PRESIDENT’S CORNER
Hello Members,
February is gone already, and it seems to
have taken the too hot weather with it.
Cricket has been exciting but very
inconsistent by the Blackcaps. Some will be
pleased to see the Super Rugby back on
our screens. It’s been a good start to the
season for both South Island Teams.
There are a couple promotions going at the moment; in the
Club Café we’ve restarted the Lionel Richie promo now that a
new date has been set for his show. Any prior entries have been
included into the draw box.
In conjunction with Lion breweries, we will be giving away 5
Double Passes to the popular Foster & Allen concert at the Issac
Theatre Royal in April.
We celebrate St Patricks Day on Friday 16th & Saturday 17th of
March this year. The club will feature Irish Café specials,
Guinness cans & Jameson RTD’s and good music in the
Westview Lounge. We look forward to seeing everyone in their
festive attire!
We will be showing the upcoming Parker fight on April 1st, and
because of its early start time have decided to offer a breakfast
buffet for a very reasonable $15. You can get your ticket at the
office now. Due to it also being Easter weekend, we may even
have a few baskets to add to our usual raffles.
Regards, Kevin Cole

CARDS
Hi to everyone- Our Euchre Card Section nights are back into full swing for the
year. We started off with our opening social BBQ night with a very tasty meal.
Then we played a few games of bingo/housie, which everyone enjoyed. Any
winning lines got a cake or chocolate, a house would take a meat tray! To
finish off we had a few quick fire games of euchre. Something different for our
opening night again this year.
March 2018 - Hornby Working Men's Club
The next week was normal euchre
night and 3rd week was our annual Eric
Pycroft Trophy night (Men vs Ladies).
We had 50 members playing with
supper to finish off the social fun night.
And shall we say, that the men took the
trophy title again, 308 compared to 280
                                        for ladies. Well done men!
Now back to normal Thursday night
Euchre nights, upstairs in the Function Room, starting at 7.30pm.
On Saturday 10th March, we will be having a section 6 handed tournament.
Please check our card notice board for details.
March 2018 - Hornby Working Men's Club
We also have a team of 8 players travelling up to Blenheim to play in the Clubs
NZ South Island Euchre Tournament on Sunday 4th March. We have a few
hours travel inland to maybe practice on the way.
Any new members please feel free to come and join in for a couple of nights if
you wish for a start. Thursday nights at 7.30pm.
Regards, Lorraine Cole

CRIB
It has been great to welcome back all our players for 2018.
The tables were full with 36 players on the first night back. The cards have
been competitive which makes for an enjoyable Wednesday night. We are
holding the New Zealand National Champs at Hornby in April with a large
number of our players committing to play in this Tournament. This is
encouraging and shows our weekly competition is providing our players
confidence to flourish at this level. Good luck to you all and we look forward
to some great results.
During February we hosted a Crib Pairs tournament for members from all the
Christchurch Clubs. 68 Players again showed their abilities around the Crib
board. Well done to our Friends at Papanui for claiming 1st prize with a
marvellous 32 points. 2nd went to Marie and Derek on 31 points with 3rd to
Ann and James on 30 points, both locals.
Finally thanks to Rose and her Team for arranging all our raffles, the
Wednesday’s downstairs and upstairs raffle and the Friday night Scratches,
which is fundraising to help host the NZ Nationals. The support we receive
from you all is fantastic and really makes a difference to our section. We wish
you good luck and thank you all!
All the best - The Cribbage Crew
DARTS
It’s time for the 50th South Island champs. Hornby held the first championship
right here in the old back bar and now we travel to Oamaru 50 years on. 28th of
Feb is the mixed pairs. The 1st of March is the Ladies and Mens pairs, and
Friday 2nd is the Ladies singles. Saturday has the Mens singles followed by the
presentation; we currently hold the mixed & aggregate trophies and look
forward to maybe holding on to them.
If anyone wants to play Darts this winter, they should contact the darts section
ASAP, ask for Maata or JP.

GOLF
The club recently sponsored a team entry to the Legends of Golf Pro Am
held at Russley Club. Brent Mackey, Matt Lernihan, & Tony Voice happily

enjoyed a morning tee off, and even met Melbourne Australian Pro, Ben
Jackson. The guys would like to thank the club for a great day.
All the best, Steve

OUTDOOR BOWLS
The February bowls section match was played at Bowls Hornby with a
theme of “State of Origin”. The weather was great, but a wee bit windy,
the green run very well and the added colour of the player’s strips made an
enjoyable day for all. Once again we thank Bowls Hornby for the use of
their excellent facilities. After the two games we had two, two winners
with the John Bowley skipped team, Fay Pedersen, Frances Streetley and
Ian Smith winning by points difference over Dick Wragg’s skipped team,
John Cowan, Lois Cowan and Leona Williams.
Our next game is at Bowls Hornby - report at 12 noon, 25th of March. We
are always looking for new members, contact numbers and section
information on upcoming games can be found on our notice board in the
main bar of the Club.

MIDWEEK BOWLS
After a very successful 2017, the New Year has rolled off to a very
pleasing start. We opened again on 16 January with a very good
number of players and supporters for the first day. We held a BBQ on
27 February, and other activities such as mystery trips and fun days
will take place during the year.
Our policy has always been “friendly bowls” and that’s our objective
for the coming year. New members are always welcome.
Regards, Tony McBride

FISHING
Well here we are at the start of autumn, where did our summer go?
Alas, the summer we did have was not kind to the trout and
salmon fishers, with the seemingly continual high temperatures
(water temp above 70F in Benmore over the past weeks) taking
the fish very low in the lakes and high winds making conditions
unpleasant for boat fishing and darn near impossible for fly-
fishing. However, members I have talked to have reported some
good catches of trout and landlocked salmon.
On the horizon we have the South Island Clubs NZ Trout
Tournament, being run by the Cromwell Club, coming up over the
weekend of March 23rd & 24th. Also don’t forget the Jack Elcock
@ Lake Brunner on the 13th & 14th of April.
Would all section members and intending members please pencil
our AGM date, 18th April, in your diaries. Don’t forget that our
meetings are held on the first Wednesday of the month at the Club,
all Club member are welcome to come along.

TRAVEL
Race and Gala day at Hurunui
This was a very well supported day, with 40 people attending.
It was a great day out, and full credit to the organisers of this event.
A big thank you has been extended to them, for looking out for us, by
responding to request for cover with the fabulous gazebo that had
enough room for almost all to sit inside. The generous help from
Kevin and board members in supplying us with tables, ice and general
help was also much appreciated.
The day was fun, with trotting, galloping races including Clydesdales.
Horse racing for the young ones as well, along with tug of war and
just general fun events. Excellent food stalls and bars available,
although I think most of ours decided to BYO.
Next events
Well after months of planning, Napier is now just around the corner.
When this goes to print it will be just over two weeks until 23 of us
depart. For those of you attending you should have all received your
itineraries by now. I am holding the airline tickets to enable the group
booking, but the suitcase labels all have to be sorted so please ensure
you are no later than 8am to meet at the check in foyer at airport. The
check in luggage allowance is 23kg with hand luggage 7kg.
If any of you have any questions at all please do not hesitate to call
me.
                       Wednesday, April 18th 2018
A booking has been made to visit the Kate Valley Landfill in Hurunui
area. One of the employees at the Landfill will board our coach and
explain how the landfill and recycling works. This will be followed by
a presentation.
We will then have lunch at the Waipara Springs vineyard with
tastings, followed by further tastings at Waipara Hills vineyard.
This is still in the planning stage so no cost available yet, but keep an
eye on the notice board.
Next meeting in the Alpine Room 7pm Monday 19th March

Warm regards, Lyn Wright

A huge thank you to those that helped at our Old Timers Christmas Party back

great. Seeing the smile on all the oldies makes it really worthwhile. If it was
