧫ The confirmand should be instructed to stand with the parish he/she has
joined for the Confirmation Mass during the “Presentation of Candidates.”

Where should the sacramental record of the Confirmation be recorded?
     • Once a person is baptized, the record of all other sacraments must be recorded
in the Church where the person was baptized.

      • If your parish has a confirmation register, you should record the confirmations
of anyone prepared through the parish, noting the location where the Sacrament
was conferred (i.e. Cathedral of Saint Paul)

          In addition:
⧫ If the confirmand was baptized in your parish, the Confirmation is recorded
in the Baptismal register held at your parish.
⧫ If the young person was baptized at another parish, your parish issues a
“Notice of Confirmation” to the parish of baptism.

I am making Confirmation certificates for my candidates; how do I identify the
confirming bishop?
      • You can call the Office of Worship, no more than two weeks before Confirmation,
to get the name of the confirming bishop.

Lost and Found?
      • Contact the Cathedral directly: 651-228-1766

Presider:
After the homily, the Presider addresses the congregation in these or similar words:

Our candidates (will be/have been) confirmed at the Cathedral of Saint Paul by
our bishop. Joining with them (are/were) many of the young people of the
Archdiocese. We do not want them to forget, however, that this sacrament
connects them more closely with our own parish, and that they receive it
surrounded by our prayers. We wish to recognize them today, and ask God’s
blessings for them.

The Presider asks the parents to stand.

Dear Parents: (today you present your child/you have presented your child) for
the sacrament of Confirmation. Your Christ like life is the first witness they have
encountered. We thank you for your love and patience as your child has grown
in he/her faith. During your child’s confirmation preparation, they selected a
sponsor to walk with them during their faith journey, to continue the work you
have begun. This is a special time whereby you hand your child over to another
to walk with them in faith. We thank you for that trust.

Sponsors are asked to stand (parents remain standing)
Dear Sponsors: (Soon you will journey/You have journeyed) to the Cathedral of
Saint Paul to present your candidate to be confirmed. You have assumed the
role of spiritual friend as they have prepared to receive the sacrament of
confirmation. You were chosen because of the way you have modeled the
Christian life. The parents have entrusted their child to you and our parish
supports you and your candidate with our love and prayers. Thank you for your
witness to the Christian life.

To everyone present:
Let us show these parents and sponsors a sign of our gratitude.

          Applause

Parents and sponsors are seated

Deacon/Confirmation Coordinator:

Let those who (will be/have been) confirmed stand when their names are called.

The names are then called individually

Presider:

You (are about to be/have just been) confirmed. That sacrament binds you more
closely to the whole Church, symbolized both by the confirming bishop and the
place of the life of the sacrament. It also binds you more closely to our own
parish, where the life of the whole Church is shown forth to our neighbors and
friends. As you (go to/return from) the celebration of the sacrament, know that
our prayers and hopes accompany you. We ask God to join you more fully to our
shared Gospel work.

Bear witness now to the faith which this sacrament deepens by professing your
faith. Please respond to each question by saying, “I do.”

Presider:
Do you reject Satan and all his works and all his empty promises?
          I do

Presider:
Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was born of the Virgin
Mary, was crucified, died and was buried, rose from the dead, and is now seated
at the right hand of the Father?
           I do

Presider:
Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who came upon the
apostles at Pentecost and (will be given/ was given) to you sacramentally in
confirmation?
           I do

Presider:
Do you believe in the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the
forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the left everlasting?
          I do

The Presider confirms their profession of faith by proclaiming the faith of the
Church.

Presider:
This is our faith. This is the faith of the Church. We are proud to profess it in
Christ Jesus our Lord.

            AMEN
Presider:
Your parish prays that God’s grace accompany you in all things. Bow your heads
and pray for God’s blessing:

God of heaven and earth, complete the work you have begun and keep the gifts
of your Holy Spirit alive in the hearts of your people. May they become Christ’s
witnesses in the world, spreading and defending the faith. This we ask through
Christ our Lord.

           AMEN

The Presider then invites the congregation to show their support for the young
people with their applause!

At the Prayer of the Faithful, the following petitions may be added:

For these sons and daughters of God, (who are about to be/have been)
confirmed by the gift of the Spirit, that they give witness to Christ by lives built
on faith and love: let us pray to the Lord

For their parents and sponsors who led them in faith, that by work and example
they may always encourage them to follow the way of Jesus Christ: let us pray to
the Lord.
