UPCOMING EVENTS
The Easter Octave
Easter is a celebration lasting over the course of 8
days. This isn’t a random number, but refers back
to Scripture: The story of Creation in Genesis de-
scribes each phase of Creation as the First Day, Sec-
ond Day, etc., concluding with the Seventh Day, on
which Creation was complete, and God rested. But
on the first day of the week, that is, the eighth day,
Christ rose from the dead; the eighth day or
“octave” is therefore the day of New Creation, and
special feasts of the Church (like Easter) are cele-
brated for a period of eight days, or an “octave”.
· Attend daily Mass: the Church celebrates each
day of the Easter Octave like a “little Easter”
· Read the Daily Readings if you can’t make it
to Mass; they unfold the story of the Resurrec-
tion and Jesus’ appearances to the Holy Women
and Disciples.
Did you know? Baptismal fonts (including the font
here at St. Philip’s) are often eight-sided, reminding
us of our entrance through Baptism into the renewal
of creation accomplished by Christ.
