Mary, Mother of our Lord
August 15, 2021Mary, Mother of our Lord August 15, 2021
The church (including Martin Luther) honored Mary with the title “theotokos” meaning "God-
bearer," for her role in giving birth to the Son of God. Her song, what we call the Magnificat in
Luke’s gospel, speaks eloquently of God's lifting the lowly and feeding the hungry. Mary's role is not
limited to giving birth to Jesus and mothering him in his childhood. In John's gospel, she is among
the women standing near the cross; in Acts, she is among the disciples awaiting the gift of the Spirit.
Through all that happened she continued to see how God was at work through her son, keeping the
ancient promises to her ancestors, brushing aside the rich and powerful, and focusing on those as
poor and powerless as Mary herself.

Prelude “Festival Alleluia” – arr. Dan Miller
Bell & Announcements
*Opening Hymn "Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones"
2*Confession and Forgiveness
In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen
God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning us from sin to
live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we may confess our sin,
receive your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and
Lord.
Amen
Silence for personal reflection
Gracious God,
have mercy on us. We confess that we have turned from you and given
ourselves into the power of sin. We are truly sorry. In your compassion
forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things done and things we have
failed to do. Turn us again to you, and lift us up by your Spirit, so that we
may be freed to live and serve you in newness of life through Jesus Christ
our Savior and Lord. Amen
God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive
together with Christ. By grace we have been saved. In the name of Jesus Christ, our
sins are forgiven. Almighty God strengthen us with power through the Holy Spirit, that
Christ may live in our hearts through faith. (Ephesians 2:4-5, 3:16-17)
Amen
3*Greeting & Prayer of the Day
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit
be with you all. (2 Corinthians 13:13)
And also with you.
Almighty God, in choosing the virgin Mary to be the mother of your Son, you made known
your gracious regard for the poor, the lowly, and the despised. Grant us grace to
receive your word in humility, and so to be made one with your Son, Jesus Christ our
Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and
forever.
Amen
WE HEAR GOD’S WORD
First Reading Isaiah 61:7–11
7
Because their shame was double, and dishonor was proclaimed as their lot, therefore
they shall possess a double portion; everlasting joy shall be theirs.
8
For I the LORD love justice, I hate robbery and wrongdoing; I will faithfully give them
their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.
9
Their descendants shall be known among the nations, and their offspring among the
peoples; all who see them shall acknowledge that they are a people whom the LORD
has blessed.
10
I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my whole being shall exult in my God; for he has
clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of
righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns
herself with her jewels.
11
For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to
spring up, so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all
the nations.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Psalmody – The Magnificat Luke 1:46-55
46
And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, 47and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant.
Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
49for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name.
50
His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation.
51He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the
thoughts of their hearts.
52
He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly;
53he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty.
54
He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy,
55according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to
his descendants forever."
4Second Reading Galatians 4:4–7
4
But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born
under the law, 5in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might
receive adoption as children. 6And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of
his Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" 7So you are no longer a slave but a
child, and if a child then also an heir, through God.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
*Gospel Acclamation
5*Gospel Reading Luke 1:26-38
The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the 1st chapter.
Glory to you, O Lord.
26
In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called
Nazareth, 27 to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of
David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And he came to her and said, “Greetings,
favored one! The Lord is with you.” 29 But she was much perplexed by his words and
pondered what sort of greeting this might be. 30 The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid,
Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And now, you will conceive in your womb
and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will be great, and will be called the
Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor
David. 33 He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be
no end.” 34 Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” 35 The angel
said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will
overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of
God. 36 And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and
this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. 37 For nothing will be
impossible with God.” 38 Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be
with me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.
The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

6Refrain - ALL
7*Confession of Faith – Nicene Creed
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and
earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally
begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God
from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he
came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he
became incarnate from the virgin Mary, and was made man. For
our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death
and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with
the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right
hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living
and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds
from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is
worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to
come. Amen
*Prayers of the Church
Each petition ends
Lord, in your mercy,

*Sharing of the Peace
The peace of the Lord be with you always
And also with you.
(Please greet one another with the words “Peace be with you.”)
8Musical Offering “Mary Did You Know?” – Lowry, Greene, arr. J. Schrader
Mark Erbskorn, Adam Grisier, Zach Basselman, Steve Basselman
Mary, did you know that your baby boy would one day walk on water?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy would save our sons and daughters?
Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you new?
This child that you delivered will soon deliver you.
Mary, did you know that your baby boy will give sight to a blind man?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy will calm the storm with His hand?
Did you know that your baby boy has walked where angels trod?
When you kiss your little baby, you kiss the face of God!
The blind will see, the deaf will hear, the dead will live again.
The lame will leap, the dumb will speak the praises of the lamb.
Mary, did you know that your baby boy is Lord of all creation?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy will one day rule the nations?
Did you know that your baby boy is heaven's perfect lamb?
This sleeping child you're holding is the great I AM.
9WE SHARE IN THE MEAL
*The Thanksgiving
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts!
We lift them to the Lord. (Lamentations 3:41)
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise. (2 Thessalonians 1:3)
*Eucharistic Prayer
Holy God, Creator of all and Source of life, at the birth of time your word brought light
into the world. In the fullness of time, you sent your Word, born of Mary, to shine in
our darkness and to make us your sons and daughters.
In the night in which he was betrayed,
our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;
broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:
Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,
and gave it for all to drink, saying:
This cup is the new covenant in my blood,
shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.
Do this for the remembrance of me.
For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s
death until he comes. (2 Corinthians 11:23-26)
Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
May all who share in the body and blood of Christ be filled with blessing and grace,
receive the forgiveness of sin and be formed to live as your holy people.
To you, O God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory in your holy
church, now and forever.
Amen
* The Lord's Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and
forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and
lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
