March 2021 Issue - Emily Schreiber, Editor

PTA's MISSION is to make every child’s potential a reality by engaging and
empowering families and communities to advocate for all children.

A Message From Lynn Petrofsky, The Region Director

I am so happy that spring is almost here. This is a time of renewal and transition not only in the
season, but in our PTA world as well. Your nominating committees should have been elected and begun
or concluded the work of presenting a slate of officers for the 2021-2022 school year. Most unit elections
should be happening at this time. Check your Bylaws for the exact timing for your unit. *A note for
current presidents “You must fill out the Officers Information through Member Hub for next year’s
officers after your elections have been held (even if the Officers have not changed).
Plan on having your elected officers attend our Officers Training which will be held virtually.
This is a very important, job-specific training and is an integral part of starting your PTA year on the right
foot.
We are also in the season of school budgets and school board elections. Hold a Candidates’
Forum so that your community has the opportunity to hear candidates who are running for the school
board. Nassau Region has moderators & timekeepers available to assist you. See our website for details
in requesting a forum. Remember that, as a 501c3 organization, PTA cannot endorse or oppose
candidates.
Continue your membership enrollment and send the dues payments to the NYS PTA Office
through MemberHub. Visit the membership page on Nassau Region or NYSPTA websites for news
about exciting new membership awards.
The Arts in Education Showcase will be held virtually on April 8th. Performers will be
showcasing their acts and it will be an evening of entertainment for you and your children. We hope your
family can join us. Information can be found at www.nassaupta.org.
You must be a unit in good standing to participate in local and state functions. Please call your
AD if you have any questions about your status.
Our website is currently being revamped so as to bring you all needed information. Visit
frequently to see what is new and share the site address (www.nassaupta.org) with your members.
Don’t forget, to receive the Zoom information for any of our events, you MUST be registered. All
forms can be found on our website and our Facebook page.
We are always looking for new faces on Nassau Region PTA. Please fill out a Nassau Region
recommendation form for yourself or for others listing the qualifications and interests of those being
recommended.
Always remember….We Are Family!!!
Best,
Lynn

NYS PTA’s Webinar on Mental Health
                        by June Innella, Resolutions Chair

On February 18th, NYS PTA hosted a webinar on mental health issues in our
schools.
The training of all staff in our schools is imperative to support the mental health
of our children and youth. As teachers and staff learn the language which can better
support those in need, the relationships between our youth and adults become one of
trust and security.
To learn more about the importance of the mental health of our children and
youth visit the NYS PTA website. The webinar is available there as is important
information on cyberbullying, suicide, and various mental health issues affecting our
youth.
You may also want to visit the National PTA website to gain knowledge of the
National PTA Public Priorities for the 117th Congress. Among these priorities is the
support of every student's mental health and providing and connecting students with
necessary behavioral and mental health resources at school and in their communities.

From the Family Engagement Chair, Alecia Whitaker Pace

We are halfway through a pandemic school year. Crazy, right? Now is
a great time to check in with your families to see how they are doing and
how your unit can best support them.
Please email this digital postcard to your members and/or post it to
your social media platforms. Let them know you care.
I made the graphic purposefully generic so that all Nassau Region
units can implement it, but, when you share it with your unit, make sure to
include the contact information for a point person from your board.
Reach out to your families. We are all going through this together.
2020-2021 Winifred Pratt
           Newsletter Competition
         by Emily Schreiber, Newsletter Chair
            Deadline is March 31, 2021.

Nassau Region PTA invites you to participate in the
  2020-2021 Winifred Pratt Newsletter Competiton.
Winifred Pratt began her PTA® career in 1917 and continued to serve for
over 50 years. She was the Director of the Long Island District PTA from
1929-1932 and distinguished herself for her devotion to PTA and its ideals. This
competiton was established to commemorate her work and to recognize
achievement in promoting communication between school and home.
Being that the Covid19 Pandemic has impacted all of our lives in so many ways, one
must recognize the important role communication between the homes and schools — the
administrators, teachers, parents, and, of course the students — must have taken on.

I hope that your PTA newsletters fulfilled a need and carried home your important
messages. Also, since your newsletters are so important, I also hope that you’ve submitted
your entries into our Nassau Region PTA’s Winifred Pratt Newsletter Competition.

I’m so looking forward to seeing your creative approach to the task of spreading your
PTA/PTSA unit’s word.

The time before the deadline — March 31st — is running low, but it’s not over yet!
