                                     President’s Message
Welcome to the Northern Virginia Business and Professional Women’s
Club 2021-2022 new club year! Do I seem excited? Well, actually I am
because I have come to the conclusion that we can choose what we are
happy, sad, disappointed, upset, frustrated, angry and discontent about
in our lives. Today, my choice is to be overjoyed about the relationships
I’ve developed over the past 4 years with some of the most beautiful,
kind and professional women who have positively impacted my life!
Thank You Sisters for contributing to my continued growth as a
Daughter of the King, a wife, mother, grandmother and leader to those
who have allowed me to lead.
Our theme for the 2021-2022 club year is “ Moving Forward With a
Purpose” – Bold, Powerful, and Resilient! During our President’s
President Janet Ford Retreat, we were asked what the statement meant to us. Several
responses such as confident, action, determination and momentum were given and yes, leadership
was among the list. But my question is, “what does the theme mean to you and what bold and
powerful actions are you willing to take to fulfill your purpose?” During this club year, there will
be several opportunities to be bold, to step outside of your comfort zone and take actions that may
stretch you a little. There’s a quote I often use by John Maxwell that states, “Change is inevitable,
growth is optional”. We are making positive changes in our NOVABPW Club this year and
excitement is in the air! However, the decision to embrace and grow with the change is an
individual choice. So, what’s coming? What can you jump right in and lend a hand with? Where’s
your opportunity to use a skillset or grow in a specific area? Here’s a sneak preview, but there’s
more.

club year! Let’s impact our community, the lives of our young people and the lives of women who
need our support or want to make a difference themselves.

The Convention opened with Presentation of Colors by the United States
Marine Corp followed by a powerful rendition of the Negro National
Anthem by Grace Baptist Cathedral including a video montage with key
historic events significant to African Americans.
The Honorable Eleanor Holmes Norton, U.S Congress; Bishop Leah D.
Daughtery, CEO of 2016, and 2008 Democratic National Convention
Committees; Mayor Lovely Warren, Rochester, New York, and Pia
Scott, Senior Advisor--General Service Administration were political
figures attending and who also addressed the convention attendees.

National Presidents: "Whose Shoulders Do I Stand On?" and eloquently
honored and recognized these powerful leaders who were so important
in the history of the organization. Madam National President also
provided a tour of the headquarters, sharing insights about the artifacts and unique features of the

Grosvenor; Veena Akama-Makia. However, Thomas Warfield, nephew of Leontyne Price and Charles
Warfield offered very interesting insights about his famous Aunt and Uncle. The Saturday evening Jazz

outstanding musical event. Ms. Henry, a very talented jazz soloist, also provided interesting infor-
mation about PNP Frankie Gillette.

Jasmine Camacho-Quinn won the gold medal in the women's 100m hurdles
running for Puerto Rico, one race after she set the Olympic record for the event
in the semifinals. Her time of 12.37 in the finals was fast enough to put her on top
of the podium. That was just slightly behind her semifinals time of 12.26, which
smashed the previous record time set by Australia's Sally Pearson in 2012. She
set the record of 12.35 when she won gold at the London Olympics nearly a
                  decade ago.
Her parents are James Quinn, an African American man and Maria Milagros
Camacho, a Puerto Rican woman. Both competed in athletics at Baptist College
(now Charleston Southern University) in South Carolina. Her father competed
in hurdles and her mother as a sprint runner and long jumper. Camacho-Quinn's
mother, María Milagros Camacho, is from Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico which made
Camacho-Quinn eligible to represent Puerto Rico in the Olympics. National
Football League (NFL) Chicago Bears’ player Robert Quinn is her brother.
Born and raised in South Carolina, later in life, Camacho-
Quinn decided she wanted to know more about her mother's
side of the family, who live in Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico. She
identifies as a Puerto Rican. In July 2021, she tweeted about
her mother, "You see my mommy? The PUERTO RICAN
woman that birthed me?" and stated "I am Puerto Rican" in a
video posted by the Puerto Rican Olympic Committee. That
Camacho-Quinn is the first Afro-Puerto Rican to win a gold
medal was celebrated by social anthropologist, Bárbara
                                      Abadía-Rexach, who stated "Camacho-Quinn’s victory is a
pioneering example for black girls on the island that shows
them they can achieve whatever they set their minds to,
despite the systemic barriers they will encounter due to
Jasmine Camacho-Quinn their gender, race and ethnicity.”
