Rowing - King’s Cup Centenary

181 years of rowing competition – from whaleboats and sculling for “purses” of
gold sovereigns, to championship fours and eights, and contemporary junior crew
sculling, rowing has been continuously conducted at the regatta since 1838.

The Course
The 1,200 metre course from the Tasman Bridge to the regatta grounds has toggle starts for senior rowers,
1,000 metre open water starts for junior rowers, and shorter courses for under 13 and special events.

Saturday 9th Feb. from 7am
For 2019 the rowing program is once again featured on Saturday, improving logistics for rowing clubs and
schools and providing a larger single spectacle and celebration of rowing. Special prize medals have been
struck for placegetters in headline events, and all rowers will receive a 181st anniversary medallion.
Subject to the draw, rowing will commence from 7.00am and conclude by 10.00am
Feature races for 2018 include:
• The “Alexandra Sculls” men’s and women’s championship event.
• The “Secheron Purse” Masters’ men’s and women’s quad sculls
    event.
• AWBF Wooden Eights Race with a prize purse donated by the
    Tasmanian King’s Cup Oarsmen’s Association.
• Denis Mounie Trophy for Championship Eights - Men’s, Women’s
Handicap Eights - spectacular handicap race.
The regatta includes a full program of single, double and quad scull
events for junior (Under 13, 14 and 15) rowers, providing a great
opportunity for extended families to see their younger members.

King’s Cup Centenary
The 1919 Royal Henley Peace Regatta
featured an allied forces eights event.
Australia, Cambridge Uni, Canada, France,
Oxford Uni and the USA rowed for a gold cup
donated by King George V. Two Tasmanians,
Sgt. Arch Robb and Lieut. Fred House rowed
in the Australian crew which won the King’s
Cup. Now the perpetual trophy for the Men’s
Interstate Eight-Oared Championship Race,
the Cup is coming to Hobart for the Regatta
and the AWBF.
The 1919 winning Australian Kings Cup crew
