The Word of Christ Bestows Peace on His Creation through His Forgiveness of Sins
In his anguish and affliction, Job must be reminded that, as a finite creature, he is in no position to
question the Maker of the heavens and the earth. Job’s “words without knowledge” are unable to
penetrate the wisdom of the Lord (Job 38:1–2). For the Lord has “prescribed limits” and “set bars and
doors,” so that “here shall your proud waves be stayed” (Job 38:9–11). That’s how He humbles us unto
repentance. But also by His powerful Word, He calms the “great windstorm” and the waves “breaking
into the boat.” He does not permit the chaos of this fallen world to overwhelm us or bring us to
despair. By the Word of His Gospel, He speaks “Peace!” to us, which bestows the “great calm” of His
new creation (Mark 4:37–39). Therefore, do not be afraid, and do not receive this grace of God in
vain. “Now is the favorable time,” and “now is the day of salvation” (2 Cor. 6:1–2).
The Fourth Sunday after Pentecost Father's Day Observance "Being a Real Man: A Father's Message"
In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Psalm 124 (Our Help is in the Name of the LORD)
If it had not been the LORD who was on our side—let Israel now say—
if it had not been the LORD who was on our side
when people rose up against us,
then they would have swallowed us up alive,
      when their anger was kindled against us;
then the flood would have swept us away,
      the torrent would have gone over us;
then over us would have gone the raging waters.
Blessèd be the LORD, who has not given us as prey to their teeth!
We have escaped like a bird from the snare of the fowlers;
the snare is broken, and we have escaped!
Our help is in the name of the LORD,
   who made heaven and earth.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen
Collect
The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray.
Almighty God, the powers of the universe are subject to You. Help us to find peace in Your
Lordship, through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the
Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
Hymn 709,1-4 The King of Love My Shepherd Is
1 The King of love my shepherd is, 3 Perverse and foolish oft I strayed,
Whose goodness faileth never; But yet in love He sought me
I nothing lack if I am His And on His shoulder gently laid
And He is mine forever. And home rejoicing brought me.
2 Where streams of living water flow, 4 In death’s dark vale I fear no ill
My ransomed soul He leadeth With Thee, dear Lord, beside me,
And, where the verdant pastures grow, Thy rod and staff my comfort still,
With food celestial feedeth. Thy cross before to guide me.

Holy Gospel Mark 4:35–41
35On that day, when evening had come, [Jesus] said to them, “Let us go across to the

other side.” 36And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was.
And other boats were with him. 37And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were
breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38But he was in the stern,
asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that
we are perishing?” 39And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be
still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40He said to them, “Why are you
so afraid? Have you still no faith?” 41And they were filled with great fear and said to one
another, “Who then is this, that even wind and sea obey him?”
P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C Praise be to Thee, O Christ.

Stewardship Minute

Mark 4:40 – “He said to them, ‘Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?’ ” Faith means trust.
If we trust the Lord, what do we have to be afraid of? Isn’t it fear that holds us back in our stewardship?
Isn’t it fear that stops us from following the Lord’s Word to give generously toward His work in the
Church? Well then, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” The Lord has proved His
trustworthiness by His cross. You can trust Him.

Sermon:
“Being a Real Man while Playing with Wind and Water: A Father’s Day Message”
                                                                              (Mark 4:35-41)
Today is Father’s Day. What makes a guy a real man? I’ll let you come up with your own
description of a real man. Today, as I look at the Gospel, I note that real men get into boats
and play with wind and water. And while we’re talking about men because it’s Father’s Day,
probably what I say has application to any Christian.
The first description of men in Christ is that they have a plan of escape. Now many wives do
tell me their husbands are great escape artists. But I’m talking about danger and uncertainty
in life: real men come up with a plan of escape.
Our text in verse 36 has Jesus and His disciples in a boat escaping the needs of the crowds
and the voices of opposition. This boat first appears in chapter 3 verse 9 where Jesus
instructs His disciples to secure a boat. The crowd is pressing on Jesus. They could crush
Him. It’s always good to have a plan of escape.
Chapter 4 verse 1 has Jesus teaching from that boat. Could Jesus want to feel more secure
from the pressing of the crowd? Our text has Jesus and His disciples secure in this boat
protected from the crowds. The escape plan is in action. Real men listen to Jesus. Real men
do as Jesus says. Real men have a plan of escape to help them maneuver the difficulties and
dangers of life and to protect the ones they love.
But sometimes sudden storms arise that even AccuWeather on your phone gets wrong. And
there you are in a modest boat on a great lake buffeted by wind and wave without a plan of
escape. Real men face times where they have no plan of escape. These are times in our lives
that test our faith. Is your faith like Jesus? Is your faith in Jesus?
Isaiah writes “You [LORD] keep the [righteous person] in perfect peace whose mind is stayed
on You, because [one] trusts in You. Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD GOD is an
everlasting rock” (Is. 26:3-4). The Psalmists prays: “In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for
You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety” (Psalm 4:8). And thus, in midst of wind and wave
with no apparent plan of escape we find Jesus in deep, sweet sleep all in His heavenly Father’s
care.
What does a real man in Christ do when one has done all one can but it is not enough to
escape the wind and wave of life? You arouse Jesus! And so we come to our third point
regarding real men: real men wake Jesus from His sleep. Now guys may not always have the
purest motive. And at times the way men wake Jesus up seems so inappropriate, revealing
they simply get something wrong. Still, a real person in Christ knows to go to Jesus and wake
Him from His sleep.
People who have a faith like Jesus weather a storm in perfect peace with complete confidence
God the LORD is the eternal rock. We do what we can; the rest is up to God. But what do
other people think of us when we are in perfect peace? The disciples look at Jesus sleeping
and think: He doesn’t care that we are all about to drown!
The first thing that should come out of a person of faith like Jesus in Jesus should be: “Help!”
The disciples put that aside. They accuse Jesus of not caring! They accuse Jesus of having no
urgency in such an emergency while the wind and wave ravage their boat! They are annoyed
that Jesus is at peace, sweetly sleeping, trusting them to take care of the ship while they’ve
tried everything and don’t know what to do. Often the Christian’s faith isn’t like Jesus nor
secure in Jesus yet the real Christian knows to go to Jesus and trust He will hear and act no
matter how afraid one is.
Point number four: real men accept Jesus’ rebuke and muzzle. Hey, we’re sinners. Jesus is
going to rebuke and muzzle sin. And neither the rebuke nor the muzzle is going to feel all
that great. In fact, Jesus’ rebuke and muzzle makes us feel really tiny and helpless and like
that we don’t have any worth. Yet real men take Jesus’ rebuke and muzzle.
Wimps walk away. Wimps plot how to get even, how to become the Master, how to destroy
life. That’s what Saddam Hussein did. That’s what Adolph Hitler did. They were wimps,
certainly demonic terrors, but at the same wimps and cowards. It takes courage and trust to
receive Jesus’ rebuke and muzzle and still stick it out with Him trusting He is the Way, the
Truth, and the Life.
First Jesus rebukes the wind: “Shut up! Be quiet!” First Jesus muzzles the sea: “Become tame,
quiet, and settled!”
In all human history, only the insane and the most foolish attempt to rebuke the wind and
muzzle the wave. Ancient peoples understood that only the true God is power over nature;
humans attempting power over nature are idiots.
Antiochus Epiphanes the IV was one such ruler. He compared himself to Alexander the Great
able to conquer all. He slaughtered thousands of Jerusalemites, repressed Hebrew religion,
compelled swine sacrifices on God’s holy altar, and profaned Jerusalem’s temple by placing
a statue of Zeus in the Holy of Holies. The Maccabean revolt happens in response to him. He
claimed he was god able to rebuke wind and muzzle the sea. He tried it. He failed miserably,
was mocked, and everyone knew he wasn’t God. You know the saying: ”The bigger they are,
the harder they fall.”
Jesus arises from His sleep. He rebukes the wind. He muzzles the sea. And the wind ceases
and the sea becomes calm. Jesus does what only God almighty can do. Brothers and Sisters
in Jesus, real Christians understand: this Jesus is no mere human. He is creator God, the
Almighty, ruler over wind and wave so that even wind and wave must obey His command.
Brothers in Sisters in Christ, it’s ok to call Saddam Hussein a bully and an idiot. It’s ok to call
Adolph Hitler a bully and idiot, though I would never call a bully an idiot to his or her face.
But Jesus is no idiot. Nor is He a bully. He really commands wind and wave and everything
else in nature. He alone is God.
When the wind blows and the wave crashes the foundations of your life, remember, Jesus,
the LORD Almighty, is with you. He, the Almighty God, who humbles Himself to become like
us, human, except without sin, so that we can hear Him and touch Him and know Him and so
that He can give His life as our ransom and rise to be our eternal help from sin, death, devil,
and even from ourselves.
No matter how annoyed one gets with Jesus, no matter how much Jesus rebukes you, no
matter how afraid a disciple becomes of Him who commands wind and wave, real Christians
hear the voice of the Master and follow Him wherever He leads. Real men answer Jesus’ call
to repentance and turn toward God. Real men have Jesus’ blood cover their sin. Real men
set their heart and life on the works Jesus has prepared for them.
Guys, are you a man in Christ Jesus? Amen.
Hymn 729 I Am Trusting Thee, Lord Jesus
729 I Am Trusting Thee, Lord Jesus
1   I am trusting Thee, Lord Jesus,                4      I am trusting Thee to guide me;
Trusting only Thee; Thou alone shalt lead,
Trusting Thee for full salvation, Ev’ry day and hour supplying
Great and free. All my need.
2   I am trusting Thee for pardon;                 5      I am trusting Thee for power;
At Thy feet I bow, Thine can never fail.
For Thy grace and tender mercy Words which Thou Thyself shalt give
       Trusting now. me
3 I am trusting Thee for cleansing Must prevail.
       In the crimson flood;                       6      I am trusting Thee, Lord Jesus;
Trusting Thee to make me holy Never let me fall.
By Thy blood. I am trusting Thee forever
                                                             And for all.

Prayer of the Church
We thank You, Lord, for Your steadfast love and Your wondrous works to the children of
men. You hold power over wind and wave, sin and death.
Deliver us from every trouble and distress, and bring us at last to our eternal haven.
God of our salvation, You have ushered in the favorable time and day of salvation through
the incarnation of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Support all Your ministers, and remove all obstacles
from hearing and believing the Word they preach.
Let Your grace be proclaimed through every hardship, struggle and suffering.
And as we remember the people of faith who have gone before us, help us to consider
ourselves rich and alive despite any opposition,
for since we have Christ, we possess everything.
Heavenly Father, open wide the hearts of Christians to one another, especially within the
home and between neighbors.
Let love be genuine, speech truthful and patience constant.
Let us commend ourselves in everything as those known by God’s love and, therefore,
unashamed to serve one another.
We give You thanks for godly examples given by godly fathers. Help us hold godly
fathers in high esteem and blessed memory.
Lord of all knowledge, You alone with the Son and the Holy Spirit laid the earth’s foundations
and set the limits and order of our universe. Bless all noble sciences that plumb the depths
of Your creation.
Give students, professors and researchers joy in their discoveries and humility before
Your majesty, that at all times You may be acknowledged as the true God and Judge.
Almighty God, You rule this world by Your power. Give to our civil servants respect and
recognition of Your creation and its nature.
When they use the authority given them from above, let it be in accord with Your good
design for our world and not the corruption of sin, which they are to rebuke for the
good of their citizens.
Gracious Father, You see that we are perishing, yet You bid us to set our fears aside and trust
in You for the sake of Christ, by whose blood we have received peace for our troubled
consciences. Do not reject our prayers for their faithlessness, but teach us to trust in You
fully. Give Your protection and peace to those in need [especially _______________]. Lord, in Your
mercy, hear our prayer.

Mission & Outreach Minute

Mark 2:23-28 (3:1-6): Jesus’ message to the Pharisees about the Sabbath turns their
understanding upside down. The Sabbath was made for us! God ordained and established the
Sabbath for the restoration and renewal of His people. As the Lord restores and renews us
through our time gathered in His house, we are then equipped to bring this message to a world
that is desperately in need of the restoration Christ provides.

Today our nation remembers and honors our fathers.
Genesis 4 & 5 tells the tale of two kinds of fathers. Men in the image of Cain are
known as great builders of cities, inventors, raising the art of music and warfare to
ever greater heights. Men in the image of Seth lack such recognition. Instead, they
excelled in knowing God. That translates into companionship and love of wife, rearing children in the
Lord and in good citizenship, and care for the elderly and frail. Paul writes “husbands, love your
wives, as Christ loved the church” (Eph. 5:25). Paul writes “Fathers, do not provoke your children to
anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” (Eph. 6:5)

As long as the pandemic infections continue its downward spiral, this will be a mask optional service.
We still ask for physical distance between family groups. Coffee, water, and donuts will be served
after worship to encourage talk and care among us. Treats encourage the conversation that helps us
learn how to pray for one another?
While currently Michigan’s covid mandate will have expired by then, please note we will tighten our
rules & expectations should pandemic infections begin increasing significantly. Please, DO NOT offer
a HANDSHAKE or HUG unless both parties socially need it. Don’t assume another wants to be
touched. Don’t impose your need to shake hands or hug others on others. And don’t put another
person on the spot by asking them. Being cautious while being friendly & interested in the lives of
others is still the best way of showing care in these times.
