WELCOME
Spring, glorious spring! The season embodies ideas
of rebirth, rejuvenation, renewal, resurrection and
regrowth. As the days get longer and activity levels
increase I hope that you discover that spring is the
perfect time to renew or refresh a call to explore
artistic creativity. Finding inspiration to stir the
imagination can be challenging; if you are looking
for a way to kick start your creative energies, you
have come to the right place. The Burnaby Art
Gallery has exhibitions and programs for all ages and
all levels of expertise.
In the months ahead we have a wide variety of
exhibitions taking place at the gallery including large-
scale photography, two showcases of artwork created
by Burnaby elementary and secondary students and
an exhibition featuring remarkable artwork selected
from the hundreds of pieces that have been added
to the City of Burnaby Permanent Art Collection over
the past three years. If you can’t make it to the gallery,
perhaps you can stop by the Bob Prittie Library in
Metrotown or the McGill Library in North Burnaby to
view our offsite exhibitions.
There are curator talks and tours, family programs,
classes for children and our popular adult programs
which include opportunities to create and socialize.
BAG summer programs offer short workshops
and full day classes to suit the needs of parents
and artists alike. We will be taking art into the
community at special events throughout Burnaby;
look for us at the Burnaby Festival of Learning,
Canada Day at Swangard and the Burnaby Blues and
Roots Festival!
We look forward to seeing you soon,
Ellen van Eijnsbergen

COHEN
Lynne Cohen is best known for her photographs of
These Walls institutional interior spaces. Generally inaccessible to the
public, these spaces have included medical laboratories,
March 15-April 21 private offices, factories, shooting ranges and military
installations. Part of the 2019 Capture Photography Festival
Selected Exhibition Program, this is the first time in several
decades that Cohen’s work has been exhibited on the west
coast. Including loans from the Canada Council Art Bank;
Olga Korper Gallery, Toronto; and the estate of Lynne Cohen,
this exhibition brings together work from the 1970s through to
the early 2000s.
Lynne Cohen (b. Racine, Wisconsin, 1944) lived and worked
in Canada from 1973 until her death in 2014. Cohen studied
at the University of Wisconsin, the Slade School of Art,
University of London, and Eastern Michigan University. She
was a recipient of numerous awards of merit, including
the Governor General’s Award in Visual Arts and Media
Arts in 2005. Cohen’s work is represented in over 50 public
collections, including the National Gallery of Canada, the

ARTS ALIVE 2019 Arts Alive 2019: Math & Art | Lower Gallery
Gallery Tour | May 5, 1-3pm
& TRANSITIONS
Arts Alive is an annual showcase of collaborative student
May 3-June 9 works held in collaboration with the Burnaby School
District. This year’s 37th edition presents a selection of
artworks from elementary schools across the city. Math &
Art is this year’s theme to act as inspiration for students.
Transitions | Upper Gallery
Featured in the Upper Gallery is artwork created by senior
secondary school students in the Burnaby Art Gallery’s
Artist Apprenticeship Program. This program mentors
students interested in pursuing a career in the fine arts
and invites them to develop and curate an exhibition of
their own works. In this year’s program, participants were
asked to consider a theme and to select an inspiration
piece from the gallery’s Permanent Art Collection. This
exhibition features both their selected work from the
collection and their creative responses.

5WOMEN’S Opening Reception | June 20, 7-9pm
Curator’s Tour | June 23, 2pm
WORK
This exhibition focuses on the Burnaby Art Gallery’s
New Acquisitions direction, since 2013, to significantly enhance its
2019 collection of works created by women artists. Six
years ago, it was discovered that within the permanent
June 21-August 25 collection of more than 5000 works of art, only 22% of
works were created by women artists. Although a statistic
such as this is common amongst collecting institutions, it
was nevertheless identified as troubling. Through targeted
collections practices, the gallery has worked steadily to
increase its holdings, so that the collection now comprises
25% of works created by women.
This exhibition highlights historical and contemporary works
recently acquired through both gift and purchase, with works
by Diyan Achjadi, Shuvinai Ashoona, Mary Cassatt, Kate
Craig, Leonor Fini, Carole Itter, Gabrielle L’Hirondelle Hill,
Agnes Martin, Tania Willard, and many others.

8RECENT ACQUISITION
This recent acquisition was a gift of the artist in 2017.
Gary Lee-Nova’s 2007 work Travel Diary I explores
relations between two and three-dimensional forms, and
between symbolic and iconic signs. Using digital collage
techniques, Lee-Nova creates the detailed form of a
ziggurat by transposing two easily-recognizable street
maps: Paris and London.
Gary Lee-Nova (b.1943, Toronto, ON) studied at the
Vancouver School of Art and at Coventry College,
England. Lee-Nova was an important figure in the West
Coast Scene of the late 1960s and early 1970s. He was
a co-founder of Image Bank (with Michael Morris and
Vincent Trasov) and active in the Sound Gallery (circa
1965) and Intermedia (1967-1972). Lee-Nova continues
to be active as an artist, working on single projects
that often take years to execute. In 2018 he was named
Professor Emeritus of the Emily Carr University of
Art and Design. This work, along with many other
fascinating works by Gary Lee-Nova, will be included in
a retrospective exhibition at the Burnaby Art Gallery in
Summer 2020.

10PROGRAMS
Burnaby Art Gallery is a unique and inspiring place
to learn about art. Our programs focus on artwork in
our current exhibitions or from the City of Burnaby
Permanent Art Collection, both at the gallery and
at offsite exhibitions in local public libraries. Our
emphasis on printmaking is offset by classes in other
media, and our supportive, experienced instructors
work hard to balance skill development with personal
expression and creative thinking.
