SCIENCE OLYMPIAD PRESENTATION 2021-2022
What is Science Olympiad?
v Team based STEM enrichment program (NOT
  science tutoring)

v 23 challenging events in most branches of science
  (not just fun)

v Team centered (individual glory is secondary)

v Teams of 15 students move to next level together, or
  they don’t.

v Not a trivia competition. Students must apply their
 knowledge.

v Great deal of dedication from all parties
SCIENCE OLYMPIAD PRESENTATION 2021-2022
Science Olympiad Highlights
v RCSA HAS A LONG HISTORY OF SUCCESS IN
  SCIENCE OLYMPIAD
v COMPETED IN STATE TOURNAMENTS OVER 10
YEARS IN A ROW AND QUALIFIED FOR THE
  NATIONAL TOURNAMENT TWICE
v Last year’s highlights:
§ MS Team Rockets placed 2nd and Team Rocketeers
placed 7th at the Regional Tournament.
§ HS Team placed 2nd at the Regional Tournament.
§ RCSA Rockets placed 5th at the State Competition.
§ RCSA is the first school in Duval County to
represent the State of Florida at the National
Tournament in Fort Collins, Colorado in 2018.
2018 NATIONAL SCIENCE OLYMPIAD TOURNAMENT-
         COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY
2019 NATIONAL SCIENCE OLYMPIAD TOURNAMENT-
            CORNELL UNIVERSITY
MS 3rd Place RCSA Rockets placed 5th HS 3rd Place
               in the Florida State Tournament-2021

MS 1st Place
2021-2022 Goal
To place first or second in the State Science
Olympiad Tournament in order to qualify for the

  National Science Olympiad
         Tournament
to be held on May 14, 2022
at the California Institute of Technology

                   (Caltech)
Important Dates
q MS Invitational at Rickards: November 6, 2021(Virtual)
q HS Invitational at Rickards: November 7, 2021(Virtual)
q More invitational tournaments coming soon…
q Regional: North Regional at UF-February 5, 2022 (in-person)

q State : Florida State at UF-March 26, 2022 (Virtual)
q National : May 14, 2022-Caltech (Virtual)

Dates in Red are required for students
who want to make the state team
Competition Team Size

vMultiple teams can qualify for the State Tournament.
vUp to 15 students per team will compete in the 23
 events
vMiddle School Team: 6th through 9th graders,
 maximum of five 9th graders.
vHigh School Team: 10th through 12th graders, max.
 seven senior students.

v Not everyone will participate at state
  or national level!
Competition Teams will be
          chosen by looking at:
1. Results from practice tests, invitationals, and regional
     tournament
2. Competition schedule conflicts
3. Attendance at weekly event meetings (clubs) and
     Saturday studies
4. Attitude, spirit, leadership
5. Behavior

6. Team success takes priority over individual
     success
Before you commit:
q We recommend that Science Olympiad students not participate
  in other academic teams.

q If you choose to participate in more than one Academic Team
(Robotics, Math Olympiad), expect conflicts in competition
  dates.

q We do not recommend doing Science AND Math Olympiad

q Students must select a minimum of 3 academic (i.e., not building)
  events to study.

q Competitive Olympians should expect to spend 10 or more hours
per week working on their events, including weekly event
meetings, Saturday studies and independent study time

q Science Olympiad is a Team competition. No event winners move
on to the next level of competition unless the whole team
  qualifies
Keep in mind:
CRAMMING IS NOT AN EFFECTIVE STRATEGY
FOR SCIENCE OLYMPIAD!
v In order to be selected to compete in an
event, you must demonstrate some level of
    mastery.
v Just attending Science Olympiad classes is
not enough to ensure a competition slot.
v The most successful students are those who:
Ø Are not over-committed with other activities
Ø Have the time and motivation to study on
     their own.
What Can I Do for Our
         Team as a Parent?

Science Olympiad is a team effort. Success is much
more difficult without your help!!
