Dear students,
Bienvenue, welcome, bienvenudo, welcome... at the University of Réunion Island, the only French and European
university in the Indian Ocean.
You have chosen an institution known for its international orientation, which is why we attract a growing number of

Course of the academic year
In France, the academic year does not follow the calendar year. Thus, at the UR, the academic year begins in August and
ends in July. The year is divided into two semesters: Semester 1 (S1) from August to December and Semester 2 (S2) from
January to July.
Grading system and credits
In France, assessments are graded on 20 points, 10 being the minimum score to validate an exam.
France uses the European credit transfer system (ECTS) to facilitate the comparison and understanding of the courses of
studies followed by students from different European countries.
ECTS are accumulated every semester. One semester is equivalent to 30 credits, so one year corresponds to 60 credits, i.e.
1500 to 1800 hours of face-to-face classes (1 credit equals 25 to 30 hours of work).
7APPLICATION
Erasmus+ Europe Students
You obtained the green light from your university to come and study at the UR. You will therefore have to complete:
- Our electronic Erasmus application form;
- The Erasmus study contract (mobility kit);
- The university housing application form (if applicable).
The Department of International Relations (DRI) will examine these applications and send you a reply with all the information
you need to complete your application:
- The letter of acceptance;
- Link for your administrative registration;
- The documents for your accommodation at the CROUS (depending on the number of places available).
Student on exchange program outside of Europe (ISEP, BCI, PPI, INHA)
ISEP:
You apply directly on the ISEP site that transmits your application to the ISEP coordinator of the UR who carries out
the acceptance of the application. Once your application is validated, you will receive a letter of acceptance from ISEP.
From there, we register you on the e-candidate platform to proceed to the admission. You then receive a link asking
you to validate and complete your account and to attach the requested supporting documents. Once the file has been
completed and submitted, you will receive a letter of admission from the UR which will allow you to begin your visa
procedures.
BCI:
You should contact your universities’ service responsible for the BCI exchange. You will then have to complete an
electronic application form after they have given you a personal access code (all the information on the online
application is available on the BCI website). This form must be edited and submitted, along with all the documents
required by the BCI file, to your university's exchange service. Your university will make the first selection and the
names of the selected candidates will be sent to the UR. From there, we register you on the e-candidate platform. You
will then receive a link asking you to validate and complete your account and to attach the required supporting
documents, including the study contract. This document is sent to the RI intermediary (teacher in charge of exchanges
in your course of studies) who validates your application. Only once they have validated your application and your file
is complete on the e-candidate platform, we will be able to validate your file. If we are able to accept your application,
you will receive your letter of admission from the UR which allows you to begin your visa procedures. In case of refusal,
your application will be transferred to the universities that you have selected as your 2nd or 3rd choice.
BPI and INHA:
You must apply directly to your university. The University makes a first selection and sends the list of nominated students to
the RU. From there, we register you on the e-candidate platform. You will then receive a link asking you to validate and
complete your account and to attach the required supporting documents, including the study contract. This document is sent
to the RI intermediary (teacher in charge of exchanges in your course of studies) who validates your application. Only once
they have validated your application and your file is complete on the e-candidate platform, we will be able to validate your
file. If we are able to accept your application, you will receive your letter of admission from the UR which allows you to begin
your visa procedures.
Announcement of arrival: as soon as your e-application is complete, an automatic e-mail will be sent to you asking you to
complete the "arrival announcement form" if you wish to be met directly at the airport upon your arrival in Reunion Island.

International students outside exchange program and outside the EU/EEE
Enrolment in 1st year of Licence, DUT or PACES :
• You are in a country within the Campus France system:
You must obligatorily follow the CEF (Centre pour les Etudes en France) procedure on the platform "études en
France" in which you withdraw a Demande d'Admission Préalable (DAP) via the site: www.
"nameofcountry".campusfrance.org (example: www.madagascar.campusfrance.org).

• You already live in France:
You must collect your DAP-dossier Vert from the Service de la Scolarité de l'UR. It is also available on this site:

You must fill out the Validation of Studies (VE) or Validation of Personal and Professional Acquired
Knowledge (VAPP) application form on the UR website: scolarite.univ-reunion.fr
9ADMINISTRATIVE INSCRIPTION
REMINDER: To enroll to the UR, you need to have at least a B1 level in French language.
International students on an exchange program (Europe and outside Europe)
It is mandatory to enroll to the UR via the link sent to you by the DRI. This will allow you to obtain your student card upon
your arrival, benefitting from the numerous discounts offered to students on campus. You may also take advantage of the
Personalized Housing Assistance.
GOOD TO KNOW: Exchange students are exonerated from registration fees and the CVEC.
International students outside exchange program
The online registration to the UR is mandatory. Follow the procedure corresponding to the situation in which you find
yourself.
- You are in a country with a Campus France area:
Registration is done online via the UR website with your Campus France login and password.
- You are in a country without a Campus France space and/or already reside in France:
For a first registration in L1 or in the first year of DUT or PACES, the UR will provide you with an access to the
website. For all other registrations, this is done via the e-Candidate platform.
GOOD TO KNOW: You will have to pay the CVEC (contribution vie étudiante et campus) which amounts to 91 € as well as the
registration fees related to your training.
10COURSE REGISTRATION
Students on exchange program (Europe and outside Europe)
Once you arrive at the UR, you must validate the courses you will take to reach the number of ECTS required for
your mobility. For this, you need to consult the “catalogue de formations” on the universities’ website:
http://www.univ-reunion.fr/formation/.
Depending on the exchange program and the type of mobility, you may be required to take certain courses. These
include courses that improve your knowledge of the French language and contribute to a better understanding of
Creole society.
We strongly advise non-French speaking foreign students to follow the courses:
- French as a Foreign Language (FLE): 3 or 4 ECTS
- Theme/Version in English: 4 ECTS (German-speaking students must take the same courses in German-
French, for the credits see the course schedule on the website)
- Environment, society and cultures of Reunion Island: 3 ECTS

International Students outside exchange program
Once your administrative registration is completed, you will need to validate your courses (“inscription pédagogique”). To
do so, you will have to directly contact the “service pédagogique” of your UFR.
VISA AND RESIDENCE TITLE
Students from EU countries
Since 2004, nationals of European Union member states or the Swiss confederation are no longer required to hold a
residence permit to reside in Reunion Island. All you need is a valid passport or national identity card.
Students from outside the UE/EEE
To obtain a residence permit, you need to very carefully follow every step of the procedure online as soon as you arrive:

After buying the tax stamp („timbre fiscal“), you must confirm and download your file.
This formality is mandatory. If you don’t register within 3 months of your arrival in France, you will be considered by the
French authorities as not holding a valid residence permit.

11CAMPUS LIFE
WELCOME
Reception at the airport
The DRI organizes personalized welcomes at the airport. For this, the form "Annonce d’Arrivée" needs to be returned to the
DRI and your arrival needs to be between Monday and Friday (at best in the morning). Upon your landing at the airport, a
student-tutor will be waiting for you at the “accueil information” desk.
Students who study on the South Campus of Le Tampon and St Pierre will be accompanied to the bus stop (located 100m
away) to take the “Car Jaune” (Ticket price: 2 Euros).
Welcome events
The IR intermediary of your UFR will organize a meeting in the first weeks in order to inform you about your schedule, the
first steps to take, the functioning of the university and the UFR and the persons to contact for questions regarding the
course selection.
On Friday, September 6, the DRI organizes a more general meeting which brings together all international students and all
the actors of the university in order to present you all the services at your disposal, the rules and the information you need
to know.

GOOD TO KNOW: The exact start or end dates of courses and exams vary from one UFR to another. They are indicated in the
letter of acceptance. Some UFRs may organize re-sit exams in the first half of July.
The University of Reunion Island offers many activities on campus, so all you have to do is choose where to start!
12CULTURAL ACTIVITIES
The University's cultural initiative regularly organizes film screenings, exhibitions, concerts, conferences, etc. Clubs (choir,
theater, improvisation, film club) and courses to obtain a variety of qualifications (UE) are also offered.

SPORTS
Sports enthusiast? The University Service of Physical and Sports Activities (SUAPS), offers you:
- Team sports
- Individual sports
- Racquet sports
- Artistic activities and expression
- Fitness activities
- Relaxation activities
- Fighting activities and martial arts
- Outdoor sports
SUAPS occasionally organizes events such as weekend sports activities, gala shows, competitions or the Sports and
Cultural Week.
After your administrative registration, you automatically benefit from one free activity. The second activity will cost 10
Euros.
GOOD TO KNOW: The following university sports associations are represented on Campus:
- ASCUR: Discovery of a large number of activities, generally outdoors.
- RUC: the largest sports association in the DOM TOM with great competitive spirit
- GRAND AIR: Association of outdoor activities
- ASUR: the only multi-sport association present on campus Le Tampon.

STUDENT INITIATIVES
Meet new people? Pursuing a hobby after class? Start a new project?
There are more than twenty student associations at the university, which enable students to organize projects, suggest
events, share experiences and strengthen the community on campus.

MAISON DES ETUDIANTS (MDE)
These accommodations include spaces that are self-managed by students and entirely dedicated to them. There you will be
able to get information about the university, events, news, cultural and sports activities, etc. There is a self-access computer
room, a meeting room (for setting up a student project, association gatherings or simply discussion or revision groups), and
fun activities (billiards, creative workshops, board games, etc.).
You can find an MDE at the different sites of Moufia, IUT, IAE, and Le Tampon.
13MAISON DES LANGUES (MDL)
Improve your French with the Maison des Langues. It is a transversal structure accessible to all and has a branch on each
campus (Moufia and Tampon).
It has several missions including the reception of foreign students who wish to improve their French. It offers three levels of
courses in French as a Foreign Language (FLE): beginners, intermediate and advanced courses.
It is also possible to take French language diplomas:
- DELF: elementary diploma of French language (A1 to B2)
- DALF: Advanced Diploma in French Language (C1 to C2)
CATERING
In the north, in Moufia, you will find two university restaurants, Hippolyte Foucque (price: 3.25 Euros per meal) and La
Bourbonnaise (the only restaurant open until 8pm). There is also a cafeteria, Le Croustillant.
Please note that it is possible to get a discount by paying with the IZLY* card, that credit cards are not accepted and that it is
therefore advisable to have some change at your disposal (no more than 10 euros).
In the city center of Saint-Denis, at the IAE, you will also find a cafeteria. At the Tampon campus, you can have lunch in the
university restaurant and in the cafeteria.
GOOD TO KNOW: These restaurants are closed until August 15th. Please keep this in mind if you arrive earlier than this
date. While the university is in session, the restaurants are closed from Saturday evening to Monday morning.

MEDICAL SERVICE (SUMPPS)
Your health is a major asset for your success. To ensure your physical and mental well-being, a medical-psycho-social team
is at your disposal with sensitization and prevention measures, health services and adapted support in case of disability.

LIBRARIES
The UR has six libraries spread over all the sites where you will find all the documents you need for your studies: books,
reviews, press, dissertations, theses, DVDs. You may consult the materials on site, borrow them or to read them online.
You will find on site:
- A working environment adapted to your needs: all the documents to accompany your studies (manuals, methodology,
professional insertion), group work rooms, computers with printers, scanners and photocopiers, free Wi-Fi access as
well as advice and help with your research.
- Relaxation areas: exhibitions, a press booth, comic books, novels, DVDs, documentation on the Indian Ocean
(literature, travel guides, studies).
From your home:
- Digital Library: available 24/7
- E-reviews, e-books, online theses, digital press, literary corpus, etc.

DIGITAL SERVICES
The Pass' Kampus
Your student card takes the form of a multi-purpose card called "Pass' Kampus". It allows you to:
- Access your accommodation at the CROUS;
- Pay for your meals at the CROUS (restaurant or cafeteria) via the IZLY application (transfer) or at the Monetique (cash
recharge);
- To make photocopies.

Email address
As soon as your administrative registration is validated, you will receive an email containing your student identifiers (e-mail
address and password).
You will need them to connect to the Wi-Fi and to your ENT.
Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi is freely available on the different campuses. The main network is called EDUROAM. You can us the “Kampus”-
network (especially within the university residences).
E-Learning („Environnement Numérique de Travail“ (ENT))
The ENT is the platform on which you will be able to access your schedule, emails, courses and course materials on the
University's Moodle.

Exchange students: the DRI is your contact person concerning all questions regarding your file with the CROUS. All

Students outside the exchange program: Once your registration is complete, you will have to get in touch directly with the

GOOD TO KNOW:
- Renting agencies demand a fee for their service
- The amount, duration and conditions of your rent will be fixed in a leasing contract
- You will be required to take up an insurance for your accommodation
- The rent is paid on the first day of each month

If you have not found accommodation before your arrival on the island of La Réunion, you can resort to a hotel. Find more

Health Insurance (“Assurance maladie” or “Sécurité sociale”)
You do not have to join the French health insurance system if:
- You are a citizen of an EU or EEA member state. A proof of insurance (European Health Insurance Card
or private insurance) is sufficient.
- You are enrolled in a university in Quebec. We require form SE401Q106 to ensure that you are affiliated
with the social security system.
You are a foreign student from a non-EEA country (and your stay lasts more than 3 months): In order to benefit
from health coverage, you are required to create a file with the French health insurance. To do so, follow this

Mutuelle
The French health insurance covers only a portion of the costs you may incur. In order to be reimbursed for the expenses
you incur, you can take out a complementary health insurance ("mutuelle"). This is highly recommended.
Civil liability
You must take out liability insurance upon arrival. This is a compulsory insurance that covers you in case of accidental
damage. This can be issued by a bank or your insurance company (your accommodation and/or your mutuelle).

With the “Réuni'pass Etudiant”, students can freely use all the transport networks of the island previously mentioned. The
card costs 50 Euros per year and 20 Euros per semester. You can register online: https://www.regionreunion.com/aides-
services/reuni-pass-etudiant.
After receiving the confirmation e-mail, you can pay and collect your card in one of the nine points of sale (Bus stations of
Saint-Pierre, Saint-Louis, Saint-Paul, Le Port, Saint-Denis, Saint-André, Saint-Benoît and the points of sale of Saint-Leu and
Saint-Joseph). Checks from foreign banks are not accepted.
A regular shuttle bus runs from Roland Garros airport to the bus station of Saint-Denis in the city center.
Car
The numerous car rentals on the island are used particularly frequently for excursions into the heights and to reach remote
hiking trails.
To rent a car, you must be over 21 years old and have held your driving license for at least one year. Usually a deposit is
required that needs to be paid by credit card.

PHONE CONTRACT
In Reunion Island, the telephone network works in the same way as in mainland France. You can use your own number
but keep in mind the conditions of your mobile operator for using your cell phone abroad.

GROCERY STORE
On campus Moufia there is a solidarity grocery store for students. The grocery store is located next to the CROUS
accommodation cité campus 2, opposite the pedestrian bridge.
As a student you have free access to the store. You will find a wide range of products with prices between 10 cents and 4
Euros.

Student job
The MDL is in partnership with the Saint-Denis town hall to offer exchange students the opportunity to work in the town's
nursery and elementary schools. You will work in pairs in classes during lunchtime (between noon and 1 pm) between once
and four times a week.
After your online application, you will be asked to attend a short job interview. The remuneration is 22 € net per hour.
18WARNING: If you wish to work during your stay and you are not a citizen of a European Union member country, you will have
to obtain a residence permit from the Prefecture.

Languages: French is the official language, but most of the Reunionese speak Reunionese Creole and even several other
community languages such as Tamil (the Tamil Indians), Gujarati (the Indo-Muslims from Gujarat), Chinese, Malagasy or
Comorian.
For several years now, the Creole language has been taught at the University of Reunion Island.
Religions: Mainly Catholic, Muslim and Hindu.
Geography: Volcanic and mountainous island belonging to the Mascarene archipelago.
Climate: Tropical with two seasons, the austral winter (cool season from May to November) and the austral summer (hot and
humid season) from November to April, and a rainy season (cyclonic period from December to March).
GOOD TO KNOW: Reunion Island being well equipped, cyclones are rarely deadly. However, it is necessary to keep up to date
by reading the press, listening to the radio and calling the services of Météo France. Please be conscious of the warning
systems.
Time zone: GMT +4, 2 hours ahead of daylight-saving time in metropolitan France (from the end of March to the end of
September) and 3 hours ahead of winter time (from the end of September to the end of March). Reunion Island does not

21CONCERNING THE INTEGRATION INTO CAMPUS LIFE
ISRUN - International Students of Reunion Island
ISRUN is a student association created in September 2017 to welcome international students to Reunion Island. Most of its
members have themselves studied abroad in the past. Its objective is to facilitate the academic and social integration of
international students at the UR. ISRUN helps with administrative procedures and wishes to bring international students
closer to local students and their culture by organizing cultural and historical evenings and trips. The association is also
committed to the promotion of international mobility.

AEMR - Association des Etudiants Malgaches de La Réunion
The AEMR is a student association founded in 1994 and based in the CROUS next to the University of Reunion Island. The
members - all persons without distinctions of origin, gender and convictions - share a common interest: Madagascar. They
are guardians of Malagasy culture with the aim of preserving and promoting their identity within the university community.
The activities within the association include assistance and advice to new students, various outings and activities to discover

AECR - Association des Etudiants Comoriens à La Réunion
The AECR was created in 1994 to present and defend the interests of students of Comorian origin while trying to maintain
permanent contacts between students and the Comorian community present on the island. Since its creation, the association
has been organizing or participating in various cultural activities (festivals, exhibitions, sports tournaments, conferences) at

brings together international students and local students.
Would you like some help with your paperwork, your accommodation and job applications? Would you like to discover the
local culture and practice the language? Would you like to meet local students?
With the BuddySystem, we will find a Buddy for you who will share his or her knowledge of the local culture.
On our website buddysystem.eu, it takes you less than 5 minutes to register by providing basic information about you
(home university, age, sex, hobbies, date of arrival and departure, etc.).
Then, the local coordinator of your city will be able to assign you a Buddy (a local student if you are abroad or an
international student if you are a local) corresponding to your expectations with the help of our algorithm!
All you have to do is to contact your Buddy, share with him or her the experience of the BuddySystem and follow up on
the services and events offered on the Platform!
