AN EVENING WITH
MICHAEL LEUNIG
AUSTRALIA

Internationally acclaimed Australian
cartoonist, writer, painter, philosopher
and poet Michael Leunig shares his love
of cartooning and human observation as
he talks and draws his way through an
evening of sublime charm and insight.

Leunig was declared a National Living Treasure

                                                                                              oper
by the National Trust of Australia in 1997.

                                                                                          Photo: Sam Co
His commentary on political, cultural and
emotional life spans more than forty years and
has often explored the idea of an innocent and
sacred personal world. The fragile ecosystem of
human nature and its relationship to the wider
natural world is a related and recurrent theme.
He describes his approach as regressive,
humorous, messy, mystical, primal and
vaudevillian – producing work that is open
to many interpretations and has been
widely adapted in education, music, theatre,
psychotherapy and spiritual life.
Join us for one special night with the creative
genius that is Michael Leunig.

CONVERSATIONS
WITH DEAD RELATIVES
AOTEAROA NEW ZEALAND

Flaxworks theatre company
Written & performed by Alex Ellis &
Phil Ormsby
Directed by Jennifer Ward-Lealand

Stories. We all have them.

Stories that have been told and retold over
breakfast tables, barbeques, campfires, and
drunken dinner parties. You know the ones.
Epic and incredible family stories. Stories
passed down through generations about
warriors, princesses, ratbags, preachers
and visionaries; stories that tell us where we
came from and who we are. Maybe.
From the team that brought us Miss Jean
Batten, Conversations with Dead Relatives is
a tale of family histories. An exploration of
how these stories shape us, how they affect
how we see our ancestors and, in turn, how
we see ourselves. And like all good stories
there are clashes of ideals, moral dilemmas,
epic adventures and romantic tales of love
and hope. But above all, these stories make
us question our obligations to our ancestors.
Is it enough to just tell their stories?
“It’s funny, moving, evocative and PROUDLY SUPPORTED BY

Dickens and brings orphaned hero Olive, and a
squalid gaggle of hilarious Victorians, to crusty life.
Olive Copperbottom is a rollicking romantic

questionable personal hygiene. It’s Oliver! meets
Blackadder with a saucy feminine twist.
Ashton requests that you should come because

   GARRETT KATO
   CANADA /AUSTRALIA

   Canadian born Australian based singer-songwriter
Garrett Kato is one to watch. His music comes
from his heart and soul, his voice effortlessly
   gentle and soothing.

At the age of 23, Kato relocated to the beaches of
Byron Bay, Australia, and it was there he was spotted by
platinum recording artist Pete Murray. Since then, his
captivating performances have seen him sharing the
stage with the likes of Bernard Fanning, Jack Johnson
   and Pete Murray.
In 2015 Kato released his second LP, That Low and
Lonesome Sound, to much critical acclaim. At times
the recording evokes subtle images of a younger,
darker Springsteen with moments of lush
   beautiful instrumentation from the likes
of Bon Iver and The War on Drugs.
