Spring 2018

Hello Vet Med!
It’s hard to believe our year is coming to a close! We wish the best of luck to the fourth years,
who are facing the joyous and scary prospect of graduation and preparing to jump head on into
the real world! The third years have started their long journey into clinics, second years are
finishing up a long year of pathology and the first years just want to throw away their anatomy
scrubs and leave the smell of the lab behind. Hang on for the last few weeks everyone – summer
and graduation will be here before you know it! Good luck to all those with finals left to go!

                                        Upcoming Events

Illinois Student Chapter of the American
                 Veterinary Medical Association
                           (ISCAVMA)

Do you still find yourself wondering: “What is ISCAVMA?” Ask no more!
Here is a brief summary:

ISCAVMA is our school’s student chapter of the AVMA. Each veterinary school has their own student
chapter that functions under the Student AVMA (SAVMA), which consists of an Executive Board and a House
of Delegates (HOD) composed of two representatives from each member chapter (including our own). The
formation of a national organization of veterinary students has enabled what were once isolated student chapters
to function effectively as a single unit on the national scene.

The Student AVMA coordinates student chapter functions, promotes the exchange of ideas and information
among students, and represents its members in matters that concern them, both as students and as future
veterinarians.

Spring 2018 - University of Illinois
Vet Med United is a national movement started by veterinary students impacted by the
rising numbers of suicide and mental health stigmas within our profession. We
decided to come together in solidarity to mourn the loss as well as promote ways to
provide support and wellness initiatives. Students with passions can impact the future
of the profession. Every April, the national SAVMA Wellness Committee encourages
our SAVMA chapters to participate in a day recognizing a Vet Med United against
mental health stigmas and stand in solidarity for those we have lost in hopes that our
future profession can see a time with #notonemorevet.

This year, our Illinois SAVMA Wellness Committee held three events to help us stand in
solidarity and promote unity and support in our VetMed community.
We had a fantastic turn out for all of the events held!
Give A Ribbon, Take a Ribbon
Lunch Lecture with our own Devon Hague, DVM, DACVIM
                                     Evening Unity Activity
We hope that we can continue this movement to benefit the future of our profession and
form a community to support one another and invite you to join us next year on April 4th!
