                               is in Serengeti district. They provide a
                               refuge for those escaping FGM, an all too
                               common practice in Mara, where around
                               40% of girls are cut. In certain tribes, the
                               practice is believed to increase a girl’s
                               value for marriage.

                               Samwelly says there was no place for
                               girls to go to be protected against FGM.

                               running away when she was 13 and
