Course of Studies - Contents and Objectives
The Modern China programme leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts (BA, 180 ECTS credits) is offered
by the Faculty of Arts, Historical, Philological, Cultural and Geographical Studies of JMU in the framework
of a consecutive Bachelor’s/Master’s model as a course focussing on the fundamental principles of the
discipline.
Students who graduated from this programme
• have developed intermediate spoken and written language skills in Modern Standard Chinese;
• are able to understand the main points made in complex texts about both concrete and abstract
issues; are able to follow discussions including, but not limited to, discussions about issues
that are relevant to their field of specialisation;
• are able to interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that allows them to engage in real-
life conversations with native speakers without much strain for either partner;
• are able to express ideas on a wide range of topics in a clear and detailed manner, to give their
opinion about a topical issue as well as to discuss the pros and cons of different options;
• are able to use general research methods in Chinese studies and have an advanced
understanding of at least one subfield or field at the interface of Chinese studies and related
disciplines;
• have developed a broad and integrated knowledge and are able to evaluate and contextualise
general political and societal developments in modern China;
• have developed an advanced knowledge in one field of their choosing (politics, history,
economy, culture, literature, intellectual history, religion or the media);
• have spent a semester in China, where they have been immersed in the Chinese culture and
have enhanced their language skills;
• are able to develop new solutions to problems raised by current developments in China and to
evaluate those problems, taking into account different points of view;
• are able to define, reflect upon and evaluate objectives of learning and work processes as well
as to independently develop sustainable learning and work processes.

The module consists of two courses that address various contemporary issues. As China's development has be-
en of high intensity for more than thirty years, this module allows for the introduction of up to date topical issues
beyond a specific determination of content. The module introduces recent trends in China's society, politcs and
economy and emplifies them with specific case studies. Basic knowledg of China's recent history and political
structure are prerequisites for this module.
Intended learning outcomes
The module provides students with the competence to develop and analyze recent topical issues relating to Chi-
na's societal, political and economic development by accessing relevant sources. The competences acquired wi-
thin this module prepare especially for the writing of the Bachelor thesis.

Unmittelbar auf den Kenntnisstand der Studierenden aufbauen werden ausgewählte lebens- und berufsprakti-
schen Themen (Bildung, Kultur, Medizin, Verwaltung, Werbung, Peking) erschlossen, die mündliche Ausdrucks-
fähigkeit wird intensiviert und erweitert. Dazu werden mündliche Vorträge in chinesischer Sprache eingeübt und

Das Modul setzt sich aus zwei Lehrveranstaltungen zusammen, die einen Überblick über die Kulturgeschich-
te Chinas im 20. und 21. Jh. geben, wobei ein Schwerpunkt auf dem Bereich der bildenden Künste liegt. Die Er-
schließung kultureller Bereiche, Inhalte und Diskussionen sowie deren Wechselwirkung mit der politischen und
sozialen Geschichte bilden den Rahmen. Dabei soll die Einteilung der Themen auf den Zeitraum bis zur Grün-
dung der VR China, der Epoche vor den Reformen sowie bis 1989 einen Vergleich ermöglichen. Der zeitgenössi-
sche Zeitraum wird in der Veranstaltung "Kulturelle Moderne" behandelt. Epochen und Brüche in der Entwick-
lung werden anhand von theoretischen Diskursen und exemplarischen Beispielen erschlossen. Das Modul rich-
tet sich an Studierende in der zweiten Hälfte des Studiums.

Das Modul besteht aus der Vorlesung "Chinas Literaturtradition" und dem Seminar "Moderne Literatur Chinas".
Die Vorlesung "Chinas Literaturtradition" bietet einen literaturgeschichtlichen Überblick vom 3. bis 18. Jahrhun-
dert. Anhand von herausragenden Einzeltexten und -autoren führt sie in die wichtigsten Epochen, Gattungen,
Themen und Darstellungskonventionen, aber auch in relevante Kontexte ein. Das Seminar "Moderne Literatur
Chinas" befasst sich mit der chinesischen Literatur vom späten 19. bis ins 21. Jahrhundert. Dieser Teil behandelt
ebenfalls eine repräsentative Auswahl an Texten, widmet sich aber noch vermehrt der Vertiefung und der inter-
pretatorischen Arbeit am Text. Die gesellschaftlichen, politischen und kulturpolitischen Zusammenhänge wer-
den ausführlich thematisiert.

Das Modul besteht aus einer Einführung in das chinawissenschaftliche Arbeiten sowie drei Seminararbeiten. Auf
der Grundlage der Einführung in das chinawissenschaftliche Arbeiten und in Anbindung an belegte Seminare
sind drei Seminararbeiten zu erstellen. Diese sollen eine mit den Dozenten abgesprochene angemessene Frage-
stellung behandeln, die mit Hilfe von wissenschaftlicher Literatur in angemessenem Umfang und unter Berück-
sichtigung methodischer Aspekte schlüssig, stringent und nachvollziehbar bearbeitet wird. Im Seminar erfolgt
eine Einführung in die praktischen Fertigkeiten der Erstellung von wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten, der Vorbereitung
von Referaten, der Erschließung von Themenbereichen, des Bibliographierens; ferner sinologischer Methoden
und Themen wie der Methodendiskussion in der Sinologie, aktueller Tendenzen, der Schulung des kritischen
Umgangs mit wissenschaftlicher Literatur und der Erschließung wissenschaftlicher Zeitschriften.

In diesem Modul werden berufspraktische Inhalte insbesondere hinsichtlich der Sprachkompetenz im wirt-
schaftlichen Bereich erschlossen und eingeübt. Inhalte aus der wirtschaftlichen Praxis werden anhand situati-
ver Beispiele der Verhandlungstechnik und Gesprächspraxis in Wort und Schrift präsentiert und eingeübt. Ferner

Das Modul umfasst zwei Lehrveranstaltungen zur chinesischen Zeitgeschichte. In der Vorlesung zur neuesten
Geschichte Chinas (ab 1990) erhalten die Studierenden einen zeithistorischen Überblick zu den wichtigsten Er-
eignissen in Politik, Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft. Dieser bildet die Grundlage für vertiefende Lehrveranstaltun-
gen in anderen Modulen. Der zweite Bestandteil des Moduls ist ein Seminar zu Greater China, welches die histo-
rischen, politischen und gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen Taiwans, Hongkongs und Singapurs behandelt. Die-

The modul discusses in two terms two different epochs and/or different schools of China's premodern or modern
intellectual history. Students learn about intellectual positions, arguments, terminology and reference systems
of the respective schools of thougth and epochs based on original texts in translation. An introduction into ex-
emplary fields of Chinese intellectual history is provided. As terminology is also dealt with in Chinese language,
basic knowledge of Chinese is highly recommended.

The module discusses in two courses China's ongoing process of societal modernization and its various challen-
ges. On the one hand it offers an historical overview of typical issues of societal challenges such as ethnic mi-
nority policies or social (protest and democracy) movements. On the other hand students can intensify specific

Das Modul besteht aus zwei Teilen, einer "Einführung in die Hilfsmittel der Sinologie" und einer "Einführung in
die Schriftkunde". Die Einführung in sinologische Hilfsmittel und Arbeitsweisen vermittelt den Studierenden zu
Beginn ihres Studiums durch intensives Üben die Grundlagen und Möglichkeiten westlicher und chinesischspra-
chiger lexikalischer und digitaler Ressourcen. Die "Einführung in die Schriftkunde" strebt die Verbesserung der

Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Interaktion Japans mit China und anderen Nachbarstaaten in Ostasien. Im Inten-

An den Erwerb der Grundlagen der chinesischen Sprache anknüpfend werden die grammatikalischen Kenntnis-
se in Theorie und Praxis erschlossen und durch Textanalyse vertieft. Hierzu werden ausgewählte Texte im An-
schluss an das Lehrmaterial exemplarisch und gezielt eingesetzt und eine praxisorientierte Analyse grammati-
scher Sprachstrukturen eingeübt. Die Aktivierung der schriftlichen Ausdrucksfähigkeit sowie gezielte Überset-
zungsübungen ins Chinesische verfolgen das Ziel der Anwendung und Konsolidierung der erlernten grammati-
schen Erscheinungen und die Verstärkung der Übersetzungsfähigkeit insbesondere vom Deutschen ins Chinesi-
sche.

Die Studierenden verfügen über eine systematische textorientierte Kenntnis der grammatikalischen Grundstruk-
turen, über grundlegende Übersetzungsfähigkeit, über die Fähigkeit zur Wiedergabe von Texten, die inhaltlich
und stilistisch an das Lehrmaterial angelehnt sind, sowie über die Fähigkeit selbständig Satzgefüge zu formu-
lieren. Ferner verfügen sie über ein am Lehrmaterial orientiertes Hörverständnis. Der Wortschatz wird auf eine
Schriftzeichenkenntnis von ca. 700 aufgebaut.

Die Studierenden erweitern ihren Wortschatz und die grammatischen Sprachkenntnissen. Neben den passiv ge-
kannten Wortschatz erreichen die aktiv gekannten Schriftzeichen ca. 1000. Die Befähigung zur Wiedergabe von
Texten, die inhaltlich und stilistisch an das Lehrmaterial angelehnt sind, sowie das selbständige Formulieren
von Satzgefügen wird in Vorbereitung auf den integrierten und obligatorischen Auslandsaufenthalt an der Peking
Universität in lerntechnischer und methodischer Hinsicht trainiert.
