                           January 6, 2019

"I grasped the truth that the righteousness of God is that righteousness whereby,
through grace and sheer mercy, he justifies us by faith. Thereupon I felt myself to
be reborn and to have gone through open doors into paradise."

-Martin Luther (on his study of Romans)

Committed to God's Truth
We believe in a holy God who exists eternally in three persons – the Father, the
Son and the Holy Spirit. We believe the Bible is the written word of God, and we
hold to it as our authority in all matters of faith and life.

We believe all people are sinners, justly deserving God’s displeasure, and
incapable of saving themselves.

We believe that Jesus Christ – God the Son who became man – lived a sinless
life, died on the cross and rose again to accomplish our salvation. We receive
this gracious gift through faith alone.

We believe the Holy Spirit gives Christians the daily strength and wisdom they
need to walk according to His will and grow in holiness.

We believe that Jesus Christ will return to judge all mankind and to receive His
people unto Himself.
Copies of The Westminster Confession of Faith, Zion’s doctrinal standard, are available on the book table.

Welcome and Announcements

Entrance to Worship

Call to Worship Isaiah 12:4-6
And you will say in that day: "Give thanks to the LORD, call upon his name, make
known his deeds among the peoples, proclaim that his name is exalted. "Sing praises to
the LORD, for he has done gloriously; let this be made known in all the earth. Shout, and
sing for joy, O inhabitant of Zion, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel."

Confession of Faith: The Nicene Creed
I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all
things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God,
begotten of the Father before all worlds; God of God, Light of Light, very God of very
God; begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things
were made. Who, for us men and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was
incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified
also for us under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose

                                                  3
again, according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand
 of the Father; and He shall come again, with glory, to judge the quick and the dead;
whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver
of Life; who proceeds from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son
together is worshipped and glorified; who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one
 holy catholic and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins;
and I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayer of Praise

† Hymn of Praise
From All That Dwell Below the Skies (Trinity Hymnal #7)

Preparation for Confession Jeremiah 14:7, 20-21
Although our sins testify against us, O LORD, do something for the sake of your name.
For our backsliding is great; we have sinned against you. O LORD, we acknowledge our
wickedness and the guilt of our fathers; we have indeed sinned against you. For the
sake of your name do not despise us; do not dishonor your glorious throne. Remember
your covenant with us and do not break it.

Silent Confession of Sin

† Declaration of Grace Romans 8:1-4
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of
the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God
has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in
the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the
righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the
flesh but according to the Spirit.

                             Sermon Notes: January 6, 2019

AUTHOR: The Apostle Paul.
AUDIENCE: The church in the capitol of the Roman Empire, Rome.
DATE: About 57 AD.
CIRCUMSTANCES: Likely written while Paul was in Corinth on his 3rd missionary journey.
Since Paul had not been to Rome personally to teach them, he writes his most thorough
explanation of the gospel, the Christian life, and key issues of controversy.
THEMES: Salvation by faith in Christ alone; the sovereignty of God; a complete and systematic
explanation of the gospel; handling controversy in the Church; practical issues of the
   Christian life.

1. What is Paul’s Calling?

2. What is Paul’s Prayer?

3. What is Paul’s Theme?

                                              6
Romans 1:1-17
Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 2 which
he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3 concerning his Son,
who was descended from David according to the flesh 4 and was declared to be the Son of
God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus
Christ our Lord, 5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the
obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, 6 including you who are
called to belong to Jesus Christ,
7To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints:
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is proclaimed in
all the world. 9 For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son,
that without ceasing I mention you 10 always in my prayers, asking that somehow by God's
will I may now at last succeed in coming to you. 11 For I long to see you, that I may impart to
you some spiritual gift to strengthen you-- 12 that is, that we may be mutually encouraged by
each other's faith, both yours and mine. 13 I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that I
have often intended to come to you (but thus far have been prevented), in order that I may
reap some harvest among you as well as among the rest of the Gentiles. 14 I am under obliga-
tion both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish. 15 So I am eager to
preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.
16For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who
believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed
from faith for faith, as it is written, "The righteous shall live by faith."

                            Questions for Further Discussion:
 What do we learn about the person and work of Jesus in the first six verses?
 What sets apart this letter? What makes it differ from Paul’s other letters?
 Where do you appear to see the theme of this letter in today’s text? How would
you put that theme into one short sentence?
 Charles Hodge wrote that “nothing is more clearly taught in the Scriptures than
that no man in himself is righteous in the sight of God.” We will see this in Ro-
mans. What are some other memorable passages that emphasize this?

Escape into Egypt, He Qi, Advent in Art Series
"Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise,
take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search
for the child, to destroy him.” And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to
Egypt and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the
prophet, 'Out of Egypt I called my son.' “

The Mission of Zion Church
By God’s grace Zion Church will be a Christ-centered ministry committed to worship God
by proclaiming the truth of Scripture and relating to one another on the basis of the
transforming power of the Gospel. As God’s people living in community, we will equip
one another to pour out our lives for Christ at home, in the city, on the campus, across the
Midwest, and to the ends of the earth. This vision rests upon the supernatural work of
Christ who alone can build His church through the Spirit’s work in our lives together.
