 A multicultural pearl
a mix of history and nature

THIS guide is a useful tool to get to know a territory that is a portion of a
beautiful land, a corner of Italy and Europe that for its naturalistic aspects and
its cultural peculiarities is proposed as an ideal destination for attentive and
demanding travelers, available to open up to the "feelings of the places".
Acri is a significant pearl of Calabria, a place where different cultures have
mixed and contaminated over the centuries.
Arrive with this guide in the town of Sila, but ask the locals to lead you
around, get information on places to eat, let them tell you the beauty of its
rich and not always known history.
Acri is the city of Vincenzo Padula, who with his studies on the popular world
and his works is one of the most illustrious initiators of anthropological
studies and the Southern Question.
The homonymous Foundation preserves and publishes his unpublished
works.
It is the city of Sant’Angelo, proclaimed a saint on October 15, 2017, to which
the majestic Basilica with the Museum of the saint is dedicated.
You can visit the Sanseverino-Falcone Palace, built by the Sanseverino
Princes, then purchased by the Falcone family and donated by them to the
Municipality that oversaw the renovation. Today the Palazzo, seat of the
Municipal Council, houses the MACA, a contemporary art museum that
contains the works in glass fusion and the paintings donated by the Maestro
Silvio Vigliaturo, the Flora Museum, the Risorgimento Museum, the Civic
Library. Inside you will be able to admire an exhibition of archaeological finds
dating back to the Neolithic period, the result of research in Colle Logna.
You can visit the ancient noble palaces, also purchased and renovated by
the Municipality and delivered to the city: Palazzo Feraudo and Palazzo
Sprovieri.
Entering the alleys of the ancient historic center you will encounter the
church of Santa Chiara, San Nicola di Belvedere, the birthplace of
Sant’Angelo, the monument to Giovanni Battista Falcone, a young acrese
who died at 22 in the Sapri expedition.
Going up towards the ancient district of Padula, in the square in front of the
church of Santa Maria Maggiore, you will find the Civitate palace on the wall
of which you can see wrought iron objects (the caggiarole) on which the
heads of three brigands who had kidnapped and caused the death of the
three children of the Civitate family.
On the top of the Padia district the civic tower with the ancient clock
dominates.
Acri is called "Porta della Sila" because the city introduces the visitor into the
wild and enchanting beauty of the Sila. The Mucone valley, rich in a great
variety of Mediterranean flora, the Sila plateau, the wonderful Sila Park, up to
Lake Cecita, the delicacies of local gastronomy with the processing products
of the many dairy farms, black pigs and of the numerous organic farming
companies constitute an attractive mix of culture, history and naturalistic
beauties that make the territory of Acri a place to visit and get to know.

The municipality is included in the
UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of the Sila

The MAB Programme develops the basis within the
natural and social sciences for the rational and
sustainable use and conservation of the resources of the
biosphere and for the improvement of the overall
relationship between people and their environment. It
predicts the consequences of today’s actions on
tomorrow’s world and thereby increases people’s ability to
efficiently manage natural resources for the well-being of
both human populations and the environment.
By focusing on sites internationally recognized within
the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, the MAB
Programme strives to:
 • identify and assess the changes in the
biosphere resulting from human and natural
activities and the effects of these changes on
humans and the environment, in particular in the
 context of climate change;
 • study and compare the dynamic
 interrelationships between natural/near-natural
 ecosystems and socio-economic processes, in
particular in the context of accelerated loss of
biological and cultural diversity with unexpected
consequences that impact the ability of
ecosystems to continue to provide services
 critical for human well-being;
 • ensure basic human welfare and a liveable
environment in the context of rapid urbanization
and energy consumption as drivers of
 environmental change;
 • promote the exchange and transfer of
 knowledge on environmental problems and
solutions, and to foster environmental education
 for sustainable development.

 PEOPLES CULTURES

 ENVIRONMENT

The origins
IT is one of the few Calabrian cities not to have been
founded by Greeks or Romans, by Bruzi or Lucanians.
The Osci were most likely the first inhabitants of what
we now know as Acri, as the historian Giuseppe
Abbruzzo (Acri, the origins - published by Archeoclub
d’Italia,
1987) claims. From Chaos to the first human settlements

irresistible entry on planet Earth. The Osci had brain
abilities very similar to those of modern man. They
were also quite evolved in language. In fact, they
spoke one of the many Indo-European languages and
knew how to use stones, bows and arrows. It is not
known how they arrived in Sila without leaving traces
of their journey from Campania and Lucania. What is
undeniable are the findings (axes, chisels, knives,
 scrapers, spears,

Recent history

IN the Middle Ages it had considerable importance.
It was besieged in vain in the war between the
Angevins and the Aragonese and then fell for
treason into the hands of the Aragonese. They were
of such ferocity that, in addition to setting fire to
many buildings, they came to saw the defender of
the city, Nicola Clancioffo, exposing the parts of the
body in the public square. In 1497 the city was
destroyed by the French and in 1799 it participated
in the revolutionary uprisings. In 1806, during the
reaction of the Sanfedisti, it suffered serious
consequences. Acri in 1820 took part in the Sapri
expedition with Battista Falcone who lost his life
and to whom the city dedicated a monument by the
sculptor Scerbo in 1888. Acri has been identified
with ancient Pandosia and also with ancient
Acheruntia. It is very likely that both assumptions
are wrong. Pandosia was probably located further
south, while Acheruntia is more likely to be today's
Cerenzia.

 The historical center

THERE are numerous well-preserved 18th century
buildings that give the city a very particular urban and
environmental aspect. The church of Santa Maria
Maggiore (in the photo below on the right), built on the
remains of another religious building, is of
Romanesque
foundation, but
many of its parts
were
transformed in
the 1700s.

school. This part is a succession of art treasures such
as those kept in the church of the Annunziata which
contains nineteenth-century frescoes by Raffaele
Aloisio and a beautiful carved wooden door shines at
the bottom of the right aisle. In the church of San
Nicola you can admire a 1600 painting on the ceiling
that depicts the Addolorata and Saints Nicholas and
Michael. Also marvelous is the church of San
Domenico embellished with a stone portal made up of
pieces of various origins and which preserves, in the
chapel of the Rosary, an altar in stucco with a

prolichrome mosaic and an eighteenth-century frontal.
In the church of Santa Caterina the visitor can delight
in admiring a wooden choir of local craftsmanship of
the XVIII century and some paintings of the same
period, among which one of the Madonna with Child
and saints by the painter Cristoforo Santanna of 1767
stands out. Some of these precious paintings are
unfortunately been stolen and never found. Finally, in
the Capuchin church, there is an interesting
Deposition, a wooden statue of the Assumption and
an 18th century alabaster group. We will talk more fully
in a separate section about the convent of
Sant’Angelo, annexed to the church. In this area
worthy of mention is Palazzo Feraudo where the
Museum of Rural Life is set up, which we will discuss
separately and Palazzo Sanseverino which houses the
MACA, Museum of Contemporary Art to which we
have dedicated a section. The Dodaro Palace, which
dates back to 1788 and which has undergone
considerable transformations over the years, is also of
considerable interest. Palazzo Julia dates back to the
early sixteenth century. Palazzo De Simone-Julia is a
particular example of architecture. Of one of the most
beautiful buildings, the Civitate, unfortunately only the
entrance door with the family crest remains.

 The Sanctuary of Sant’Angelo

The interior of the Basilica of Sant’Angelo d’Acri

L’EDIFICIO, al di là dei significati simbolici, è di
notevole pregio architettonico. I lavori furono iniziati
nel 1893 e la chiesa fu consacrata nel 1898. Un vero e
propio record.
Così come
 l’arco d’ingresso e l’aula. La volta ha ricche
decorazioni e i pilastri che la sostengono formano un
arco di trionfo meraviglioso. La cappella di
Sant’Angelo ha delle decorazioni bellissime che
circondano l’urna che contiene le spoglie del Santo.

 Sant’Angelo, defender of the weak

Fra Angelo d’Acri preferred to know life than to know glory

HE BECAME a priest in 1700 and about a year later he
had a preacher's license. Thus he began to travel
around the South, preaching and performing miracles.
His fame soon spread, but it took 25 years for the
Church of Rome to declare him an "apostolic
missionary". On the other hand, Fra Angelo did not
seek recognition and, in a Christian way, he preferred
to know life than to know glory. He did this "job" for 38

 The Peasant Civilization

THE exhibition rooms of the tools of the Peasant
Civilization are very well cared for and are arranged in
a very rational way. This facilitates the visit and makes
the experience interesting.
The Museum is housed in the Palazzo Feraudo (via
San Francesco di Paola) on the third floor. The other
two are occupied, one (the first), by the municipal
library, the other by the Padula Foundation.
The objects on display (they are many and well kept),
testify to the work, the fatigue, the hard life of the
peasants, but also the wealth that they have left to
future generations. Traditions, gastronomy, a way of
managing what you have to give everyone what they
need to survive. The farmers have bequeathed to us
the pride, the solidarity between women and men of
this small planet. They left us a world that we must
know how to preserve.
The Acri Museum is perfect for this purpose. Each tool
tells a story. From second-hand clothes, to baskets,
barrels, water bottles, locks, baskets, shopping bags,
flasks. Not to mention the lanterns and containers for
milk and the tax for ricotta.
It is a visit not to be missed from which the visitor will
come out with a very different awareness of the world
that will lead him to reflect on the destiny of humanity
which today appears uncertain and fragile.

 Few words, many colors
SILVIO Vigliaturo (Acri, 1949) moved at the age of
thirteen to Chieri, in the province of Turin, where, as a
shop boy, he approached glassmaking and, later,
thanks to the meeting with the master Luigi Bertagna,
he began his education in art and, in particular, in
painting. Vigliaturo's entire artistic and creative process
stems from the sign. Painting and sculpture are
treated, in their embryonic stages, in the same way by

ONCE THERE WAS a beautiful young girl, called
Agnes: the face a rose, the mouth a manna. Going and
returning from the fields, she heard sighing from every
man who walked behind her: "Oh Gnesa, oh Gnesa,
what an ass you have!" In Gnesa, hearing that song
every day, he wanted to see what made people sigh. It
passed through Pombio; there was none; the tub was
full; she lifts her skirt, goes down into the water, and
her ass was seen in her

mistress used to address
the servant who went to get water in this way: "Go for
the water and take care to fill the jar for Gnesa's ass".
According to Vito Teti, the "ass of Gnesa" «arises from
ignorance of the language and from erroneous
etymologies». According to Teti it is nothing more than
the translation from the Greek of «the pure basin», «the
clean basin». To confirm this, Teti recalls that Padula
wrote that his ancestors «were not unworthy of
descent from the Greeks». Teti writes that «the jar, the
water and the woman allude to purity, prolificacy,
rebirth». The “reading” given by Domenico Scafoglio is
different, according to which in the «denudation of
Gnesa, with its miraculous effects, a trace of pagan
rituals of rural denuding seems to survive, which were
to transmit fertility to the earth and drive out bad
influences».

 Walking

The walk of the bell towers

CHURCHES often represent the essence of a people,
their true identity and, even more often, they tell their
story. In them are kept splendid artistic treasures and
hidden rites and fears. The bell towers of Acri are an
integral part of the churches and each of them is
 different and magnificent.
 Beyond their meanings, what
 they represent, the message
 they deliver, they are of
 extraordinary beauty. Here we
propose just a few. The drawing
above shows the bell tower of
San Nicola al Belvedere, in the
photo on the left the bell tower
of the church of San Francesco
di Paola, in the one immediately
 below on

the church of the Santissima
Annunziata.
On the following page you will find the

It is possible to make the map interactive by clicking
on the appropriate globe symbol. If you want to use
the application, an Internet connection with
geolocation enabled is required. The interactive map
will allow you to get directions both by car and on
foot. It is simple and intuitive. In any case, we provide
instructions for use. Clicking on the globe opens a
web page. Clicking on the turquoise markers opens a
small window. Click on the wording "Get directions"
which appears in the lower left window, also in
turquoise. The page automatically moves to the field
where the chosen place appears. At this point click on
the symbol (gray circle) to the right of the first field.
The system enters your exact location. Now just
choose how to get there ("Guide" or "Walking") and
click on the "Go" button. The path that will take you to
your bell tower will appear.

 1 Food & Wine

The production of cured meats and cheeses in Acri is
very important, but above all it is of excellent quality.

THE CHEESES

La Sila is an ideal place for grazing cows and calves
that are left in the wild as they are destined to produce
cheeses. Ricotta, mozzarella, caciocavallo of various
types here are a total guarantee of genuineness.
The working cycle is guaranteed by the total respect of
hygiene rules and by the dedication of those who work
there.
Making cheese is hard work.
We get up at 4.30 in the morning to milk the cows and
the day goes on, managing the animals that are free to
roam wherever they like, but which must be closely
watched.
After the milking operations there is the bottling of the
milk which is sold in company outlets or ends up in
supermarkets, while another part is used to produce
various types of cheeses.

COLD CUTS

Don't miss to buy cold cuts from black pigs. Here in
Acri there are some farms that produce high quality
cured meats. The pigs are raised in the area and the
cured meats are always produced in Acri.
It starts with the spreadable ones ('nduja) to arrive at
white and red soppressate, sausage, capocollo,
pancetta, bacon, lard.
All with exclusive flavors.

Siluna Fest, the meaning of life

 ▶

 Pistoletto's Third Paradise video.

It is a young festival, born in 2018, but the theme is
ancient. It is that of inner well-being, respect for other
people and respect for the environment and for art.
This painting includes Michelangelo Pistoletto's
installation of the "Third Paradise" which was curated by
Giacinto Le Pera. It covers 75 meters long and 35 meters
wide, inside which 58 larch pine trees have been planted,
arranged as the symbol of the Third Paradise, drawn on
the mirror by Pistoletto himself in the photo below on the
right.
As you can see, it is the revised
 symbol of mathematical infinity
(∞). In the opinion of art critic
 Achille Bonito Oliva, the Third
 Paradise comes after that of
 unbridled technology which will
 continue to help mankind, but
 which will be more humanized.
The sign of infinity, according to
 Bonito Oliva, indicates an
 «umbilical centrality that outlines
the desire for a system of moral
 order and a balanced material
 development».
For the organizers of the festival, all this translates into
the recovery of spaces, reviving inanimate places,
respecting the environment.
In this way, living away from unbridled technology,
recovering the beauty of being together with other
people, life takes on a different meaning. Returning to
this way of life revives everyone's life, otherwise people
carry on their lives. A life that is, however, meaningless.
The appointment is in early August of each year.
Don't miss it. It's beautiful.

 Padula National Award

The archeology conference of the 2019 edition

THE Padula Prize, established in 2003 by the Padula
Foundation, has now become an important literary
event on a national level. The Prize is made up of
different sections: fiction, non-fiction, journalism,
international fiction and the “Vincenzo Talarico” section.
The students who form the People's Jury and choose

VINCENZO Padula (1819- 1893) was an
extraordinary priest. He did not just preach,
but he practiced his teachings by
defending people in need and fighting for
an ideal. He was a journalist, a man of
 letters and a patriot.
He fought against the landowners by claiming the right
of the peasants to a just recognition of their work,
wrote articles in the newspapers of the time, history
books and poems. He openly sided for the unification
of Italy and this cost him an ambush by some
assassins hired to kill him. In the riot his brother
Giacomo lost his life and he, wanted by the police, was
forced to flee. Since then he lived a life of hardship
which ended only with the expedition of the Thousand
and the unification of Italy when he was able to return
to his studies and teaching in Cosenza, Naples and the
University of Parma.

the winner of the Narrative section, participate in the
“best review“ competition.
The "Padula" takes place every year towards the end of
November and lasts 5 days between awards,
conferences and debates. In past editions, personalities
of the caliber of Ferruccio De Bortoli, Carlo Verdone,
Gustavo Zagrelbesky, Valentino Parlato, Andrea Di
Consoli have been awarded.

The genius loved by the goddesses

Elsa Martinelli and Vincenzo Talarico in Via Veneto in Rome in
the 1960s

VINCENZO Talarico to whom the Padula Foundation
has dedicated the international section of the literary
prize, was an acrese transplanted to Rome, a city that
the president of the Giuseppe Cristofaro Foundation
defines as his "second homeland". “Enzino” was an
important journalist, film critic and even actor. He
loved playing the role of lawyer in the many films that
were produced in abundance in courts and
magistrates in the 1950s and 1960s.
Talarico has assiduously frequented very important
personalities of cinema, culture and entertainment. He
was a friend of Anna Magnani, Marisa Merlini, Vittorio
De Sica, Mario Soldati, Leonida Repaci, Corrado
Alvaro, Tommaso Monicelli, Roberto Rossellini. He
played the part of the lawyer in many films with Totò
and Peppino, with Vittorio De Sica. Walter Veltroni
defines him as "one of the souls" of the "recent history
of Rome - he writes - in which the air of this city, its
atmosphere, was the result of an era that produced a
particular moment for cultural fervor, a season that it
was in one and for all, the fulfillment of a dream called
“dolce vita” ».
“Enzino” was a very lively intellectual and a very witty
critic. For this reason it was liked by actors, writers
and, above all, actresses writers such as Tana Weber,
Linuccia Saba, Anna Garofalo, Livia De Stefani, Elsa
Morante, Elsa Martinelli.
"Enzino" has been defined in many ways, but what
perhaps best represents him is the former regional
councilor for culture, Sandro Principe, who paints him
"a protean genius".
Oh yes, “Enzino” was a real genius.
