CTC Far East’s newly refurbished training
centre has been busy with trainees attending its
Maritime Culinary Catering Development Programme.
The programme, which is all about increasing galley
standards onboard, also opens up career development
for messmen who are encouraged to progress their
training continually to reach chef status.

Our Operations Manager, Aileen De Guzman, recently
spoke to one of our graduates about his experiences
of the programme. CCK Kevin Casicas said: “I am so
blessed and honoured to be part of MCDP (Maritime
Culinary Catering Development Programme) because
the course has strengthened my skillset and MCTC
is the reason why I am here right now. With the
opportunity MCTC has given me and, of course, my
company, BW Shipping, I was confident I would be able
to reach my dreams for me and my family. I would
like to thank MCTC for keeping in touch with me for
guidance, updates, and assistance. I feel like family to
them.”

In response, Ms De Guzman added: “It’s a real
privilege to see how far Kevin has come through the
programme. It also shows the value of the training

for MCTC’s operations across Germany,
Benelux and the Scandinavian Markets.

What encouraged you to enter the catering
management industry?
My family’s background is in the shipping industry,
so it seemed like a natural progression for me to
enter the marine catering market. I’ve spent the last
20 years in shipping, towage and offshore energy,
giving me a real understanding of the importance
of a healthy and motivated crew, which is the key
decisive factor of vessel performance. Life at sea
can be tough, but mealtimes bring us all together to
bond. I’d met Christian Ioannou, MCTC’s Managing
Director, and his team before joining and was inspired
by the company’s commitment to wanting to improve
catering for the benefit of seafarers’ health. Covid-19
has also helped highlight the importance of health and
nutrition. Health cannot be bought. As an industry,
we need to continually invest in our crews’ wellbeing,
as they are the figurehead of any vessel operation.
Flawless crew nutrition, which is as important as
lube oil is for the engine, is hugely beneficial for the
crew, and for the ship manager and owner because it
increases productivity.

How do you think MCTC can support the sector? experts such as food technologists and nutritionists

M CTC has issued a stark warning to the maritime
