       CRIME VICTIMS’ RIGHTS
       WEEK in PA
       April 18 – 24, 2021

n April I introduced a resolution to recognize the

I week of April 18th through the 24th as Crime
          Victims’ Rights Week.
Survivors of crime did not choose to become victims.
I spoke on the floor of the Senate to remind Crime
Victims that we are here to protect their rights. To ensure that they are included, and their rights are
      respected here in Pennsylvania.
Crime victims are no less deserving of justice, rights, resources, restoration, and rehabilitation than
      those who victimized them.
To the public, if you or someone you know has been a victim of a crime; you have rights granted to you
      by the Commonwealth.
I urge you to visit the Pennsylvania Office of the Victim Advocate’s website, ova.pa.gov. There you can
find many helpful resources, including notification registration for updates in an offender’s status, victim
services locations nearest you, and the full list of Crime Victims’ Rights.
In recognizing the week of April 18th through the 24th as Crime Victims’ Rights Week, we’re showing all
victims of crime, no matter who you are, that your rights should be protected and preserved. ■

Drawing of Henry Whitaker’s Son’s Mill

     HISTORICAL LANDMARK
supported the nomination of the Henry Whitaker’s Sons’

I Mill listing in the National Registry of Historic Places. It
was founded in 1890 by Joseph G. (1865-1940) and
William D. Whitaker (1869-1966), sons of Henry Whitaker,
     Sr., (1826-1907)
Located at Westmoreland and Emerald Streets, the mill
was a major producer and supplier of cotton yarns to
Philadelphia’s vast carpet industry during the late
nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It is characteristic
of the Philadelphia textile industry’s tendency toward highly
specialized operations that each focused on one discrete
component in the manufacturing process. The Period of
Significance begins in 1890, when the mill was completed, &
ends in 1925, after the Whitakers built a new mill. ■

              TICK season, safety TIPS
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health (DOH), there
were more than 9,000 confirmed and probable cases of Lyme disease in
Pennsylvania. Lyme disease can lead to severe symptoms that affect the
heart, nervous system and joints over time if it is not treated.

 PREVENTION TIPS
 from PA Lyme Resource Network:
     IN THE YARD
Raking leaves, removing pools of standing water, cutting grass regularly, trimming edges around
     fences, buildings, and sidewalks.

     CONDUCT TICK CHECKS
Remove clothing in garage or shed and shower when coming indoors. Put clothes in dryer for 1
hour at high heat. Check children, pets and self. Ask vet for repellents to repel/kill ticks on your pet.

     SELF-PROTECTION
Wear light-colored clothing, slacks tucked into socks, and use repellents (Ultrathon, BioUD,
Natrapel, Bug Guard Plus, Cutter Backwoods) and some natural repellents (neem, eucalyptus,
lemongrass, camphor, cedar oil) may be beneficial. Clothing treated with Permethrin is effective.
Spraying your shoes and socks provides high reduction in tick attachments.
