WORSHIP AT KING OF KINGS DURING A PANDEMIC
                           Updated June 15, 2021
In response to the CDC’s most recent recommendations for controlling the COVID-19 global
pandemic, King of Kings has made updated our worship practice as follows:
 All of the liturgies, songs, lessons, and such will be included in slides on the screen. There
are larger print bulletins at the back of the Worship Center for those with visual impairments.
 We have had surfaces sanitized building-wide with a product that kills germs on contact for
    thirty days.
 If not vaccinated, please consider wearing a mask while in the building.
 There is a basket at the back of the Worship Center for your offering.

St. Paul urges us to examine ourselves before partaking of Holy Communion (1 Cor. 1:28). We
urge you to do so, on the basis of these questions.
  1. Do you believe you are a sinner? (Romans 3:23)
  2. Are you truly sorry for your sins? (Psalm 51:17)
  3. Do you believe in Jesus Christ as your Savior? (Romans 5:6-8)
  4. Do you intend with the power of the Holy Spirit, to amend your sinful life?
       (Romans 6:1-4)
  5. Do you believe you receive Christ’s true Body and Blood along with the blessed
bread and wine for the forgiveness of your sins?
In the Lutheran Church, Holy Communion, is considered a public confession of our common
faith. If you are a visitor unfamiliar with the teachings of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod,
out of respect for your own faith tradition, we invite you to receive a blessing. Place your right
hand over your heart with your head bowed to receive a blessing.
Prelude “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”
“The Church’s One Foundation (sermon hymn tune)”

Preparation for Confession “Lord, I Need You”
Lord I come I confess: bowing here, I find my rest.
Without You I fall apart – You’re the one that guides my heart.
Lord, I need You, oh, I need You; ev’ry hour I need You.
My one defense, my righteousness – oh, God, how I need You.
Where sin runs deep, Your grace is more. Where grace is found is where You are.
And where You are, Lord, I am free: holiness is Christ in me.
Lord, I need You, oh, I need You; ev’ry hour I need You.
My one defense, my righteousness – oh, God, how I need You.
So teach my song to rise to You when temptation comes my way.
And when I cannot stand I’ll fall on You. Jesus, You’re my hope and stay.
Lord, I need You, oh, I need You; ev’ry hour I need You.
My one defense, my righteousness – oh, God, how I need You.
You’re my one defense, my righteousness – oh, God, how I need You.
…My one defense, my righteousness – oh, God, how I need…… You.

Confession and Absolution
P Yes, the Lord reigns over every nation, language, and people. Yet, we have not
loved all people as Christ has loved us. The fruits of our faith are not always evident.
But our Lord is gracious and merciful, and He offers His forgiveness to all.
P Heavenly Father,
C we have failed to love others as You love them. We have failed to reflect
Your grace to the world in service and sacrifice. We have failed in our
actions and in our unwillingness to act. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us,
so that we may follow You in joy. Amen.
P Almighty God in His mercy sent Jesus Christ into our world to serve and save all
people, showing no partiality or favoritism. By His death, He forgives all our sins. By
His resurrection, He destroys death forever and offers us eternal life. Therefore, as a
called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I forgive you all your sins
in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.

Salutation and Prayer of the Day
P The Lord be with you.
C And also with you.
P Let us pray together:
C O Lord, let Your merciful ears be open to the prayers of Your humble
servants and grant that what they ask may be in accord with Your
gracious will; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and
reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Preparation to Hear the Scriptures “Ancient Words”
Holy words long preserved for our walk in this world.
They resound with God’s own heart. Oh, let the ancient words impart.
Words of life, words of hope, give us strength, help us cope.
In this world where - e’er we roam, ancient words will guide us home.
Ancient words, ever true, changing me and changing you,
We have come with open hearts, O, let the ancient words impart.
Holy words of our faith handed down to this age,
Came to us through sacrifice. O, heed the faithful words of Christ.
Holy words long preserved for our walk in this world,
They resound with God’s own heart. O, let the ancient words impart.
Ancient words, ever true, changing me and changing you,
We have come with open hearts, O, let the ancient words impart.
We have come with open hearts, O, let the ancient words impart.

Old Testament Lesson 1 Samuel 12:19–25
19
And all the people said to Samuel, “Pray for your servants to the LORD your God, that we
may not die, for we have added to all our sins this evil, to ask for ourselves a king.” 20And
Samuel said to the people, “Do not be afraid; you have done all this evil. Yet do not turn
aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart. 21And do not turn
aside after empty things that cannot profit or deliver, for they are empty. 22For the LORD will
not forsake his people, for his great name’s sake, because it has pleased the LORD to make
you a people for himself. 23Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against
the LORD by ceasing to pray for you, and I will instruct you in the good and the right way.
24
Only fear the LORD and serve him faithfully with all your heart. For consider what great
things he has done for you. 25But if you still do wickedly, you shall be swept away, both you
and your king.”
R This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.

Epistle Lesson James 5:13–18
13
Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. 14Is
anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over
him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15And the prayer of faith will save the
one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be
forgiven. 16Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you
may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. 17Elijah
was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for
three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. 18Then he prayed again, and heaven
gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit.
R This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.

The Holy Gospel Luke 11:1-13
P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the eleventh chapter.
C Glory to You, O Lord.
1
Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to
him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” 2And he said to them, “When you
pray, say:
“Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. 3Give us each day our
daily bread, 4and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who
is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.”

The Holy Gospel (continued) Luke 11:1-13
5
And he said to them, “Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to
him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, 6for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have
nothing to set before him’; 7and he will answer from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door is
now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything’? 8I
tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet
because of his impudence he will rise and give him whatever he needs. 9And I tell you, ask,
and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10For
everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will
be opened. 11What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him
a serpent; 12or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13If you then, who are evil,
know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give
the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C Praise to You, O Christ.

Children's Message

Sermon Hymn “In Holy Conversation”
                                                           (Tune: “The Church’s One Foundation”)
In holy conversation we speak to God in prayer,
And at His invitation our deepest thoughts we share.
                    We come, His will obeying, as children bringing needs;
And to support our praying, His Spirit intercedes.
                     These holy conversations begin in childlike ways;
We bring our supplications and words of thanks and praise.
With care our Father listens to ev’ry thought expressed,
Then answers our petitions in ways He knows are best.
As holy conversation, in silence or by word,
In ev’ry situation through Jesus, we are heard.
So let us pray securely, expressing hopes and fears
With confidence that surely our Father ever hears.

Hymn of Response “Lord, Help Us Walk Your Servant Way”
Lord, help us walk Your servant way
                                       Wherever love may lead
                                  And, bending low, forgetting self,
                                     Each serve the other’s need.
You came to earth, O Christ, as Lord,
                                      But pow’r You laid aside.
                                You lived Your years in servanthood;
                                        In lowliness You died.
No golden scepter but a towel
                                      You place within the hands
Of those who seek to follow You
                                     And live by Your commands.
You bid us bend our human pride
                                     Nor count ourselves above
The lowest place, the meanest task
That waits the gift of love.

Nicene Creed
C I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and
of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of
His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very
God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by
whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came
down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary
and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He
suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the
Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the
Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the
dead, whose kingdom will have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds
from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is
worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one
holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the
remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of
         the world to come. Amen.

Preface
P The Lord be with you.
C And also with you.
P Lift up your hearts.
C We lift them to the Lord.
P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
C It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

Proper Preface
P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give
thanks to You, Lord, our God. You call us to be Your people and invite us to bring
our cares to You in prayer. You did so love the world that You sent Your only Son to
be our Redeemer. By His sacrificial life and death and glorious resurrection, He has
brought us salvation and has shown us the path to life eternal. Pour upon us now
the gift of the Holy Spirit that we may receive the body and blood of our Lord with
true devotion in this sacred fellowship of Your pilgrim people. Grant us a foretaste of
the feast to come, heavenly Father, that with increased faith we joyfully await a
blessed eternity in Your glorious presence.
C Amen.

The Lord's Prayer
C Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily
bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass
against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For
Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever.
      Amen.

                                                                                       Page 7

Participation in Holy Communion
St. Paul urges us to examine ourselves before partaking of Holy Communion (1 Cor. 1:28). It
is only right that we first recognize our sin before receiving God’s grace in this holy meal. In
the Lutheran Church, Holy Communion, is considered a public confession of our common
faith. If you are a visitor unfamiliar with the teachings of the Lutheran Church-Missouri
Synod, out of respect for your own faith tradition, we invite you to receive a blessing. Place
your right hand over your heart with your head bowed to receive a blessing.

Distribution Hymn “What a Friend we Have in Jesus”
What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer!
Have we trials and temptations, is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged, take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful, who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness, take it to the Lord in prayer.
Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge, take it to the Lord in prayer.
              Do thy friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer;
In His arms He’ll take and shield thee; thou wilt find a solace there.

         through the same in faith toward You           and in fervent love toward one another;

Who has the power to raise the dead?
And who can save us from our sin?
He is our hope, our righteousness: Jesus, only Jesus.
Who can make the blind to see?
Who holds the keys that set us free?
He paid it all to bring us peace: Jesus, only Jesus.
                                      Holy King Almighty, Lord:
                                    Saints and angels all adore.
We join with them and bow before Jesus, only Jesus.
Who can command the highest praise?
Who has the name above all names?
You stand alone, I stand amazed. Jesus, only Jesus.
                                      Holy King Almighty, Lord:
                                    Saints and angels all adore.
We join with them and bow before Jesus, only Jesus.
You will command the highest praise.
Yours is the Name above all names!
You stand alone, I stand amazed. Jesus, only Jesus. Jesus, only Jesus.
