More equal sharing of care would reduce the pay gap
Our new study shows that a woman's burden
of unpaid care is one of the main reasons for
the gender pay gap. Even when employed,
women spend 90 minutes more per day thanemployed men on unpaid care. EU Member
States with a more equal division of unpaid
care tend to have lower gender gaps in
earnings. Read more here.
Sexism at work. How can we stop it?
Our ready-to-use handbook shows how
organisations can ensure all employees feel
safe, respected and ful lled. EIGE’s handbook
explains what sexism is and can help
managers root out sexist behaviours
with these steps. Read more and share with
your colleagues.
EU needs stronger safeguards to protect victims of
violence
The rst wave of coronavirus lockdowns led to
spikes in domestic violence reports across the
EU. While many EU Member States quickly
rolled out extra measures to protect victims of
gender-based violence, our new study reveals
that overall support systems were fragile and
often insu cient. Find out more here.

What makes witnesses of intimate partner violence
intervene?
Around 20–30 % of calls to domestic violence
hotlines come from witnesses. Our report
shows that witnesses often want to assist by
talking to the victim or helping them access
support services. Witnesses are more likely to
intervene if they understand what intimate
partner violence is and can report
anonymously. Explore more here.Good to know

September de nition: work-family balance
This term describes maintaining the family
and home and carrying out paid employment.
This dual responsibility usually falls on
women. A more equal division of unpaid work
would improve the progress towards equal
opportunities for women and men. Find more
terms in our Glossary and Thesaurus here.
More regional news
We have launched a new webpage on EIGE's
cooperation with EU candidate countries and
potential candidates! You can now nd the
latest gender equality news from the Western

The world lit up in orange
This November marked the 16 days of
activism campaign to end gender-based
violence. Around the world, buildings were lit
up in orange - a colour that symbolises hope in
a world free from violence. We lit up EU house
in Vilnius and had 17 partners join our
campaign in Lithuania. See our Orange the
World photo gallery here.

Our work programme 2021-2023
We plan to continue measuring the progress of
gender equality in the EU with our Gender
Equality Index, and keep our Gender Statistics
Database updated. We will add new resources
to our online platform on gender
mainstreaming and support the Member
States to strengthen their response to victims
of violence. Read our work plan here.
