Sculptures highlight Project Reef Life
A series of sculptures atop poles

project.
The Pātea Pou Project is a
series of iconic silhouettes on
Pātea Golf Club land on the road
down to Mana Bay.
It celebrates the diversity of
the ocean and also raises aware-
ness of the award-winning Proj-
ect Reef Life, which has been
studying a previously unknown
reef, 11 kilometres off the South
Taranaki coast, since 2015.
Karen Pratt, from Project Reef
Life, teamed up with Michaela
Stoneman, arts co-ordinator at
the South Taranaki District
Council, to brainstorm ideas for a
new project to raise awareness of
their research.
Students from Pātea Area
School – some who were already
involved with Project Reef Life
research – helped design the
sculptures, which feature wildlife
from the local ocean environ-
ment.
There is also a diver, to recog-
nise the voluntary work of the
South Taranaki Underwater
Club, through which Project Reef
Life is run.
The preliminary designs were
