Dear Parents,
We have all greatly enjoyed the last of the summer sun this week; it has been absolutely glorious! As ever, it has been a fun
and fully packed week and we greatly appreciate being able to reinstate so many activities that we have not been able to
do in such a long time.
Thank you to those of you who were able to join us for our 'Cheese and Wine' evening
on Tuesday night. It was a lovely, sunny evening and so nice to be able to socialise with
you all in the courtyard. We do hope you were able to talk to the teachers you wished
to and, most importantly, were able to meet one another. Yarrells is a warm and
friendly school with a wonderful sense of community and we look forward to seeing
many of you at the Barn Dance tomorrow night; if you haven’t got your ticket you can
buy one on the door.
Year 3 enjoyed a fabulous trip to the New Barn Centre in Dorchester and Year 8 went
to Lulworth on a geography fieldtrip, led by Mrs Sharpe. They were so fortunate to see
a seal! You can read more about their trips further down in this newsletter.
It has been joyous to both host and attend the very first fixtures in such a long while.
The children played against other local prep schools in both football and netball
matches. Further details and match reports are included below.
We are delighted to have been able to reinstate our buddy system. All new children have been assigned a buddy as have
all children in Reception. Mrs Cunningham spoke to the children in assembly about what it means to be a good buddy and
how to be a genuinely kind and caring friend. The children will have opportunities to meet with their buddy over some
break times and other special occasions, and will be encouraged to always keep a special eye on their buddy. We also have
a little buddy post-box so the children will be encouraged to send their buddy cards or letters.
Children in the Friday cooking club, led by Mrs Philbey, were able to taste the fruits
of their labours after visiting the orchard at Mrs Covell's house last Friday. They
enjoyed picking apples straight off the tree and then putting them straight in to bake
a rather delicious apple crumble!
The whole school have been enraptured by our little flock of nine baby
chicks. Children entered names into a hat so every chick has been adorned with a
name! They are: Buddyetta, Pepper, Fluffo, Popcorn, Flame, Dominic, Gucci, Jackie
and Bumble. They have visited many classrooms and the children have enjoyed
holding them in their little hands. It is quite remarkable to think the chicks were all inside eggs just over a week ago and
now they are quite noisy little creatures with tail feathers! However, it is now time to let them embark on their forward
journey and to leave Yarrells having been given a very loving start in life. Farewell little chicks!
This week, many of our Year 6 pupils will be sitting Grammar entrance examinations. We
wish them all the best of luck and will be thinking about them. They are all well prepared
and deserve to do well.
Furthermore, Year 6 have worked hard at writing letters of application for positions of
responsibility. Some of the letters were truly outstanding and indicative of the pride,
Yarrells School & Nursery Page 1 of 8 Friday 24th September 2021care and time some children put into their work. The experience will undoubtedly stand them in good stead for the future
when they wish to apply for further roles. A team of teachers will give special consideration to every application and roles
will be awarded very soon.
Year 6 children are being rewarded with a three-day residential trip to Osmington Bay commencing on Monday. They all
deserve to have a lot of fun after a rather pressured time. We wish them all a safe and wonderful time.

Early Years & Pre-Prep
Greenwood has been a hive of activity this week. The chicks came to visit us from the Science
Lab and we were careful to be gentle with them and use quiet voices. We learnt that they hatch
from eggs and will grow into chickens! The garden has been full of produce from our vegetable
patch and we have been picking the green beans. We then used these to order them by size and
explored with them in the tuff tray. It was exciting to find out the beans were pink! Next week
we start our learning all about the Circus so roll up, roll up and come with us to the most
wonderful show on earth!
Year 1 Miss A Denison & Mrs J Williams
This week, in science, we had the opportunity to spend time with the new chicks! The children all had the chance to touch
or hold them and they asked Mrs Barnes some fantastic questions. We then went back inside and compared the chicks to
a fully-grown hen and talked about their lifecycle. Our science lesson certainly came to life and the children were so excited.
Yarrells School & Nursery Page 3 of 8 Friday 24th September 2021Year 3 Trip to New Barn Mrs L Ing & Miss E Paterson The day finally arrived, it was Year 3’s trip to the New Barn Field Centre. Excitedly, we waited in anticipation, on the grass area. Suddenly a Roman soldier charged towards us shouting for us to follow him. He introduced himself as Maximus and then explained what life was like in Roman Britain, showing us around a Roman home. We were excited to undertake a number of activities: making butter and grinding grain and making a Roman medicine which would have been used as an antiseptic. It was hard work! After lunch, we all sat in a Celtic round house and listened to a story about Queen Boudicca. We enjoyed learning about Boudicca and the Iceni tribe but were pleased to leave the smoky house to learn about Roman weapons and armour. We then created mosaics using tiny ceramic tiles and carved pictures into a piece of chalk. It was lots of fun! It was a great start to our Roman Britain topic! Mrs E Barnes What an amazing two weeks it has been looking after the Living Eggs. Last week was filled with excitement as we watched the eggs hatch either live in the science lab, or via a live stream in classrooms across the school. It was very special to hear the ripples of excitement flowing out of the windows as various classes watched the baby chicks emerge. This week has been just as exciting as we got to hold the chicks and carry out some investigations. The grass outside the lab has seen a huge range of classes gather upon it to hold the chicks and watch them peck around in the grass. The younger years have spent time holding them with me and have asked lots of questions about them and we have looked at their wings growing. The older years looked at the weight of the chicks and their size and development over the week. The Year 8's planned their own investigations to carry out and came up with the following two questions: 'Which food will be most popular with the chicks?' 'Is there a difference between the male and female chick's weight?' They set up a course of different foods and timed how long the chicks spent eating each food and then plotted a graph. Greenwood also looked after the chicks for a day and had a lot of fun with them. It has been an amazing experience for the whole school and it will be sad to see them go to their loving homes on Friday. Photos of Year 5 Lesson Year 8 Trip to Lulworth Mrs L Sharpe The Year 8's spent the day on Thursday finding out about the Jurassic Coast on their geography field trip to Lulworth Cove. As well as finding out about the geology and reinforcing their understanding of coastal processes and landforms, they were able to find out about the flora and fauna of the area. It was with great excitement that we spotted a very confident seal in the cove, which is a fairly rare sight according to the ranger who has worked there for 10 years and only seen seals a couple of times in the cove itself. We enjoyed a treat of fish and chips for lunch before walking up the hill and over to Durdle Door. We high fived a dinosaur footprint and dodged the cattle on route. They had a chance to do some data collection, finding out about biological weathering and the impact of people on the footpaths. We found out approximately 2 million feet walk along this part of the South West Coastal Path every year! It was a fantastic day, the sun was shining, the views were stunning and we learnt so much. I was very proud of the Year 8's – they asked good questions, really focused and I didn't hear a single complaint about the steep hill! What an amazing part of the world we live in! Year 6 Football Match v BCS
Wednesday 22nd September 2021
Rafferty V, A Team Captain reports… Today we were
so excited to get back to playing matches! BCS are a
strong team and they started well. They scored the
first goal but we came back stronger! We worked so
well as a team and we were determined to win. The
final score was 6-1 to Yarrells!
Rafferty scored 4 goals and Paddy 2.
Well done to all the players.
Oli J, B Team Captain reports… It was a great match vs BCS, even though we lost 5:2 everyone tried their hardest and did not
stop running. I think for our next game we could stop blaming each other for a mistake. Unlucky Yarrells, we will win next
time.
Josh B, C Team Captain reports… On Wednesday we had an exciting afternoon playing football at Upton Rec for our first
match in 2 years! We were playing BCS and at half-time we were winning 2-0. Zac, Henry, Oliver and Jacob all scored goals
and I managed to save a few too! A great team effort and the final score was 6-3 to Yarrells.
We had a great time enjoying our football in the autumn sunshine. Well done Yarrells!
Yarrells School & Nursery Page 6 of 8 Friday 24th September 2021Mrs Barnes reports… For Games this week Year 8 were lucky enough to head to Poole Park for some water sports action.
