WELCOME TO ST PAUL’S CATHEDRAL
Today forty women and men are ordained to serve as deacons in the
Church of God here at St Paul’s Cathedral. All Christians are called to
serve Christ as they live their daily lives. Deacons are called to serve in a
particular way, exercising the ministry of ‘diakonia’ – servanthood.
We are a Christian church within the Anglican tradition (Church of
England) and we welcome people of all Christian traditions as well as
people of other faiths and people of little or no faith. Christian worship has
been offered to God here for over 1400 years. By worshipping with us
today, you become part of that living tradition. Our regular worshippers,
supported by members of staff and a large number of volunteers, make up
the cathedral community.
We are committed to the diversity, equal opportunities and personal and
spiritual development of all who work and worship here because we are
followers of Jesus Christ. We use sustainably sourced communion wine at
all celebrations of the Eucharist, and this order of service is printed on
recyclable paper. Thank you for being with us today. If you need any help,
please ask a member of staff. Please be assured of our continuing prayers
for you when you go back to your homes and places of worship.

As you prepare for worship, please be sensitive to the needs of those around
you who may wish to pray quietly. Please switch off mobile telephones and
do not use photographic or audio recording equipment at any time. This
service is live-streamed with special thanks to Infinity Technical and Production
Services Ltd.

The Structure of the Ordination Service

                                     Presentation of the Ordinands

The Ordinands are called to stand before the people who have supported
them in the discernment of their vocations. The Archdeacons present the
Ordinands and the people give their assent to the Ordinands being
ordained.

                                                  Liturgy of the Word

During the Liturgy of the Word, there is a reading from the Old Testament,
and the Gospel is proclaimed. A sermon is preached which encourages the
Ordinands as they take on their new ministry, and encourages those
supporting them.

                                                                  Prayers

A Litany is recited prior to the Prayer of Ordination, this acknowledges the
work of God’s grace in the Church, the world and in our lives, and gives
opportunity for us to intercede for the same.

                                                 Prayer of Ordination

During the Prayer of Ordination, the Bishop recalls the servanthood of
Christ and gives thanks that God calls women and men to the sacred
ministry. The Bishop lays hands on each Ordinand to invoke the Holy Spirit
to equip them for ministry. This laying-on of hands is the principal
ritual act at an ordination.

Giving of the Symbols of Ministry

Immediately after the Bishop has prayed for the Ordinands, they are
vested in a white stole. At the end of the service, they are given the New
Testament. Deacons are called to witness to the good news of Christ as
proclaimed in the Gospel and expounded in the teaching of the New
Testament.

                                                                           3
Prior to their ordination, the Ordinands were on retreat at the Royal
Foundation of St Katharine where the retreat conductor was the Reverend
Canon Tricia Hillas, Chaplain to the Speaker of the House of Commons, and
Canon of Westminster, and the Chaplain was the Reverend Paul Hullyer,
Vicar, St John, Pinner.

The context of Ordination services is always the Eucharist, the Lord’s
Supper, Holy Communion, the Mass, as we share this sacramental mystery
together.

                                                                       Ordinands

ORDER OF SERVICE
The congregation is asked to join in all texts printed in bold.

At 4.50 pm, the Area Directors of Ordinands, the Archdeacons, and the Bishop of
Fulham proceed to their places under the Dome.

As a fanfare is played, stand and turn to face the west end of the Cathedral as
the Ordinands, the Retreat Conductor, the Diocesan Director of Ministry, Area
Bishops, Bishop Suffragan, Sacred Ministers, and the Bishop of London enter
through the Great West Door.

                                                                  The Greeting

The Bishop says
Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.

There is one body and one spirit.
There is one hope to which we were called;

One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
one God and Father of all.

Peace be with you
and also with you.

The Bishop welcomes the congregation and introduces the service.

God calls his people to follow Christ, and forms us into a royal priesthood,
a holy nation, to declare the wonderful deeds of him who has called us out
of darkness into his marvellous light.

The Church is the Body of Christ, the people of God and the dwelling-place
of the Holy Spirit. In baptism the whole Church is summoned to witness
to God’s love and to work for the coming of his kingdom.

To serve this royal priesthood, God has given a variety of ministries.
Deacons are ordained so that the people of God may be better equipped
to make Christ known. Theirs is a life of visible self-giving. Christ is the
pattern of their calling and their commission; as he washed the feet of his
disciples, so they must wash the feet of others.

                                                        The Presentation
The Archdeacon of Charing Cross says to the Bishop
Bishop Sarah, we present these persons to be ordained to the office of
deacon in the Church of God.

The Archdeacons present each Ordinand by name, stating the places where they
are to serve.

When named, each Ordinand steps forward.

When the Ordinands have been presented, the Bishop asks these questions, to
which the Area Directors of Ordinands respond.
Have you whose duty it is to know these Ordinands and examine them
found them to be of godly life and sound learning?
Area Directors of Ordinands We have.

Do you believe them to be duly called to serve God in this ministry?
Area Directors of Ordinands We do.

The Bishop addresses the Ordinands, saying
Do you believe that God is calling you to this ministry?

Ordinands I do so believe.

The Ordinands turn to face the congregation as the Bishop addresses the people,
saying
People of God, will you support and uphold these Ordinands in their new
ministry?
We will.

Will you continually pray for them?
We will.

Is it your will that they should be ordained?
It is.

The congregation stands as the Ordinands turn to face the Bishop.
                                                                             7

The Collect
The Bishop says

Let us pray.

All pray in silence for a short time.

Almighty and eternal God,
who, for the firmer foundation of our faith,
allowed your holy apostle Thomas
to doubt the resurrection of your Son
till word and sight convinced him:
grant to us, who have not seen, that we also may believe
and so confess Christ as our Lord and our God;
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.

Liturgy of the Word
                                             New Testament Reading
read by
The Reverend Prebendary Marjorie Brown,
Area Director of Ordinands, Edmonton Area

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians.

You are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints
and also members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of
the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. In
him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in
the Lord; in whom you also are built together spiritually into a
dwelling-place for God.

                                                            Ephesians 2. 19-end

This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
                                                                             9
Stand and turn towards the Deacon as the Gospel is proclaimed from the North
Lectern.

                                                           Gospel Reading

A Cantor sings
Alleluia. Speak, Lord, your servants hear you:
you have the message of eternal life. Alleluia.

The Deacon says
The Lord be with you
and also with you.

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.
Glory to you, O Lord.

Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them
when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, ‘We have seen the Lord.’
But he said to them, ‘Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put
my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.’

A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with
them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them
and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ Then he said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here
and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not
doubt but believe.’ Thomas answered him, ‘My Lord and my God!’ Jesus
said to him, ‘Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are
those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.’
                                                                    John 20. 24-29

This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

                                                                     Sermon

The Liturgy of Ordination

                                                      The Declarations

The Ordinands stand and face the Bishop, who says
Deacons are to work with the Bishop and the priests with whom they
serve as heralds of Christ’s kingdom. They are to proclaim the gospel in
word and deed, as agents of God’s purposes of love. They are to serve the
community in which they are set, bringing to the Church the needs and
hopes of all the people. They are to work with their fellow members in
searching out the poor and weak, the sick and lonely and those who are
oppressed and powerless, reaching into the forgotten corners of the world,
that the love of God may be made visible.

Deacons share in the pastoral ministry of the Church and in leading God’s
people in worship. They preach the word, and bring the needs of the world
before the Church in intercession. They accompany those searching for
faith and bring them to baptism. They assist in administering the sacraments;
they distribute communion and minister to the sick and housebound.

Deacons are to seek nourishment from the Scriptures; they are to study
them with God’s people, that the whole Church may be equipped to live
out the gospel in the world. They are to be faithful in prayer, expectant and
watchful for the signs of God’s presence, so that they may reveal his
kingdom among us.

The Bishop says to the Ordinands
We trust that you are fully determined, by the grace of God, to give
yourself wholly to his service, that you may draw his people into that new
life which God has prepared for those who love him.

And now, in order that we may know your mind and purpose, you must
make the declarations we put to you.

                                                                           11
Do you accept the Holy Scriptures as revealing all things necessary for
eternal salvation through faith in Jesus Christ?
Ordinands I do so accept them.

Will you be diligent in prayer, in reading Holy Scripture, and in all studies
that will deepen your faith, and fit you to bear witness to the truth of the
Gospel?
Ordinands By the help of God, I will.

Do you believe the doctrine of the Christian faith as the Church of England
has received it, and in your ministry will you expound and teach it?
Ordinands I believe it, and will so do.

Will you strive to make the love of Christ known through word and
example, and have a particular care for those in need?
Ordinands By the help of God, I will.

Will you be a faithful servant in the household of God, after the example
of Christ, who came not to be served but to serve?
Ordinands By the help of God, I will.

Will you endeavour to fashion your own life and that of your household
according to the way of Christ, that you may be a pattern and example to
Christ’s people?
Ordinands By the help of God, I will.

Will you work with your fellow servants in the Gospel for the sake of the
kingdom of God?
Ordinands By the help of God, I will.

Will you accept the discipline of this Church and give due respect to those
in authority?
Ordinands By the help of God, I will.

Will you then, in the strength of the Holy Spirit, continually stir up the gift
of God that is in you, to grow in holiness and grace?
Ordinands By the help of God, I will.

12
The Bishop says
In the name of the Lord we bid you remember the greatness of the trust
in which you are now to share: the ministry of Christ himself, who for our
sake took the form of a servant. Remember always with thanksgiving that
the people among whom you will minister are made in God’s image and
likeness. In serving them you are serving Christ himself, before whom you
will be called to account.

You cannot bear the weight of this calling in your own strength, but only by
the grace and power of God. Pray therefore that your heart may daily be
enlarged and your understanding of the Scriptures enlightened.

Pray earnestly for the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Remain seated or kneel.

The Ordinands kneel.

                                                                 A Litany

The Sub-Deacon recites a litany.
In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ,
let us pray to the Father.
Lord, have mercy.

For the peace of the whole world,
for the unity of the Holy Church of God,
and for the stability of all,
let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.

For all the members of the Church in their vocation and ministry,
that they may serve him in truth and love,
let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.

                                                                          13
For Sarah our bishop,
and for all bishops, priests and deacons,
that they may hunger for truth and thirst after righteousness,
let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.

For these ordinands
called to be deacons in his Church,
let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.

For the mission of the Church,
for those who are lost and for those who have strayed,
that in faithful witness the people of God may proclaim
the gospel of reconciliation to the ends of the earth,
let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.

For the sick and suffering,
for the aged and infirm,
for the lonely and neglected,
and for all who remember and care for them,
let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.

For the poor and the hungry,
for the homeless and the oppressed,
for all prisoners and captives,
and for our brothers and sisters who are persecuted for their faith,
let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.

For Elizabeth our Queen,
for the leaders of the nations,
and for all in authority,
let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.

14
For ourselves;
for grace to repent and amend our lives,
that we may be pardoned and absolved from all our sins,
let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.

Remembering all who have gone before us in faith,
and in communion with the Blessed Virgin Mary,
St Paul, St Thomas, and all the saints,
we commit ourselves, one another,
and our whole life to Christ our God;
to you, O Lord.

                                              The Ordination Prayer
The Bishop extends her hands towards the Ordinands and says
We praise and glorify you, almighty Father, because in your infinite love you
have formed throughout the world a holy people for your own possession,
a royal priesthood, a universal Church.

We praise and glorify you, because you sent your only Son Jesus Christ to
take the form of a slave; he humbled himself for our sake, and in obedience
accepted death, even death on a cross.

We praise and glorify you because in every age you send your Spirit to fill
those whom you have chosen, to equip your holy people for the work of
ministry for the building up of the Body of Christ.

And now we give you thanks that you have called these your servants,
whom we ordain in your name, to share as deacons in the ministry of the
gospel of Christ, who came not to be served but to serve, and to give his
life as a ransom for many.

Therefore, Father, through Christ our Lord we pray:

The Ordinands come before the Bishop in turn, who says
Send down the Holy Spirit upon your servant N for the office and work of
a deacon in your Church.
The Ordinands kneel before the Bishop in turn, and the Bishop lays her hands on
the head of each Ordinand in silence.

                                                                             15
When the laying on of hands has concluded, the Bishop continues
Through your Spirit, heavenly Father, give these your servants grace and
power to fulfil their ministry. Make them faithful to serve and constant in
advancing your gospel in the world. May they follow the example of Jesus
Christ your Son, who washed the feet of his disciples, and set the needs of
others before his own.

May their life be disciplined and holy, their words declare your love and
their actions reveal your glory, that your people may walk with them in the
way of truth and be made ready for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ;
to whom, with you and your Holy Spirit, belong glory and honour, worship
and praise, now and for ever. Amen.

All stand

                                                                    Vesture

The newly-ordained Deacons stand, are vested in their stoles, and then turn to
face the people.

                                                           The Welcome

The newly-ordained Deacons say
We preach not ourselves but Christ Jesus as Lord,
and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake.
We welcome you as fellow servants in the gospel:
may Christ dwell in your hearts through faith,
that you may be rooted and grounded in love.

All congratulate the newly-ordained Deacons with a round of applause.

The Liturgy of the Eucharist
                                                              The Peace
The Bishop says
We are all one in Christ Jesus.
We belong to him through faith,
heirs of the promise of the Spirit of peace.

The peace of the Lord be always with you
and also with you.

The Deacon says
Let us offer one another a sign of peace.

The Peace is not shared with physical contact. All may turn and bid their
neighbour ‘Peace be with you’. All remain in their places.

Sit

                                                  Offertory Anthem
View me, Lord, a work of thine:
Shall I then lie drown’d in night?
Might thy grace in me but shine,
I should seem made all of light.

Cleanse me, Lord, that I may kneel
At thine altar, pure and light:
They that once thy mercies feel,
Gaze no more on earth’s delight.

       Worldly joys, like shadows, fade
       When the heavenly light appears;
But the cov’nants thou hast made,
Endless, know nor days nor years.

In thy Word, Lord, is my trust,
       To thy mercies fast I fly;
Though I am but clay and dust,
Yet thy grace can lift me high. Amen.
Words: Thomas Campion (1567-1620) Tune: Charles Wood (1886-1926)

                                                                          17
Preparation of the Table

Stand as the Bishop says
Let us pray.
Heavenly Father,
as we set before you these gifts of bread and wine,
bless also the gift of our hearts and minds
as we offer our lives in your service;
for Jesus Christ’s sake.
Amen.

                                              The Eucharistic Prayer

The Bishop says
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give thanks and praise.

It is indeed right and good
that we should give you thanks, praise and glory,
almighty and everlasting God,
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord.
For after his resurrection
he sent out his apostles and evangelists
to preach the gospel to all nations
and lead us in the way of truth.
Himself the chief cornerstone,
he founded his Church upon the apostles
firmly to stand for ever
as a sign of your holiness upon earth
and a living witness to all
of the way that leads to heaven.
And so with angels and archangels
and with all the company of heaven
we lift our voices
and join in their unending hymn of praise:

18
Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might,
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

Accept our praises, heavenly Father,
through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ,
and as we follow his example and obey his command,
grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit
these gifts of bread and wine may be to us his body and his blood;

who, in the same night that he was betrayed,
took bread and gave you thanks;
he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying:
Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;
do this in remembrance of me.

In the same way, after supper
he took the cup and gave you thanks;
he gave it to them, saying:
Drink this, all of you;
this is my blood of the new covenant,
which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

Therefore, heavenly Father,
we remember his offering of himself
made once for all upon the cross;
we proclaim his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension;
we look for the coming of your kingdom,
and with this bread and this cup
we make the memorial of Christ your Son our Lord.

The Deacon says
Great is the mystery of faith.
Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.

                                                                     19
Accept through him our great high priest,
this our sacrifice of thanks and praise,
and as we eat and drink these holy gifts
in the presence of your divine majesty,
renew us by your Spirit,
inspire us with your love
and unite us in the body of your Son,
Jesus Christ our Lord.

Through him, and with him, and in him,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
with all who stand before you in earth and heaven,
we worship you, Father almighty,
in songs of everlasting praise:

Blessing and honour
and glory and power
be yours for ever and ever.
Amen.

                                                     The Lord’s Prayer

The Bishop says
Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us,
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever.
Amen.

Breaking of the Bread

The Bishop breaks the consecrated bread and says
We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.
Though we are many, we are one body
because we all share in one bread.

The Bishop invites the people to receive Holy Communion, saying
Jesus is the Lamb of God
who takes away the sin of the world.
Happy are those who are called to his supper.
Lord, I am not worthy to receive you,
but only say the word, and I shall be healed.

The Bishop says the words of administration and then receives Holy Communion
in both kinds.
The body of Christ keep you in eternal life. Amen.

Please sit and then follow the directions of the Virgers and Cathedral staff.

Please respect the social distancing guidelines by keeping two metres between
yourself and others, including when receiving Holy Communion. Holy Communion
will be administered without the use of words and in one kind only.

All baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own churches are
welcome to receive Holy Communion at the Cathedral.

Those Communicants requiring gluten free hosts are asked to identify themselves
to a member of staff and to receive Holy Communion from the Bishop. Any
member of the congregation may come to receive a blessing; if you come forward
for a blessing, please keep your head bowed. Blessings will be given in silence,
indicated by the sign of the Cross.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata Lamb of God, you take away the sin
mundi: miserere nobis. of the world: have mercy on us.

Prayers after Communion

All stand with the Bishop, who says
Let us pray.

Lord God, the source of truth and love,
keep us faithful to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship,
united in prayer and the breaking of bread,
and one in joy and simplicity of heart,
in Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

                                                The Giving of the Bible

The newly-ordained Deacons are each given a New Testament by the Bishop.

The Bishop says
Receive this book,
as a sign of the authority given you this day
to speak God’s word to his people.
Build them up in his truth
and serve them in his name.

                                                              Dismissal
The Bishop says
May the Father, whose glory fills the heavens,
cleanse you by his holiness and send you to proclaim his word.
Amen.

May Christ, who has ascended to the heights,
pour upon you the riches of his grace.
Amen.

May the Holy Spirit, the comforter,
equip you and strengthen you in your ministry.
Amen.

22
And the blessing of God almighty,
the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit
be upon you now and always.
Amen.

The Deacon says
Go in the peace of Christ.
Thanks be to God.

Before the service the Ordinands make the following Declaration of Assent
and take the required Oaths of Allegiance and Canonical Obedience:

The Preface to the Declaration of Assent

The Church of England is part of the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic
Church, worshipping the one true God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It
professes the faith uniquely revealed in the Holy Scriptures and set forth in
the catholic creeds, which faith the Church is called upon to proclaim
afresh in each generation. Led by the Holy Spirit, it has borne witness to
Christian truth in its historic formularies, the Thirty-nine Articles of
Religion, the Book of Common Prayer, and the Ordering of Bishops, Priests,
and Deacons. In the declaration you are about to make, will you affirm
your loyalty to this inheritance of faith as your inspiration and guidance
under God in bringing the grace and truth of Christ to this generation and
making him known to those in your care?

                                            The Declaration of Assent

I, N, do so affirm, and accordingly declare my belief in the faith which is
revealed in the Holy Scriptures and set forth in the catholic creeds and to
which the historic formularies of the Church of England bear witness; and
in public prayer and administration of the sacraments, I will use only the
forms of service which are authorized or allowed by Canon.
