MONTBELIARDE 2020 Welcome to the 2020 edition of Montbeliarde Sires available from Cattle Genie Limited. All the bulls listed are supplied from KI-SAMEN bv however the bulls themselves originate from the JURA mountain region of the AOC Comte and are bred by an independent farmer owned co-operative Eleveurs Libres de Franch- Comte. The bulls are 100% pure in race and stay true to the values required in order to be able to produce the regions famous Comte cheese. Such requirements include no feeding of any silage of any kind due to tainting of the cheese and a stocking density of cows per Hectare to be observed in order to deter artificial nitrogen use. Additionally concentrate feed ( cereals - Soya meals ) are limited to 1800 Kg per cow per year.
These measures as you will appreciate have a bearing on the production records
of cows and sires proofs and it is not possible to make comparisons for production
on an index system with bulls from most of the alternative Sire breeding
programmes. The bulls have been selected on fertility, udder health.
temperament and milking speed which results in excellent longevity. They are
good muscled bulls and not tall & deep bodied but shorter and with increased
chest width and are highly suited to grazing.
We think you will find these Montbeliarde bulls of interest and welcome the
somewhat different blood lines on offer, all bulls displayed are outcross for Great
Britain, they utilise the 8 blood lines founded by Emile Richeme. 3 of these
bloodlines that most other semen suppliers utilise diverged in the late 1970's and
have taken different routes making these bulls quite unique.

from cattle breeding, its founder Emile Richeme created "linear selection" and since his passing

of EPERVIER
Epervier is the son of Lequel, known for his
dairy-typical daughters. The daughters of
Lequel have excellent udder balance and
texture and are well attached. His daughters
are average in terms of size and are
predominately red in colour. The dam of
Epervier is Ignorante, who is a daughter from
Grain D’Or (golden grain).
She reached the ripe age of 17 years old and produced more than 124,000 kg of
milk. On average she produced more than 30 kilo per day and that in the region
where the famous cheese Comté comes from and where hay and not silage is used.
The first pedigree UK daughters are in milk, they have very good udders and teat
quality, good milk production and very correct feet & legs. In addition Epervier is an
outcross bull from, by far, the most well-known breeding line in the Montbéliarde
breed. He comes from a region where breeding is done especially with bulls that are
known for their long life without problems. In addition to depth in the frame,
Epervier can also add milk type. The first calves show an above average meat yield.

These Montbeliarde bulls available from Cattle Genie Limited originate from the Co- Operative of Eleveurs Libres de Franche - Comte. Cattle Genie Limited believe in the values of "linear selection" with regards to maintaining genetic diversity within the breed. The goal is not to unite all of the breed genetically on a universal character, instead independent different character lineages specialising on 1 or 2 dominant characters which will result in following generations of bulls tested from each lineage revealing these characteristics to the highest level and with great regularity. The objective is not to offer breeders " Zero faults" however testing will provide evidence of qualities and defects and be displayed in full. The reasoning behind these couplings at herd level will then through each generation of female relatives bring necessary qualities accumulative by avoiding defaults. This provides cattle breeders a choice in which direction his herd goes and escapes the single model index and fashion of the moment! This preserves maximum variability of genetics , were this nucleus of historical blood lines not promoted equally within the frame work then the so called genetic improvements achieved within whole herds through the use of an index would come at the cost of a number of the blood lines being under utilised to the point of extinction . We have seen this with other breeds and the end result has been to cross with either similar races or Holstein blood. Because of the breeding structure promoting all the blood lines and relying on experienced cattle breeders to manage these families the need for genomic Sire proofs and predicted data has not been embraced, it would add much cost to the programme and this would in turn be passed onto farmers and breeders. The bulls in this catalogue have therefore no genomic proof data, further details on the family trees of the breeding lines are displayed on the following pages.
