EDITOR’s Letter
 Dear Shapians,
Summer spare time sometimes brings strange results; one day, “thinking
about thinking” I found the metacognition concept (byJ. H. Flavell). Basically,
it says that when you go round in circles with thesame concerns, or ideas, or
anything that you are worried about, you findyourself in a position where
you are not achieving anything as you are comingback to the same point or
 problem every time.
It is possible that you have encountereddifficulties to stop thinking about a
specific subject for hours or dayswithout finding any solution to it. In this
category you could includeall kind of thoughts or strange things that you
keep on doing like an automatism, not being conscious of what we are doing.
When that happens we could developsome behavioural “tricks” to refrain
 from taking place.
Some day-to-day examples of metacognition could beto realize that you have
difficulty remembering people’s names in socialsituations, to remind yourself
that you should try to remember the name of aperson you just met, or to
recognize that you know the answer to a question butsimply cannot recall it
 at the moment.
Once you identify this, then the process to avoidthat kind of situation becomes
easier to achieve. Change your mind-set, focuson something different, target
a solution. It would help you to improve yourquality of life, guaranteed!

 The Turkish Farewell Dinner
By OF-3 (Maj) Haldun ŞİFA, TUR AF

T
he Turkish Community organized a farewell
dinner on 18 June 2021 for those ending their tours
here in SHAPE. Sharing the same objectives and
working together bond people, which in return make it
difficult to say goodbye. It was both joy and sorrow felt
together throughout the event as the time had come
for setting sails to new horizons while the rest of the
community bidding them farewell.
Following the photoshoot the event commenced
and Turkish NMR MGen. Rasim YALDIZ delivered a
speech in which he thanked the outgoing personnel
for their willingness to undertake the hard work
for extended periods, also acknowledging their
significant contributions and reiterating that they have
consistently conducted themselves as consummate
professionals. Subsequently, he commended their
families for their never-ending support and displaying
great examples of the modern Turkish families,
followed by the dissemination of the farewell gifts.
Surviving the COVID pandemic without any incidents in
2020-2021, the Turkish Community in SHAPE enjoyed their
time during the event after a long-lasting restriction
period. While still abiding by the current regulations,
the community compensated for the numerous days
spent away from each other due to the pandemic.
The event concluded with a final photoshoot in
commemoration of the farewell, once again reminding that
the time flies by and all that matters is how you spend it.

the uniqueness of the chosen date, as well as the
evolution of the Portuguese perspective on their
own (political, social, cultural…) identity over time.
Celebrated on June 10, the “Day of Portugal, Camões

of the countries, does not refer to a specific historical
(either political or military) event related to the country’s
independence, but to one of the greatest Portuguese
cultural figures of all time: the poet Luís Vaz de Camões.
