What is Rural in Colorado?
TYPHON Creating Innovation and Efficiency - University of Colorado
Understanding Rural
According to the American Community
Survey, Rural Colorado Consists of:
• 10% poverty rate
• 11% have not completed high school
• 5.2% Unemployment rate
• Colorado covers 103,718 sq mi with a 2014
  estimated population of 5,355,866 people-
689,445 living in rural Colorado (13% of
  the population)

Rural Healthcare in Colorado
• There are just over 80 hospitals in
  Colorado
• Half are located in rural areas
• Over 50 rural health clinics in Colorado
• 15 federally qualified health centers in
  the state
• Rural per capita income is
  approximately $43,360

Why Rural Student Placements are So
            Important
• Severe shortage of health preceptors in
  Colorado especially in rural and
  underserved areas
• This shortage is hurting the states
  pipeline of qualified healthcare workers
• It is vital to the well-being, quality of life
and economic development of the entire
  state that excellent healthcare be
  available in all regions

Why Rural Student Placements are So
            Important
• Studies have shown that when a
  student receives training in rural
  and underserved areas, they are
  more likely to practice there
• Training the next generation of
students to treat the most neglected
in our society, is an important step
  in tackling our health professional
  shortage problem

Why Rural Student Placements are So
            Important
• Recruiting Healthcare providers to rural
locations is a challenge for every state
• Only 11.4% of all physicians in the U.S.
practice in rural, despite rural making
  up 20% of the population
• Rural placements are essential to
providing our nursing students a well-
  rounded, diversified education.
The number of students
interested in rural practice, far
   out weighs the number of
 preceptors in these locations.

How do we offset this gap?

What is Typhon?
• Has the potential to function as a:
  – complete electronic student tracking system
  – comprehensive patient encounter logs and
    reports
  – evaluation and survey component for
    assessment
  – student and preceptor biographic databases
  – clinical site database
  – curriculum mapping
  – secure document management
Improvement and Enhancements to
     Placement Performance and
            Operations
• Typhon has been at the college for years,
but under utilized and inconsistent with
  the rural placement option.
• By determining if a site is considered
  rural (determined by AHEC), and
marking the "rural" box, we can
  adequately and efficiently run reports
and place students at rural sites.
AHEC
    Area Health Education Center
• Increase access to health education for
community residents in rural and urban
  medically underserved areas in Colorado
  AHEC regions.
• Positively impacts the healthcare
  pipeline by supplying more rural
primary care providers to rural Colorado
Rural Colorado Zip Codes
Implementation Status
• Reviewed, processed, and completed
over 1,000 clinical sites and determined
  if they are rural.
• We are able to run reports on rural sites,
and use them for grants and research.
• We plan to use this list, to reach out to
those rural sites, where we have not
placed a student recently, and re-
  establish those connections.

Creating Efficiencies

We will continue to update rural sites as
we add them to Typhon.

Typhon at CU College of Nursing
• Under-utilized, creating inefficiencies in
  placement and tracking
• Typhon costs $250 a year compared to
eClinicalworks at $449 a month or Care Cloud at
  $349 a month
• Cost efficiency savings - using a system already in
place has the potential to streamline the GPO
work and aid in placing our students in rural sites
  more frequently
• Helps the university both in budget and
  community partnership
How does this impact the University?

           CU Strategic Priority #5
To enhance diversity, university wide and to foster
             a culture of inclusion.
• Re-build lost rural connections
• Have our students in rural locations promoting
  CU
• With the health shortage in Colorado, specifically
the rural and underserved, by having our
students in these areas, will bring excellent
health care, and provide the necessary health care
  assistance needed in these areas.
How does this impact the University?
• This will possibly impact the healthcare
workforce by supplying more CU Graduates to
these areas, once licensed, and wanting to go
back to where they were mentored.
• Build on meaningful relationships within the
  underserved, underrepresented, and rural
  communities.
• Broader picture = successful recruitment and
retention strategies. Will help address the
shortage of APNs in the rural and remote areas
  in the state of Colorado.
Next Steps (for next year’s award)
• Letter to Alumni
• Accreditation
  – EBI Assessment Surveys to Alumni
    • American Association of the Colleges of Nursing
      (AACN)
  – Improve curriculum
• Grant and Research Data
Revenue Generation
• Marketing CU Denver to all of Colorado
  – non-Urban sites
• Introduces rural preceptors to our
  services and educational offerings
Inspiring Colleagues
• Inspire co-workers to take a new look at
how their departments work with the
  systems already in place
• Training other Typhon users of the
  benefits (run reports, categorize…)
