                                    Parental Involvement Policy

GOAL
To ensure that parents and community members have the opportunity to assist and support the
educational process by participating in decision making and through volunteer activities. It is our
desire to have parents and community members have the opportunity to be an integral part of our
students learning process.

   A. Involvement
Parents will be encouraged to become involved in the joint development and review of the
Single School Plan for Achievement through participation in School Site Council Meetings and
goal setting meetings. The school will increase parent/community involvement through school
programs and activities created and maintained to improve student academic achievement and
school performance by participation of parents in the School Site Council (SSC), Sports
Committee, Special School events, and as classroom volunteers.

Parent feedback will continue to be incorporated through local needs assessments surveys,
annual evaluations and discussions at meetings. Parents will always be invited to participate in
school / community events such as awards assemblies, fund-raising events, Parent/Teacher
conferences, Back to School Night, Open House, field trips, athletic events, graduation
ceremonies, Holiday Programs, and any other special events.

   B. Communications
It is very important to the success of students that two-way communication between families
and school is in place. The following documents are sent home on a yearly, monthly, or weekly
      basis:
The GIFTS (Gazelle Information from Teachers and School) newsletter is sent home
              weekly.
A weekly breakfast and lunch menu is included in the weekly GIFTS.
A calendar of important dates and events is sent home yearly or as needed.
Teachers hand out yearly expectations to students at the beginning of the school year.
Parent-Student Handbooks are updated and handed out yearly and are available at the
              school website http://gazelleuesd.cyberschool.com/.

Letters, phone calls, progress reports and informal and formal conferences are held
concerning students’ behavior, student progress and, state and local standards, test scores,
work samples, and instructional goals. The administrator, staff and parents work effectively
      toward achieving our long-range goals.

   C. Training
Gazelle Elementary School will provide information for parents regarding parenting classes.
Additionally School Site Counsel and parent meetings will update and train parents during
council meetings regarding budgetary concerns, District and State Standards, Test Results,
the importance of school attendance, standards-based education, etc. Program goals and
evaluation are discussed and on-going including an annual evaluation of the content and
effectiveness of our parental involvement policy and then use those findings of the evaluation
to design a more effective policy.

Orientation for incoming Kindergarten students will be held the spring before they will attend
school. A bridge program to high School will take place each spring.

   D. Community Resources
Community resources are encouraged to enrich our school program. Field trips offer real-life
practical experiences for students. Our students take field trips into the community to visit and
participate in activities at the high school, college, library, museum, hospital, Siskiyou County
Environmental Area, Shasta valley Wildlife Area, and other sites.

Gazelle Elementary School will continue to reach out to the community of volunteers. Parents
are asked to help in the library. Parents volunteer in each classroom, at school events, and
      participate at fund-raisers.

   E. Parent Pledge and School Compact
We believe that an important part of a child’s growth depends on developing self-discipline and
understanding that school rules are adopted for the safety and benefit of the students. These
rules are to be recognized and obeyed by all at all times. It is the belief of our school that this
kind of self-discipline is the beginning of a responsible and law-abiding adult citizen in our
community. The Gazelle Parent-Student Handbook is sent home at the beginning of each
      school year to all students/parents.

Parent Involvement
The parents’ role at Gazelle Elementary School is very important. The effectiveness of a school
depends on the cooperative efforts of the parents, teachers, administrator and students. We
encourage and expect you to participate in parent-teacher conferences, meetings, and to support
various activities. You can be involved in other areas by supporting the following:

Parent Volunteers
   1. First your child will benefit when you help at the school, your child gets the message that you
      feel learning is important.
   2. You will get to know your child/children’s teachers. Knowing the teacher makes it easier to ask
for help when your child needs help.
   3. The school will benefit. You will share what you know with others.
   4. The community will benefit. As you learn more about what happens you will share with others.
   5. Volunteering is easy. We will be glad to train you. There are things you can do at school, at
      home, on field trips.
   6. Volunteering is satisfying. You will meet other parents. You may learn new skills. It may make
      you feel good.

Room Parents
Parents willing to volunteer in classrooms for party preparation should contact the teacher. If a room
parent comes forward, he or she will be responsible for arranging class parties. Room parents may
ask other parents to assist in coordinating refreshments and activities. Parties are usually held at
Halloween, Christmas, and Easter. If parents would like to bring refreshments on their child’s
birthday, they must first arrange to do so with the teacher. Birthday refreshments are to be passed out
immediately following lunch or immediately preceding departure from school.

Classroom Visitations
You are urged to visit the school, meet your child’s teacher and become acquainted. You may make
arrangements through the teacher or the principal. Periodic twenty-minute visits are recommended

Education Code. For grade level we focus on skills specified in the “standards: and the scope and
sequence of California State Framework.

Homework
Homework is a necessary part of each student’s educational program. It’s success depends greatly
on the cooperation between home and school. Homework is given to allow the student time to
complete or expand a classroom assignment. It develops good work habits and a sense of
responsibility. Homework is assigned Monday through Thursday. Extended assignments may be
assigned and scheduled over a period of time. Students are encouraged to take part in the After
School Program where assistance can take place by instructional aides who are all NCLB qualified
and the sight director who is a credentialed teacher. Tutoring is also available with the classroom
teachers.
