Bishop Solis Speaking at Young Adult Ministry

One of the popular events of the Young Adult Ministry is Christ
in the City: On Tap. This is an opportunity for young adults
(21-35ish) to gather for food and drinks, hear from a Catholic
speaker about a specific topic, and discuss faith and life with
others in their similar age. This month, the ministry is excited
to announce that the next guest speaker is Bishop Oscar So-
lis. It is an exciting opportunity for the young adults to interact
with the man who faithfully shepherds our diocese. We invite
any young adult to join us on Wednesday, February 20th, at
the Wasatch Brew Pub in Sugarhouse at 7:00 PM. More details
for this event, and for other weekly events with YAM, can be

Welcoming Nick Murakami to the Cathedral
Hello everyone, my name is Nicholas Murakami, but you can call me
Nick. I am a seminarian in my second year of college at Mount Angel
Seminary in Oregon, and I will be on a pastoral assignment here at the
Cathedral for the 2019 spring semester. Essentially, I will be helping
around the parish with just about anything people need help with. I
look forward to meeting and getting to know all of you. To help you
to get to know me a bit better, I should tell a little bit about myself.
I was born in Great Falls, Montana in October of 1998 and moved
to Cheyenne, Wyoming about a year or two later. It was there at the
tender age of five that I first experienced my calling to the priesthood.
When I was about five or six my family moved to Pleasant View, Utah
where my father retired from the Air Force as a Master Sergeant, and
we remained here until I moved to the Seminary. My hobbies include
skateboarding, beatboxing, video games, drawing, and hanging out
with friends. I am excited to be here and look forward to getting to
know everyone here. I ask that you all pray for me and please be as-
sured of my prayers for all of you.
                                                              God Bless,
                                                         Nick Murakami

            Ceremony of Light
On Thursday, January 17th, a Mass for the Unborn and Cer-
emony of Light was held at the Cathdedral. This originated
as a journey throughout the diocese starting on December
8th, offering prayers for the end to abortion. As Veola Bur-
chett, Director for Marriage and Family Life, explained,
“We place candles on the steps of the Cathedral as a tribute
to the lives that have been lost through abortion.” Though
the Cathedral Mass concluded the journey, it does not end
here - we are still called to pray and care for the dignity of

A Month of Life
Parishioner Presence at the March for Life
Women in unplanned pregnancies are often
scared, feel unprepared, alone. The abortion
industry preys on fears and tells women that
they’re not strong enough to parent and achieve
their dreams. It tells us that children are a bur-
den. It treats fertility and pregnancy as a disease.
It tells men they’re irrelevant and have no say
in whether their baby lives or dies. It says that a
child born in poverty or under imperfect circum-
stances is better off dead.
We say, “You’re strong, you’re not alone. You
can do this and we can help!” Sometimes life’s
biggest blessings are unplanned, unexpected. One of the speakers, Lindsey, testified to the horror of abortion and the

she offered to drive her to the PRC. The young woman took her up on

Lindsey kept me updated and the rest of us continued praying. We were
all anxious, but hopeful, while waiting for the next update. When the

The young woman is now excited to meet her little one. Lindsey has been
with her every step of the way. We’ll be throwing her a big baby shower

God took the darkness of Lindsey’s experience of abortion and turned it
into light. God can use you to save others too. He can use your unique

MADELEINE - The Cathedral of the Madeleine
Features of the Cathedral
Throughout 2019, The Madeleine will seek to highlight different features of the Cathedral. Both the interior and the exterior
are decorated with Catholic images, and yet we often forget to look to their deeper significance and why they are included in
our church. The hope is that this section will shed light on why each feature of the Cathedral was hand-picked to add to the
beauty of the building that holds the highest form of praise we can offer - our participation in the Mass.

Angels We Have Heard on High
Upon walking into the Cathedral, one of the most prominent features is the nu-
merous angels that adorn its walls. When I first entered, I remember that being
pointed out to me immediately, that there are too many to count. And yet one
took on that challenge - it has been counted that there are 258 angels protecting
those who pass through.
Though the angels without a doubt add to the beauty found here at the Cathe-
dral of the Madeleine, angels do more than serve as a nice decoration to any
Catholic church. Msgr. Francis Mannion wrote in an article about the angelic
hosts, “From the Incarnation through the ascension, the life of the Word of God
was surrounded by the angels.” They always have been, and they always will
be. They have been present to the salvific work of God from the beginning of
creation, and have assisted human beings in coming to know the Lord--even to
the point of being the first to announce to Mary that she would be Mother to the
Word made flesh. And they are present to us today.
As Catholics, we believe that “the whole life of the Church benefits from the
mysterious and powerful help of the angels” (Catechism of the Catholic Church
#331). In the liturgy of the Mass, we enter into the worship that the angels are
participating in without ceasing. In singing the Gloria, we join in as they sing,
“Glory to God in the highest!” (Luke 2:14), the words they professed at Jesus’
birth and the song they sing constantly before the throne of God. In the Lamb of
God, we echo their words as we prepare to receive Christ in the Eucharistic feast
that the angels are constantly present to, and that we are invited to participate in.
Though we do not know a lot about the angels in the Cathedral specifically,
other than that the windows were crafted by Felix B. Leiftuchter, we do know
that their aesthetic presence in the Cathedral’s art points to the deeper spiritual
reality of their presence to us in our journey to Heaven, reflecting to us what it
means to protect life.
More information on the Catholic belief of angels can be found in the Catechism
of the Catholic Church, paragraphs 328-336.
